2022 Noise Monitor. Measurement and validation of noise levels from motorways and railways
De Geluidmonitor 2023 verschijnt in 2024.Since 2013, the road authority Rijkswaterstaat (Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management) and the rail authority ProRail, make a yearly calculation of the noise produced by road and rail traffic. As an independent party, RIVM tests these calculations by using measurements, as is its statutory duty under the Environmental Management Act. The 2022 Noise Monitor compares the noise levels measured along motorways and railways in 2021 to the calculated noise levels for that year. Along main railways lines the measured noise level in 2021was on average 0.5 dB above the calculated noise level. For motorways this was 2.7 dB. This significant difference has been noted for years. As a consequence, the rules for calculating noise from motorways have been adjusted to align more with the actual noise levels. The principal adjustment is the abolishment of the long-standing deduction for quiet tyres. These tyres have a less significant contribution to the decrease in noise levels than expected. These new calculation rules will apply under the new Environment and Planning Act, which will come into effect on 1 January 2024. Locally, the differences between the measured and calculated noise levels along motorways and railways can be much bigger. In the case of motorways this is mainly due to the age and condition of the asphalt. The noise level for older asphalt is higher than that for newer asphalt. For the main railway lines the principal causes are the number and types of trains and the wear of the rails. The 2022 Noise Monitor also includes the measurement results for 2022. The calculations for that year will be available by 1 October. They will be compared to the measured noise levels in the next Noise Monitor. The 2023 Noise Monitor will be published in 2024
Risks of painkillers in surface water. Choices in use based on environmental effects
Through urine and faeces, residues of medicines can end up in surface water, where they may be harmful to the organisms that live there. It is therefore important that fewer medicine residues end up in surface water. One option is to choose medicines that have the lowest impact on surface water. Both the healthcare sector and the water sector need information about this. The healthcare sector and patients can use the information to make informed choices. RIVM has investigated the impact on surface water of five painkillers, all available without a prescription. In addition, RIVM looked at the consequences for surface water if one painkiller were to be replaced by another. Particularly the amounts of diclofenac in surface water may be harmful to aquatic water. This is mainly due to the use of this product as a skin gel. Most of the gel is washed away by showering or washing of clothes, after which it ends up in surface water. If it is not necessary to use NSAID painkillers (diclofenac, ibuprofen or naproxen), paracetamol and aspirin are preferred from an environmental risk standpoint. It remains to be determined how this information can be included in, for example, the guideline for the treatment of pain. This guideline informs healthcare professionals about the choice of painkillers. It is also necessary to investigate what communication on the environmental risks of over-the-counter medicines could look like. For this study, RIVM calculated how much of the active ingredients of five painkillers end up in surface water through sewage. Other environmental impact indicators, such as the volume of greenhouse gases emitted during the production process, were not taken into account
Risk of death due to COVID-19 among current and former smokers in the Netherlands: a population-based quasi-cohort study.
CPE monitoring at a broiler processing plant
First-in-human controlled inhalation of thin graphene oxide nanosheets to study acute cardiorespiratory responses.
Graphene oxide nanomaterials are being developed for wide-ranging applications but are associated with potential safety concerns for human health. We conducted a double-blind randomized controlled study to determine how the inhalation of graphene oxide nanosheets affects acute pulmonary and cardiovascular function. Small and ultrasmall graphene oxide nanosheets at a concentration of 200 μg m-3 or filtered air were inhaled for 2 h by 14 young healthy volunteers in repeated visits. Overall, graphene oxide nanosheet exposure was well tolerated with no adverse effects. Heart rate, blood pressure, lung function and inflammatory markers were unaffected irrespective of graphene oxide particle size. Highly enriched blood proteomics analysis revealed very few differential plasma proteins and thrombus formation was mildly increased in an ex vivo model of arterial injury. Overall, acute inhalation of highly purified and thin nanometre-sized graphene oxide nanosheets was not associated with overt detrimental effects in healthy humans. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of carefully controlled human exposures at a clinical setting for risk assessment of graphene oxide, and lay the foundations for investigating the effects of other two-dimensional nanomaterials in humans. Compliance with advice on supplement use in the Netherlands. Phase 1: compile an overview of available knowledge and advice as a basis for follow-up steps
The human body needs micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and trace elements) in order to grow, develop and function. As the body can generate almost none of these nutrients itself, they need to be ingested through nutrition. For some groups of people in the Netherlands, their intake of several nutrients is likely to be too low, even though they consume a healthy and varied diet. That is why the Health Council of the Netherlands has advised that these groups take one or more supplements. As an example, the advice for women who want to become pregnant is to take folic acid. For a number of other groups – such as children up to and including the age of three, pregnant women and those aged over 70 – the advice is to take vitamin D. Other recommended supplements include vitamin K for babies and vitamin B12 for vegans. Little information is available as to whether these groups comply with this supplement advice closely. This is the outcome of a study conducted by RIVM. It is known that some pregnant women take folic acid and that some other groups take vitamin D. However, it is unclear which doses they take, how often and for how long. No information is available for any of the other vitamins. Similarly, little is known about the factors that encourage or prevent these groups from complying with the supplement advice. This information is key in order to assess whether people comply with the advice closely. This study was commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. It is the first phase of a more extensive investigation into the extent to which people in the Netherlands comply with the advice on supplement use. RIVM will conduct follow-up studies to explore how the necessary information might be obtained. The results may serve as input for solutions that will allow groups of people to comply with the advice more closely or as inspiration for alternative ways of ensuring that their intake of these nutrients increases. The advice for pregnant women to take calcium, iodine and fish-derived fatty acids was not covered by this study, among other things because it was issued only recently

Effects of hydrogen explosions
Hazardous substances, like hydrogen, have the potential to ignite or explode. In consideration of residents' safety, municipalities may impose specific requirements on new construction projects in areas with nearby businesses handling such substances. This also extends to transportation routes used for these substances. RIVM outlines the expected effects of explosions involving tanks containing hydrogen, considering various tank sizes. Based on this, calculations have been used to determine safe distances for both storing and transporting hydrogen. Municipalities and environmental services rely on this data to develop and select suitable safety measures. They assess whether additional precautions, such as reinforcing buildings or choosing alternative locations, are necessary. Additionally, structures can be protected from fires or explosions by constructing barriers such as embankments or walls. To provide effective guidance, it is crucial to understand the potential threats that measures aim to mitigate. Therefore, the research explains the nature of explosions, the process of a hydrogen explosion and the resulting damages. Calculations are conducted using an international model that is also utilised in the Netherlands, offering results that align closely with hydrogen accident experiences and practical field trials. Comparatively, hydrogen explosions yield more powerful effects per kilogramme than those of LNG (natural gas) or LPG (propane). However, despite this, explosions from LNG or LPG storage tanks are more forceful than those from equally sized hydrogen tanks. This discrepancy arises from the difficulty in compressing hydrogen, resulting in fewer kilogrammes stored in hydrogen tanks compared to LNG or LPG tanks. This research serves to address the relatively new use of hydrogen, which is crucial for facilitating the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable alternatives. The insights gleaned from this study have been used by RIVM to produce a brochure focusing on the effectiveness of explosion barriers, such as walls and embankments
Handreiking beoordeling PFAS in zwemwater
