Association between genetic variants in hsa-miR-27a and hsa-miR-146a gene and male infertility
Background: miRNAs have enormous potential to be used as diagnostic and prognostic markers as well as therapeutic targets in male infertility and diseases of the reproductive system. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the two functional genetic variants in the hsa-miR-27a (rs2910164) and hsa-miR-146a gene (rs895819) and male infertility in North Macedonian population, as well as to test their association with the values of major seminal parameters. Methods: The case group included in this study comprised 158 men initially diagnosed with idiopathic male infertility. The control group included 126 age-matched healthy male volunteers who fathered at least one child. Results: We report for the first time the association of rs2910164 minor allele C with the increased susceptibility to asthenoteratozoospermia. Additionally, our results indicating the association of allele C with low sperm vitality are a novel finding. We did not demonstrate the association between genetic variant rs895819 and the risk of different types of male infertility. Still, the number of participants with CC genotype in subjects diagnosed with asthenoteratozoospermia was null, while in controls it reached 7.2%. We further detected the rs895819 genotype-dependent difference in rapid progressive sperm motility. Conclusions: The association of rs2910164 and rs895819 with idiopathic male infertility in general is unlikely. However, both of these variants show association with certain types of male infertility and with sperm abnormalities, which need to be confirmed in later studies in different ethnic groups.M232.54
The small china-mark Cataclysta lemnata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae: Acentropinae) in Serbia
The Western Palaearctic moth Cataclysta lemnata (Linnaeus, 1758) is considered one of Europe’s most common water moths. However, there are limited data regarding the larval stages, particularly in eastern and southeastern Europe. During the 2017-2021 aquatic macroinvertebrate survey, C. lemnata was detected at seven sites in the Pannonian region of Serbia. All sightings were of the larval/aquatic phase and originated from both heavily polluted habitats and relatively unpolluted waterbodies. A consistent feature at all sites is duckweed (Lemna sp.), confirming the preference of C. lemnata for this plant. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the presence of this species in the region and suggest that it may be more abundant in its various aquatic habitats. As the adult stages are simpler to identify, and with the advent of public online databases (Alciphron, biologer.rs), there have been multiple records of adult moths in recent years. Regarding the aquatic stages, there is a need for more comprehensive surveys with a primary emphasis on suitable habitats throughout the region and the use of molecular methods for the identification of early larval stages would be beneficial.M5129

Pauesia is a diverse genus within the Aphidiinae subfamily, comprising about 80 species across the Holarctic region. Despite their diversity and distribution, a comprehensive modern revision of the species has yet to be undertaken. So far, six species have been recorded in Serbia. Our study identified three species new to the Serbian fauna:Pauesia similis Starý, 1966, P. juniperorum (Starý, 1960), and P. silvestris (Starý, 1960). Data on the location and tritrophic associations of the collected material are provided, as well as an identification key for Pauesia females in Serbia. We present two new trophic associations, both involving Pinus peuce Griseb. (Macedonian pine): P. similis and P. piceaecollis reared from Cinara aphids.29
First record of the species Encyonema bonapartei Heudre, C.E.Wetzel & Ector (Cymbellales, Bacillariophyceae) in Serbia
Encyonema bonapartei Heudre, C.E.Wetzel & Ector is a diatom species originally documented in 2016, following its discovery in three canals in the eastern region of France. In 2021, an extensive hydrobiological survey in a mountainous part of southwestern Serbia led to the first finding of this taxon outside of France, i.e. in the Uvac Special Nature Reserve –in Lake Zlatar (Zlatarsko jezero) and in the Marić River (Marića reka). Detailed light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy observations of a large population recorded in Lake Zlatar confirmed the unique morphological characteristics of E. bonapartei, which is also the first record for the diatom flora of Serbia. The present work provides new information on the distribution and ecological preferences of E. bonapartei, taking into account physical and chemical characteristics of its habitats in Serbia.M230.929029853
