Cerebral ischemia biomarkers: Their roles in early diagnosis and prognosis with potential clinical applications
Cerebral ischemia, caused by a disruption in blood supply to the brain, remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Identifying reliable biomarkers for the early diagnosis and prognosis of cerebral ischemia is crucial for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on cerebral ischemia biomarkers, focusing on their potential role in early detection and prediction of clinical outcomes. Specifically, we discuss the current advances in the field of cerebral ischemia biomarkers, which serve as essential tools for early diagnosis and monitoring of ischemic stroke. We examine several promising biomarkers, including omics data, genetic (FOXF2 and ATP5H), physiological and neuroinflammatory biomarkers, neuroimaging markers, blood-based biomarkers (proteins, microRNAs, and metabolites), and newer modalities such as exosomes, microvesicles, and cell-free deoxyribonucleic acid (cfDNA). In addition, we highlight the challenges and future directions in translating these biomarkers into clinical practice. Standardization and reproducibility, methodological limitations, and cost and accessibility are critical challenges in the translation of biomarkers into clinical practice. Addressing these challenges requires multi-stakeholder collaborations and coordinated efforts to establish standardized protocols, improve analytical methods, and develop cost-effective biomarker assays. The use of point-of-care testing devices or miniaturized lab-on-a-chip technologies can reduce costs and improve accessibility, particularly in low-resource settings. Furthermore, collaborations between academia, industry, and regulatory agencies can facilitate the translation of biomarkers by addressing regulatory and reimbursement hurdles that affect the affordability and availability of these tests.27502

Taxonomic and functional traits of macroinvertebrate community along fish farming pollution gradient: Taxonomic sufficiency for reliable bioassessment
The expansion of fish farming globally, driven by rising demand for fish as a food source, has raised substantial environmental concerns due to its impact on aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the effects of fish farming effluents on taxonomic and functional diversity of macroinvertebrate community and test how taxonomic resolution impacts their effectiveness as pollution indicators. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected from seven trout farms, with sampling sites categorized based on proximity to farm effluents. Results indicate that fish farming effluents significantly alter macroinvertebrate communities, with observable changes in both taxonomic and functional metrics. Although traditional taxonomic metrics revealed differences along the pollution gradient, functional diversity measures provided more sensitive indicators of ecological changes. Functional traits, even at coarse taxonomic resolutions, better reflected shifts in ecological processes than taxonomic diversity alone. The study supports integrating both taxonomic and functional diversity measures in river restoration and management practices to optimize pollution detection and ecological assessment. Combining taxonomic and functional approaches in bioassessment is recommended for better evaluation of water quality and ecosystem health. Functional attributes can simplify routine monitoring, especially for poorly known macroinvertebrate taxa. Nevertheless, metrics related to chironomids showed significant changes along the pollution gradient and were useful for detecting fish farm effluents. Chironomid data at both fine and coarse taxonomic levels revealed the impact of pollution effectively.M21a9.817712895
Diversity and ecology of freshwater Ostracoda (Crustacea) in Central Serbia
The diversity of Ostracoda in Central Serbia is relatively unknown. With the aim of exploring this diversity, and increasing the overall knowledge on their ecology, this study was carried out over a mountainous area in Central Serbia and some parts of the Vojvodina province. In total, 46 samples were collected from 36 water bodies, with several different habitat types. Ostracods were present in 22 of those water bodies, at 27 sites. A total of 17 species were recorded, six of which are new additions to the fauna of Serbia. A multivariate analysis (Canonical Correspondence Analysis) of ostracod communities and their relationship with measured environmental factors is given, with four out of five measured environmental factors showing a significant relationship with the distribution of recorded species. These were water temperature, altitude, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen, while pH was not significant. A cluster analysis (UPGMA) of the samples in which ostracods occurred was also performed using Jaccard distances. It grouped samples into 7 clusters, primarily defined by presence/absence of certain species. In addition, the proportion of non-cosmopolitan ostracod species was calculated for each sample, as well as for geographically grouped samples, to investigate if the percentage of non-cosmopolitan species potentially correlates with the observable state of sampling sites, mainly in terms of anthropogenic pressure and/or habitat degradation.M221.761764058
The Slithering Dead: Does locomotor performance affect post-capture death feigning in dice snakes (Natrix tessellata, Laurenti 1768)?
