Predictors of healthy physiological aging across generations in a 30-year population-based cohort study: the Doetinchem Cohort Study.
The most important predictors of healthy physiological aging were overweight-related (BMI, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio) and cholesterol-related (using cholesterol lowering medication, HDL and total cholesterol) measures. Diet and educational level also ranked in the top of important exposures. No substantial differences were observed in the predictors of healthy physiological aging across generations. The final prediction model's performance was modest with an R2 of 17%

What is going wrong? An exploratory study of causes of consumer accidents involving machines and portable climbing equipment
Many people perform odd jobs around the home (do-it-yourself or DIY), with the aid of products such as ladders and power saws. This makes them susceptible to accidents, and these do happen. As yet, little is known about the causes of these accidents. However, there is information available about what went wrong at the very last moment. Victims of ladder accidents, for example, often reach too far from the ladder, causing them to lose their balance. However, there has been no research into what happened before that last moment, causing things to go wrong. To piece together a clearer picture, RIVM compiled an overview of possible causes. RIVM discussed these possible causes with manufacturers of products and with experts on safety, risk assessment, psychology, and behaviour. It also interviewed DIYers. It appears that many factors can contribute to accidents involving power tools and ladders/step stools at home. Most of the causes reported by experts were attributable to the DIYers’ behaviour. This behaviour can be caused by misjudging a situation or by faulty reasoning. The environment and the products that are being used can also play a role. For example, experts believe that DIYers often know too little about a product before getting to work. They want to get the job done quickly and with as little effort as possible. In addition, they tend to underestimate the odds of an accident happening. They may also use products that are poorly suited for the job or outdated. Product design is also likely to contribute to unsafe usage. Other possible factors are working in a cramped space or the presence of people who influence the DIYer to not take the proper safety precautions. Many of the same issues were mentioned in interviews with DIY practitioners themselves. Examples are that they estimate the odds of an accident happening to be low and that they want to finish a job quickly and easily. This overview can be used for follow-up research into the causes of accidents in and around the home, with the ultimate aim to develop recommendations that can prevent such accidents
Every year, the Netherlands reports, both nationally and internationally, on the quantities of substances that are emitted to the air by the industry sector and energy generation and waste processing sector (ENINA). This entails all the substances that are listed in the Netherlands Pollutant Emission Register and must be reported for these sectors, including greenhouse gases, acidifying substances and substances that cause large-scale air-pollution. RIVM has updated and described the methods with which the emissions are calculated. These methods are adjusted every year according to the most recent scientific insights. Emission estimates are performed based on the international guidelines. The emission data is available to the public via the website emissieregistratie.nl. It is used for reports that are mandatory under international treaties such as the Paris Agreement, the EU Emission ceilings (NEC Directive) and the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP). These reports also form the basis for the international reviewers who validate the Dutch reports to the EU and UN.Nederland rapporteert elk jaar nationaal en internationaal hoeveel stoffen door de sectoren Industrie, Energieopwekking en Afvalverwerking (ENINA) worden uitgestoten naar de lucht.
Adherence to the EAT-Lancet Healthy Reference Diet in Relation to Risk of Cardiovascular Events and Environmental Impact: Results From the EPIC-NL Cohort.
Background The Healthy Reference Diet (HRD) was created to formulate dietary guidelines that would be healthy and sustainable. We aimed to construct a diet score measuring adherence to the HRD and to explore its association with cardiovascular events and environmental impact. Methods and Results We included 35 496 participants from the population-based EPIC-NL (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition-Netherlands) study. HRD scores were calculated using data from food frequency questionnaires (0-140). Data on morbidity and mortality were retrieved through linkage with national and death registries. Data on environmental impact indicators were obtained from life cycle assessments. Associations between adherence to the HRD and cardiovascular events were estimated with Cox proportional hazard models. Linear regression analysis was conducted for the adherence to the HRD and each environmental indicator. High adherence to the HRD was associated with 14%, 12%, and 11% lower risks of cardiovascular disease (hazard ratio [HR]Q4vsQ1, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.78-0.94]), coronary heart disease (HRQ4vsQ1, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.78-1.00]), and total stroke (HRQ4vsQ1, 0.89 [95% CI, 0.72-1.10]), respectively. High HRD adherence was associated with 2.4% (95% CI, -5.0 to 0.2) lower greenhouse gas emissions, 3.9% (95% CI, -5.2 to -2.6) less land use, 0.5% (95% CI, -2.6 to 1.6), less freshwater eutrophication, 3.3% (95% CI, -5.8 to -0.8), less marine eutrophication, 7.7% (95% CI, -10.8 to -4.6), less terrestrial acidification, and 32.1 % (95% CI, 28.5-35.7) higher blue water use. Conclusions High adherence to the HRD was associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and modestly lower levels of most environmental indicators but a higher level of blue water use
Indicative environmental risk limits for lithium in surface water
The amount of lithium being mined has increased over the years. This is mainly because of a rise in demand for batteries, for example for electric bicycles and cars. Lithium can end up in the environment during mining, end-product manufacturing and waste processing. It can also end up in surface water, where it can be harmful to aquatic plants and animals. The Netherlands currently has no scientifically supported standard for the safe concentration of lithium in surface water. As a result, the risks of lithium for aquatic plants and animals cannot be assessed properly. RIVM has therefore determined ‘indicative environmental risk limits’ for lithium in freshwater and seawater. Indicative environmental risk limits are derived in a short period of time to quickly provide information about potential risks. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) can use these limits to set ‘indicative water quality standards’. The indicative water quality standards are intended for licensing authorities. RIVM has calculated that a concentration of 11 micrograms per litre of water is safe for plants and animals in freshwater that are exposed to lithium for a longer period. For short-term exposure, RIVM has calculated that a maximum concentration of 210 micrograms per litre is safe. It is not possible to calculate a realistic, safe concentration for plants and animals in seawater with the method used for freshwater. The concentration that would be safe according to the standard methodology used is lower than the amount of lithium naturally found in seawater. It is likely that plants and animals in seawater are not negatively affected by the natural concentration of lithium present. RIVM therefore recommends conducting more extensive research to determine the safe concentration of lithium in seawater. Lithium compounds can have an effect on human reproduction. For that reason, a risk limit for surface water is needed to indicate whether people can safely eat fish from the relevant body of water. Based on the limited data available, RIVM expects that the proposed concentration of 11 micrograms per litre of water is also safe for humans. More research is necessary to substantiate this conclusion more firmly
