Postgraduate Students’ Awareness and Search Skills for Accessing Online Library Databases in Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria
Nasarawa State University Library invests so much despite the shrinking budget by subscribing to online databases to ensure that users including postgraduate can access online information databases. However, observation and statistical usage of the online library databases are low. This is evidenced in the three years of statistical usage of ScienceDirect generated by Elsevier. This report is worrisome to stakeholders and thus, calls for a study of this nature. Based on the abovementioned scenario, the study investigates the postgraduate students\u27 awareness and search skills for online library databases. The study population comprised all the postgraduate students registered with the university library, totalling 2,540. A survey research design was adopted for the study. A simple random sampling technique was employed in this study, where 254 postgraduate students, representing 10%, were selected as a sample. A questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The data collected was analyzed using a bar graph. Results show that postgraduate students\u27 awareness of ProQuest, ScienceDirect, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law, and Hinari is very high. Most respondents used the title search technique (253) to access information resources on online databases. There is a need to create and provide access to courses online tutorials on how to locate information quickly through a variety of channels
Influence of Information and Communication Technology Skills as correlates of undergraduates\u27 use of Electronic Information Resources in Federal University Lokoja
Electronic information resource is germane source needed for academic exercise of undergraduate students. The study raised four research objectives; concerning information and communication technology skills as correlate of undergraduates use of electronic information resources in Federal University Lokoja, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of 459 undergraduates’ students purposively sampled from three departments with 400 level undergraduate students, where one each were selected from the three faculties. However, out of 459 questionnaires distributed, a total of 425 were duly returned representing 93% respondents. Findings revealed that electronic databases were the highest type of electronic information resource used, closely followed by online reference work. However, E- book management system (calibre) was the least utilize types of electronic information resources known to the respondents. The findings from the study revealed that most of the undergraduate students possessed low ICT skills in the study area. The findings further showed that the lecture hall and home were the major points where undergraduates in Federal University Lokoja accessed and use electronic resources more than the university library. Frequent downtime of server and lack of search skills were the major constraints to use of electronic information resources by undergraduates in Federal University Lokoja. It is recommended amongst others that there is need for library management in the study area to promote library services by raising awareness about the library offerings through various channels, such as social media, newsletters, and campus events. Also, the library management should implement a robust monitoring system to promptly identify and address any potential issues before they result in server downtime
Assessment of Information Resources Provided to Hepatitis Patients for Health Literacy by Librarians in Specialist Hospitals in North-Central, Nigeria
The study was on the assessment of information resources provided to hepatitis patients for health literacy by librarians in specialist hospitals of a North-central, Nigeria. The study was guided by two objectives. Survey research design was adopted for the study with a total population of 1,700 hepatitis patients and twenty (20) medical librarians in the specialist hospitals studied. The sample size of the population was 313 drawn from Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size table for determining the sample size of a population. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Out of 313 copies of questionnaire administered, 254 copies were filled, returned and used for the analysis. Descriptive statistical tool involving frequency counts and percentages, mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data. The findings of the study revealed that the types services provided in the specialist hospitals were library oriented services. The study revealed further that inadequate awareness of information resources and services, current information resources on hepatitis were factors affecting the level of health literacy among hepatitis patients in the study areas. The study recommended among others that the management of specialist hospitals in North-central, Nigeria should provide Internet services, use of e-mail, Short Message Services (SMS) in meeting the information needs of hepatitis patients and other users, create awareness of their information resources and services through library orientation, organising conferences, workshops, seminar and how they can be used to meet the information need of hepatitis patient
Perception of Dress Code Among Librarians in Kashim Ibrahim Library, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
This study assessed perception of dress code among librarians in Kashim Ibrahim Library, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Three (3) research questions guided this study to include type of dress code librarians prefer to wear to the offices; what is the perception of academic librarians towards dress code policy and Impact of Dress Code on Librarians\u27 Self-Perceptions. The research method adopted was survey. The population of this study comprised of all the academic Librarians in Kashim Ibrahim Library, A.B.U, Zaria. The total numbers of the respondents were ninety eight (98). The data related to the research questions were analyzed using frequency and percentage. The findings revealed that academic librarians preferred to dress in business casual attire. It also revealed that the Kashim Ibrahim Library at Ahmadu Bello University do not have a dress code policy, also that Dress code: present the right image (professionalism, competence). Dress codes enhance one’s self-perception of their occupational attributes (confidence). It was concluded that academic librarians have a positive perceptions of dress code and preferred to wear business casual to office, even though it was revealed that no policy was in place for dress code in Kashim Ibrahim Library. The study recommend that Kashim Ibrahim Library should adopt or formulate a written or verbal policy that guides employees’ appearance in thework place or developed more stringent dress codes that list accepted “do’s” and “don’ts” for the work place among others