Functional constraints between different types of antipredator behavior should be common, especially if they are on the opposite sides of the behavioral spectrum such as flight and post-capture immobility. We examined a potential compromise between post-capture immobility displays and sprint speed in dice snakes (Natrix tessellata), using a field-based approach. We sampled snakes (N=238) from two populations: from a dense island population free of mammal predators, and from a less dense mainland population, preyed upon by both bird and mammal predators. We explored the effects of sexual maturity, temperature, body size, presence of palpable food in the gut and injuries on the occurrence and duration of post-capture immobility as well as sprint speed. Our results confirm the existence of functional constraints between locomotor performance and post-capture immobility in dice snakes. Faster dice snakes start escaping promptly after release, while slower individuals utilize more passive antipredator behaviors such as death feigning. Local adaptations seem to have great influence on behavioral compromise, since the mammal-free island population exhibited a higher incidence of post-capture immobility and a significantly lower sprint speed, compared to the less dense mainland population. Additionally, immature individuals tended to avoid death feigning and their post-capture immobility lasted shorter compared to adult individuals. It remains to be seen how individuals adjust their behavior to accomodate locomotor constraints, and in which specific phases of the predator-prey interaction these adjustments occur.M211.
Do juvenile four-lined snakes Elaphe quatuorlineata mimic their sympatric viper?
In this note, we describe a case of a juvenile four-lined snake, Elaphe quatuorlineata (Lacépède, 1789) displaying bluffing behaviour. Besides providing a description of the context which elicited the behaviour, we argue that this could be a case of Batesian mimicry between juvenile E. quatuorlineata and the sympatric nose-horned viper, Vipera ammodytes meridionalis (Boulenger, 1903) due to the close geographical association between these species, similar colour pattern and defensive behaviours.323516
Chara squamosa (Characeae, Charophyceae) in Serbia - insights from the taxonomic revision of the BEOU charophyte collection and recent field records
Chara gymnophylla is one of the first charophyte species reported for Serbia during the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, and at that time it was the second in terms of the frequency of its occurrence in the country. General taxonomic misinterpretations in the past resulted in the concealment of another species, C. squamosa, within the findings attributed to C. gymnophylla. In Serbia, Chara gymnophylla was treated as C. vulgaris var. gymnophylla, and as such was not listed as a species inhabiting the country. Recent improvements in the taxonomic concept for C. squamosa prompted a revision of the rich material of C. gymnophylla, C. vulgaris var. gymnophylla, C. vulgaris var. nitelloides, and C. rohlenae, deposited in the BEOU collection. The revision process was conducted concurrently with fieldwork and the collection of new material. Our study confirmed the presence of C. squamosa in Serbia for the first time. Based on numerous revised samples from the BEOU collection, as well as recently collected specimens, the species’ continuous presence in Serbia since 1976 was confirmed. Chara squamosa and C. gymnophylla were thus added to the list of Characeae species inhabiting Serbia, and categorised as Critically Endangered according to the criteria outlined by IUCN. An overview of the biogeography, ecology and taxonomy of C. squamosa in Serbia is provided, particularly in relation to C. gymnophylla. The BEOU charophyte collection proved to represent a valuable and relevant resource for critical taxonomic revisions. The results presented in this study strongly encourage further studies on C. squamosa and C. gymnophylla distribution in the Balkan region and wider area in order to gain a deeper understanding of the species’ ecology and the further improvement of their taxonomic concepts.M230.9859248
