Vaccination coverage National Immunisation Programme in the Netherlands. Reporting year 2024

In the Netherlands, children can be vaccinated against 13 infectious diseases that could have serious consequences. Every year, RIVM reports the percentage of children who are vaccinated (the vaccination coverage). RIVM also outlines developments in the National Immunisation Programme (NIP). Vaccination coverage It appears that the vaccination coverage for infants and toddlers is the same as last year. For MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and meningococcal ACWY disease, the vaccination coverage may have even increased slightly. In older age groups (9 years and over), the coverage for most vaccinations has continued to fall. The changes in vaccination coverage have been estimated as accurately as possible, taking into account anonymous vaccinations. Since 2022, RIVM has been receiving anonymised data for some vaccinations. This means that RIVM no longer knows exactly how high the vaccination coverage is. Anonymous vaccinations cannot be included in vaccination coverage calculations. This is because the information necessary to determine vaccination coverage is unknown, such as the year in which the vaccinated child was born. The registered vaccination coverage is therefore lower than the actual vaccination coverage. Developments in 2023 Infectious diseases, including diseases for which vaccinations are available through the NIP, occurred less frequently due to the measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, more people contracted mumps, meningococcal disease, or whooping cough than during the pandemic. A new development is that, from the 2023/2024 flu season, pregnant women without a medical indication can turn to Youth Healthcare Services (JGZ) to get vaccinated against the flu. In addition, young people up to and including the age of 26 who were not yet fully vaccinated have been given the opportunity to get vaccinated against HPV. An RIVM survey in 2023 showed once again that most parents have a positive view of vaccination. That year, slightly fewer parents of children aged 9-14 felt positively about vaccination compared to 2022. This difference was not observed among parents of children under the age of 3.5 years

Nasopharyngeal microbiota in children is associated with severe asthma exacerbations

Cases showed higher Shannon diversity index (ICU and MCU combined; P = .002) and a distinct microbial community composition when compared with controls (permutational multivariate ANOVA R2 = 1.9%; P < .001). We observed significantly higher abundance of Staphylococcus and "oral" taxa, including Neisseria, Veillonella, and Streptococcus spp. and a lower abundance of Dolosigranulum pigrum, Corynebacterium, and Moraxella spp. (MaAsLin2; q < 0.25) in cases versus controls. Furthermore, Neisseria abundance was associated with more severe disease (ICU vs MCU MaAslin2, P = .03; q = 0.30). Neisseria spp. abundance was also related with fine particulate matter exposure, whereas Haemophilus and Streptococcus abundances were related with recent inhaled corticosteroid use. We observed no correlations with viral infection

A prioritization strategy for functional alternatives to bisphenol A in food contact materials

    No full text
The use of bisphenol A (BPA), a substance of very high concern, is proposed to be banned in food contact materials (FCMs) in the European Union. To prevent regrettable substitution of BPA by alternatives with similar or unknown hazardous properties, it is of importance to gain the relevant toxicological information on potential BPA alternative substances and monitor them adequately. We created an inventory of over 300 substances mentioned as potential BPA alternatives in regulatory reports and scientific literature. This study presents a prioritization strategy to identify substances that may be used as an alternative to BPA in FCMs. We prioritized 20 potential BPA alternatives of which 10 are less familiar. We subsequently reviewed the available information on the 10 prioritized less familiar substances regarding hazard profiles and migration potential obtained from scientific literature and in silico screening tools to identify a possible risk of the substances. Major data gaps regarding the hazard profiles of the prioritized substances exist, although the scarce available data give some indications on the possible hazard for some of the substances (like bisphenol TMC, 4,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, and tetrachlorobisphenol A). In addition, very little is known about the actual use and exposure to these substances. More toxicological research and monitoring of these substances in FCMs are, therefore, required to avoid regrettable substitution of BPA in FCM
