Development of an Optic Voltage and Current Sensors for Power Distribution Line applying a Technique of Optoelectronics
For the purpose of increasing electric power supply reliability in the distribution systems, high reliable voltage and current sensors for power distribution line must be needed. A strong demand for employing an optical voltage and current sensors in the distribution systems has recently increased because of an excellent electrical noise suppressing and good electrical insulation abilities. The authors have already reported the phase sequence voltage sensor system which consisted of the transverse type of Bi12 Geo20 (BGO) Pockels cell coupled as capacitor in series with an air gap.
In this work, by using Pockels' and Faradays' effects of BGO single crystal, the characteristics of optical sensors for measurement of voltage and current on power distribution line have been investigated by using various sized BGO Pockels cells. The BGO crystal is readily available for voltage and current sensors with regard to their sensitivity and temperature stability. The optical voltage sensors system for power distribution line fundamentally consists of the transverse type of Pockels cell coupled as capacitors in the series with an insulator and an air gap. As a result, it was found that by inserting an insulator in the series between Pockels cell and an air gap, an insulator acted on suppressing corona discharge occurring at the edges of Pockels cell. The effect of inserting an insulator resulted in improving the sensitivity of optical voltage sensor. Also, as a result, it was found that the current sensor could be applied for measuring the current in principle.departmental bulletin pape

Japanese Students' English Intonation
This paper investigates possible Japanese L1 transfer effects in the area of English intonation. First, hypotheses regarding the possible errors were generated based upon defferences in intonational structure between Japanese and English. Then, the hypotheses were tested auditorily and acoustically.
The analysis in this study reveals eight major types of errors made by japanese speakers of English: (1) giving the same vowel length between stressed and unstressed words in an utterance; (2) using one distinct pitch shape for pitch accents: a sharp rise followed by a sharp fall; (3) using smaller pitch excursions than native English speakers; (4) no tone-spreading phenomenon in required contexts; (5) no secondary accent in multisyllabe words in required contexts; (6) no deaccenting phenomenon in contrastive situations; (7) excessive use of boundaries in long phrases; and (8) delayed final rise for a question contour.
It is assumed that most of the above differences are due to Japanese speakers' L1 inteference. The implications of these results are discussed.departmental bulletin pape
The Systemization of the Language Laboratory and Our Self-Instruction Room in Miyazaki Municipal University --Through the Research on the Advanced Universities of the LL--
It is important for the students to learn languages voluntarily in the language laboratory (the LL) and our self-instruction room (the SI room).
In this article the author considers what the LL and the SI room should be, and how we should systemize the SI room as an audio-visual library and considers how effectively learners should use the SI room for language learning.
First, in order to grasp what the students of our university think and how they use the SI room, the author gave them 2 questionnaires (one in May and the other in July). Through the results of these questionnaires, the author was able to find some information. As a result of the questionnaires and the statistical analysis of how the students used the SI room, there are three points to consider. One is the need of the orientation for the students to use the SI room and another is to motivate the students to learn languages in the SI room and also to grasp the students' ability through the communication with the other English teachers and all other students.
Second, the author visited 14 universities for a research on the LL and the SI rooms of other universities. From my researsh, our university needs more staff and equipment to be installed to finish the systemization of the SI room as an AV library. I am indebted my colleagues at other universities who have given information to complete my task.
Lastly, the SI room should have a CALL system (that the author doesn't mention jn detail here) in the future plan of the SI room.departmental bulletin pape
Present Conditions and Problems of Computer Education in Miyazaki Municipal University
The role of the individual in our highly information-intensive society is changing as the economy shifts from an emphasis on physical labor to that of intellectual labor. Therefore, the computer is used in all the fields and the operation of the computer becomes indispensable to us. Our university specialized in the liberal arts; the necessity for information processing skills is high.
However, computer education rarely begins until Japanese students enter the university. Most of our students work with a personal computer for the first time when they enter the university.
In this paper, we examine ways of improving the computer education curriculum in our university. We found that the students are very interested in the personal computer from their answer to questionnaire we distributed this year. However, there are few students who understand what a personal computer is capable of doing. Also, learning about the personal computer, the difference in scholastic ability among the students was revealed. There are a number of problems to be addressed concerning computer education for liberal arts students. From now on, we are planning to solve them.departmental bulletin pape

Coping Behavior, Expectancy for Negative Mood Regulation, and Recovery From Depression: Review and Perspective
Although much theoretical and empirical work focuses on the cause of depression, little attention has been paid to the process of recovery from depression (RFD). This artcle, from the cognitive viewpoint, discusses the process of RFD. From previous studies, it is assumed that RFD is the process of negative mood coping or negative mood regulation.
First, the findings of the previous studies, focusing on the stress coping strategies(Lazarus) and coping responses to depression(Billing & Moos; Holahan & Moos), are disccussed. These studies showed that active and problem-focused strategies were related to the reduction of stress and depression. Second, a series of studies on "antidepressive behavior" (ADB; Rippere) is examined. The concept of ADB and the results of Rippere's studies may also be valid in examining of RFD. Third, theoretical and empirical studies on the generalized expectancy for negative mood regulation are discussed. It was found that this expectancy influenced the coping behavior to stress or depression and predicted the alleviation of depression.
These studies have merely focused on the cognitive aspects of the coping strategies. Futher study is needed to examine actual behaviors.departmental bulletin pape
