The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the support through creating oral 
biography and participation in a community exchange organization for socially isolated older adults. 
Effectiveness of the support was evaluated through using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The 
number of the participants in this study were four. In the quantitative evaluation using before and after 
comparative study, four outcome variables: social networks, life satisfaction, depressive symptoms, and 
self-esteem were measured at three times; before, 6 months and 1 year after the intervention. The 
qualitative evaluation was conducted by a qualitative descriptive method for two recourses: oral 
biography and observation for the participants. Although the results of the quantitative analysis did not 
give statistically significant results, it was the social network index that was effective. Based on the 
qualitative analyses, regarding self-history, first [hesitation to telling self-history] was observed. Then 
[switching to a positive attitude toward self-history] was appeared and finally [change to positive 
thinking] was happened. Regarding participation in a community exchange organization , after [searching 
for opportunities for interaction between participants, we observed that [promotion of their conversations 
through shared experiences between participants] , which contributed to closer psychological distance 
between them.