Short Video Clips: a Tool for Teaching Library User Education in Colleges of Education in Nigeria
This study investigated adoption of short video clips as a tool for teaching Library User Education (LUE) in Colleges of Education in Nigeria. To achieve the objectives of the study, the study formulated the following research questions amongst others: What are the perceptions of LUE Lecturers on the relevance of Short Video Clips as a tool for teaching and Learning? What are the infrastructures available for the adoption of SVCs in teaching LUE in the Colleges of Education in the North West States of Nigeria? And What are the strategies required for the adoption of SVCs in teaching LUE in the Colleges of Education in the North West States of Nigeria? The research design adopted for this study was survey research method. A quantitative research methodology using the self – developed questionnaire was adopted as the instrument used to collect data in the study. The population of the study comprised of all academic staff, teaching Library User Education in the Colleges of Education in Northern States of Nigeria. The sample size of the study is one hundred and three (103) academic staff teaching Library User Education across the twelve Collages of Education in North West States, of Nigeria. A Total Enumerative sampling technique was used for the study. The study found that majority of the respondents agreed that short video clips are very relevant for effective teaching and learning; Android and I-Phones which many lecturers owned had been identified as a major infrastructure that could be used to create short video clips; and linking short video clips with overall learning objectives of library users education was identify as a vital strategy for adopting short video clips in teaching and research. The need for more sensitization on the relevance of short video clips in teaching library user as well as re-training and retooling of the lecturers teaching library user education in Colleges of Education was recommended
Librarian’s Attitude, Perception and Skills for Effective Marketing Strategies in Libraries in a Changing World
The study was an attempt to study librarian’s attitude, perception and skills for application marketing strategies in library and information centers in the changing world occasioned by innovations. Relevant literatures relating to the study were reviewed. It was a descriptive survey research and the population of the study comprised of 1,167 librarians working across libraries of various types (public library, academic library and research, and special library) in Nigeria through purposive sampling techniques. The study was guided by three research questions and the data was collected through validated questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using statistical mean to answer the research questions. The theoretical framework for the study was marketing mix theory by McCarthy. The findings of the study revealed an overall mean rating of Xar3.19 which showed that librarians in Nigeria had positiveattitude toward the application marketing strategies for library and information services. The respondents had positive perception toward the application of marketing strategies in libraries with an overall mean rating of Xar3.06. The study revealed anoverall mean rating of Xar3.05 of the research question on the skills and it is an indication that librarians have the skills required in the application marketing strategies for library and information services and needed to put it in use
Steps to improving Library Services Through Artificial Intelligence in Nigerian Libraries
Latest technological development in the twenty-first century has brought a dramatic change in every field, and library science is no exception. Like any other fields, Librarianship is also incorporating many fascinating technologies into their armories. This research looked into the conceptual background of artificial intelligence (AI), library services, and the application of AI in library services. The study also reviewed existing literatures on the impact of AI on library services and the extent of its application in Nigeria libraries. The findings show that AI can improve library services like; circulation and reference services, book shelving and shelve reading, cataloguing of library materials, analyzing big data, creating metadata, interpreting search items among others. The research goes on to discuss some of the factors that affect the use of AI in academic libraries such as funding, lack of maintenance, lack of experts in AI, erratic power supply as well as possible strategies to solve the problems: developing policy for AI, consultation, adequate funding, employment of AI experts among others
Determinants of Electronic Information Services (EISs) Provision by Librarians in Public Universities in South-East Nigeria
The study examined determinants of electronic information services provision by librarians in public universities in South-East Nigeria. The correlational research design was adopted for the study, with a population of 84 librarians (who are heads of their university libraries and library departments). The entire population was studied through the census sampling technique. Data was collected using two researchers-made questionnaire and one semi-structured interview schedule. Data was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings of the study revealed that while word processing and online search skills have strong positive relationships with electronic information services provision by librarians, web 2.0 skills have a strong negative significant relationship with electronic information services provision by librarians in the public university libraries in South-East Nigeria. Problems of subscription, poor internet connectivity, inadequate power supply, lack of dedicated Web 2.0 tools and lack of regular training of librarians were identified as factors militating against electronic information services provision by librarians in public university libraries in South-East Nigeria
