Excerpt from the documentary film "Die Unbeugsamen": part of The Mouth 12
This excerpt is part of the contribution "Shifting social norms as a driving force for linguistic change: Struggles about language and gender in the German Bundestag" (The Mouth 12), which discusses language, gender and discrimination in the German Bundestag. The documentary film Die Unbeugsamen (‘The Unbending’) by Torsten Körner recounts the history of women in the so-called Bonner Republik (‘Bonn Republic’, 1949-1990) and vividly shows how strong the everyday discrimination against gays still was at that time, which can be seen in the short excerpt presented here
Dialogisches Lesen mit Bilderbuch-Apps. Rekonstruktion kindlicher narrativer Verstehensprozesse
Abstract (english): Dialogic reading with picture book apps − exploring children\u27s narrative comprehension
Digital picture books are a growing component of early reading socialization. Studies indicate that children\u27s comprehension of digital stories depends on certain features of the medium. We explore children\u27s narrative comprehension in dialogical reading situations based on a picture book app with high narrative learning potential (Paul and his friends). We present results from a teaching project in which students conducted dialogic reading sessions with children aged 4-6 years in German kindergartens (N=16) followed by asking impulse questions about story comprehension. Interactions were videographed, transcribed and analyzed in terms of children\u27s narrative comprehension. Results show that children engage with the content of the story. However, the degree of engagement appears to depend on the story\u27s narrative scheme. Results are discussed with regard to the features of the medium, children\u27s narrative development and future research questions
Teachers\u27 Views about the Relevance of Mathematical Learning Prerequisites for Studies in STEM and Beyond
Mathematics is fundamental to many fields of study, both within and outside STEM. However, many students are not aware of this fact: They often start their studies with wrong or insufficient perceptions about the mathematical requirements for their studies. First-year students\u27 perceptions of the mathematical requirements of different subjects are formed before they start their studies, and teaching and teachers have a significant influence on them. The aim of this article is therefore to examine teachers\u27 perceptions of general and subject-specific mathematical requirements in selected examples of subjects
The Invisible Lives of Indian Lesbians: An Overview of Literature
This study builds on the growing body of research on queer studies in South Asia, with a particular focus on India, by examining the existing literature available on the lesbian experience. Current studies on queer sexuality predominantly focus on male homosexuality and lesbian discourse has often found itself on the periphery of gender studies and queer studies in the South Asian context which points towards an apparent gender divide, heteronormative patriarchal structures, and lesbian erasure. South Asian lesbians endure numerous and intersecting forms of oppression, including those based on race, caste, class, gender, sexuality, socio-economic background, etc. The invisibility and marginalization of lesbians within the nationalist, patriarchal, and religious contexts is multidimensional, and there is no space for any kind of sexuality that is based on women’s desire for other women, which is further proven through the limited representation lesbians get in literary writings and popular culture like film and television. By drawing on a theoretical review of the current literature available, this research develops an understanding of and provides an overview of the marginalization and invisibility experienced by lesbians in India. By exploring its historical, social, and cultural background, the study interrogates why such hegemonic structures exist even now. Through this analysis, the study aims to ask questions and initiate conversations on the violence of heteronormativity on South Asian lesbians – how they resist institutions that negate their sexuality, and what propels them to move from a place of marginalization and invisibility towards acceptance and healing in order to build viable non-heterosexual life possibilities and a queer tomorrow
Reading and Cognitive Correlates Underlying Inferencing Among Adolescent Readers
Little is known about how components of working memory (i.e., passive resonance of information in working memory, limited capacity working memory, and suppression of irrelevant information from working memory) impact near and far inferencing among adolescent readers. Using path analyses, the current study evaluated the relations of near and far inferencing, vocabulary, general knowledge, strategy use, and word reading efficiency as well as components of working memory among 1,085 students in Grades 7-12. Results indicated that near inferencing has the largest direct effect on far inferencing. Further, in a model that also included direct and indirect effects of cognitive processes on far inferences, results suggested that working memory (β = .08, p = .02), suppression (β = .07, p =.03), near inferencing (β = .25, p < .001) and vocabulary (β = .18, p < .001) had significant direct effects on far inferencing; whereas suppression (β = .13, p < .001), passive resonance in memory (β = .12, p <.001), background knowledge (β = .12, p = .005), and vocabulary β = .27, p < .001) had significant direct effects on near inferencing. In sum, results suggest that cognitive processes impact inferencing among adolescents
Out of the box mit der Filmbox?
Insbesondere in größeren Aufgabensettings macht die Filmbox das flüchtige Medium differenziert (be-)greifbar und führt somit out of the box einer eher kollektiv-rezeptiven Filmarbeit.
Abstract (English): Out of the box with Filmbox? Practical experiences with a digital tool for film analysis
In comparison to reading, dealing with film is faced with the problem of the fixed sequence structure and the fleeting nature of the audiovisual text. In collective processes of reception and understanding, direct analytical operations are hardly possible and filmic means of representation remain largely inaccessible to deeper understanding. Enhanced options (in addition to existing ways of slowing down the audiovisual reception) become available with the digital tool Lichtblick, which is part of the Filmbox developed by the Akademie für Medienpädagogik, Medienforschung und Multimedia (Academy for Media Education, Media Research and Multimedia). In a working environment that is activated by a local server, films or clips can be edited individually, for example by extracting motion stills and excerpts, labeling them and adding graphic symbols and so-called markers pertaining to the language of film. The work results can be saved and shared with others. Practical experience with teacher training students at the University of Augsburg shows the tool\u27s filmdidactic effectiveness. Particularly in larger task settings, Filmbox yields a deeper understanding of the fleeting medium and thus leads out of the box of working with film in a more collective and receptive way.
