English Medium Instruction in Higher Education: Global Trends, Challenges, and the Call for Multilingual Approaches

    No full text
This review article examines the widespread adoption of English Medium Instruction (EMI) in higher education, driven by globalization and the need to prepare students for the international job market. While EMI aims to enhance English proficiency and academic and employment prospects, it also presents challenges in terms of linguistic equity, pedagogical effectiveness, and the academic success of students. Through a synthesis of research, this review explores the implications and challenges of EMI and scrutinizes the assumption that EMI inherently improves English proficiency alongside content learning. The article also critiques the monolingual ideology of EMI policies and advocates for the recent call by researchers for a multilingual approach that includes translanguaging practices to better accommodate the linguistic diversity of student populations. In doing so, it highlights the need for a critical reassessment of EMI implementation based on the suggestion that by integrating students’ wider linguistic resources, EMI can evolve from its monolingual origins to embrace a more effective and equitable multilingual framework

Semiotic mediation for the sustainable digital empowerment of older adults

    Get PDF
As digital technologies proliferate, older adults are still facing significant challenges in achieving sustainable digital empowerment. This qualitative study examines the metaphorical registers spontaneously mobilized by seniors when discussing digital tools. It also highlights subjective semiotic framings which hinder their digital acculturation. Through ethnographic observations of digital literacy training, we identify diverse metaphorical projections conveying apprehensions (technologies as “nests of problems”, “magical” realms) but also motivating drivers towards meaningful digital appropriation. The findings underscore the importance of symbolic mediation strategies, in order to deconstruct inhibiting traditional theories and foster technology uses rooted in the life contexts of seniors. By elucidating the complex interplay of cognitive, emotional and cultural tensions shaping digital relationships, our research project argues for designing digital training less as technical instruction than as holistic empowerment journeys integrating identity-related dimensions. Ultimately, research on these semiotic foundations contributes to broader societal efforts that ensure equal voices for diverse knowledge approaches in an increasingly AI-dominated world. Only through such inclusive mediation efforts can we truly accompany digital “immigrants” toward affirmative technological citizenship

    No full text
For the purposes of this study, a roximately 480 names of organizations from various fields were analyzed, including pharmacies, bookstores, educational centers, shops, restaurants, pastry shops, travel agencies, beauty and health salons, etc. From the collected material, 13 names with different methods of formation, including borrowing, were selected in order to study the degree of perception and comprehension of the names by consumers. The names were collected using Google Maps and personal observations in the major regional cities in Bulgaria (Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas). The results showed a variety of reasons for the use of foreign languages in commercial names. After the linguistic interviews, it was found that, according to some of the respondents, foreign languages sound more modern and contemporary, while others associate them with the practical need to facilitate communication with foreign visitors. However, the majority of respondents clearly prefer the use of the Bulgarian language, which reflects the importance of cultural identity in the urban onomastic space

    No full text
People watch what others watch. We hear it so many times, but is it true? With data collected on the top 10 movies and TV series on six platforms for ten countries, this text will try to prove or disprove this claim. The platforms do not disclose exactly how their own algorithm works, but surely, the users of the platforms pay attention to the recommendation made by the platform. And according to the data we analysed, consumers prefer new – produced in the last three years – movies and TV series with a few exceptions that only prove the rule. How user choice is influenced by the percentage of Google user likes and the rating of the largest platform for movies and series – IMDb– is the focus of the text
