    The genetic characterization of grapevines prospected in old Serbian vineyards reveals multiple relationships between traditional varieties of the Balkans

    Serbia preserves a high number of local grape varieties, which have been cultivated across the country for centuries. Now, these ancient varieties are in the spotlight, and there is a global trend towards their recovery and characterization because they can revitalize regional, national and international grape and wine sectors. In addition, their genetic study can be useful to find new pedigree relationships to reveal how local varietal assortment evolved over time. Here, the genetic characterization of 138 grapevines from old Serbian vineyards revealed 59 different genetic profiles, 49 of which were identified as grapevine varieties whose origin in the country could be linked to some major Serbian historical periods. Most of the genetic profiles found in this work arranged in a complex pedigree network that integrates numerous grapevine varieties from diverse Balkan countries, agreeing with an intense exchange of plant material among Balkan regions for centuries. This analysis identified some varieties as important founders of Balkan genetic resources, like 'Alba Imputotato', 'Braghina Rosie', 'Coarna Alba', and 'Vulpea'. After deepening into their genealogy, these major direct founders might have ultimately derived from 'Visparola', an ancient variety of likely Balkan origin with a major founding role in some European regions. Our results also indicated the genetic singularity of the grapevine resources from the Balkans when compared to those from other relevant winemaking regions, supporting the interest of their detailed study to evaluate their oenological potential and for the eventual identification of useful traits to counteract current viticulture challenges.M215.613916791

    Landscape structure and composition affect aphid biological control in alfalfa fields, but regional differences prevail

    Understanding how landscape composition and configuration drive the dynamics of pests and their various natural enemies is crucial to enhance biological control services (biocontrol). Geographic variability in landscape effects prompts questions about whether this is due to genuine differences or methodological differences among studies, given that most studies are conducted in a single region. This study investigated how the ecological function of parasitoids and predators responds to landscape traits in three regions encompassing an agriculture intensification gradient. The effects of landscape structure and configuration differed among regions and natural enemies. Non-crop habitats increased the abundance of parasitoids only in two less intensified regions presumably due to insufficient amount of non-crop habitats in the intensified region (typically < 10%). Nevertheless, their biological control efficiency (BCE) was consistently increased by non-crop habitats across regions. Higher maize proportion increased predator abundance and their BCE in the two non-mountainous regions. The value of maize as a source habitat for predators may have been limited in the mountainous region due to the lower aphid abundances there. Edge density positively affected abundances of predators and parasitoids, but only positively increased the BCE of all natural enemies combined. Inconsistent regional responses to the same landscape variables suggest that a uniform integrated pest management strategy for alfalfa is impractical.     The land snail fauna of Pakistan is poorly known. During surveys conducted in the summer months of 1990–1992 the Pupilloidea was the most diverse and commonly encountered group of land snails. The Chondrinidae, Cochlicopidae, Orculidae, and Pyramidulidae are reviewed herein. Sphyradium doliolum (Bruguière, 1792) is recorded from Pakistan for the first time. New Pakistan records for Granopupa lapidaria (Hutton, 1849), Cochlicopa cf. lubrica (O. F. Müller, 1774), and Pyramidula humilis (Benson, 1838) are provided. Pyramidula cf. salimalii is reported from localities other than the type locality for the first time. An unidentifiable species of Pyramidula is also reported.M5110511932

    In this paper, we provide the first data on the occurrence of the trematode Leucochloridium perturbatum Pojmanska, 1969 in Serbia. This is also the first record of the genus Leucochloridium Carus, 1835 from the country. Trematodes were found pulsating in the tentacles of the amber snail Succinea putris (Linnaeus, 1758). Collected broodsacks are described, and short notes about the habitat where specimen was found are given.M5120320633

    Konjac glucomannan/microcapsule of thymol edible coating reduces okra pericarp browning by regulating antioxidant activity and ROS synthesis

    Okra is susceptible to browning during storage. The effects of konjac glucomannan/microcapsule of thymol edible coating (TKL) on antioxidant activity and reactive oxygen (ROS) synthesis of okra during low-temperature storage were investigated. Thymol edible coating of thymol concentration 40 mg/mL (TKL40) had a regulatory effect on okra browning. After 14 days of storage, compared with the control group, the weight loss rate of TKL was reduced by 5.26 %, the hardness was increased by 24.14 %, and the L⁎ value was increased by 31 %. Moreover, TKL40 increased the scavenging capacity of okra for DPPH and ABTS free radicals, and activated catalase and superoxide dismutase activities by promoting the accumulation of total phenolics and flavonoids. TKL40 also reduced the cell membrane damage of okra during low-temperature storage by reducing the increase of malondialdehyde and H2O2 during okra storage. Meanwhile, it delayed the increase of relative conductivity and the production of O2.-, inhibited the activity of polyphenol oxidase in the late stage, so reduced the combination of polyphenol oxidase and phenolics to reduce the browning.
