miR-146a expression and the miR-146a gene variant rs2910164 as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of oral cancer
This study aimed to analyze the diagnostic and prognostic significance of miR-146a-5p in oral cancer and the association of the rs2910164 gene variant with miR-146a-5p expression. Thirty-five oral cancer patients participated in the study. Expression of miR-146a-5p in oral cancer, adjacent non-cancerous tissue, and the rs2910164 genotype variant were examined by real-time PCR. No difference was observed in miR-146a-5p expression between cancerous and non-cancerous tissues (P=0.272). It was concluded that miR-146a-5p is not a good diagnostic biomarker. There was no difference in miR-146a-5p expression depending on the rs2910164 genotype. The rs2910164 variant was associated with tumor histological grade (P=0.037), stage (P=0.036), and lymph node status (P=0.025). There was a difference in survival between oral cancer patients with high and low miR-146a-5p expression (P=0.026), but not between patients with the GG and GC genotypes (P=0.400). Oral cancer patients with the wild-type GG genotype and high miR-146a-5p expression had significantly shorter survival when compared to patients with miR-146a-5p expression below the optimal cut-off and the wild-type genotype (P=0.035). A high miR-146a-5p level could be considered a potential biomarker of poor survival in patients with oral cancer, especially in those with the wild-type GG genotype of the rs2910164 variant.M220.841942976
Lignocellulose as a sustainable option for bioethanol production by fungal lignocellulosomes - a review
This review presents current advances and future perspectives for bioethanol production by fungal lignocellulosomes, based on studies conducted in the last few decades. The key steps for obtaining fermentable sugars for bioethanol production from lignocellulose are its pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification. Lignocellulosics are abundant and cost-effective sources as a potential “green” substitution for fossil fuels. Therefore, it is not surprising that the powerful fungal lignocellulolytic enzymes have been intensively studied, especially in terms of environmentally friendly economic and social development. The effects of fungal co-cultivation on the capacity of their lignocellulosomes are also discussed. As bioethanol production has not yet developed on a large scale, the future of this field lies in redesigning enzyme cocktails and reducing limitations in the conversion process. Lignocellulose is definitely a promising source for biofuel production, but on the way to its successful transformation are obstacles that will be overcome by future research.M221.310751090589-1
Fruit micromorphology and morphometry of eight wild-growing roses in Serbia
This study investigates the micromorphology and morphometrics of aggregate fruit (ripe hypanthium and achene) of eight wild Rosa species collected throughout Serbia. Field research was conducted to find roses at different habitats, collecting 1,836 aggregate fruits with 25,999 achenes from 137 shrubs. Multicellular glandular trichomes are found on the hypanthium surface, while long and short stalk capitate glandular trichomes were observed on the fruits of R. gallica, R. pendulina, R. tomentosa and R. villosa. Numerous unicellular non-glandular trichomes were found inside the urceolate hypanthium and on the surface of most studied achenes, except for R. spinosissima species. Micromorphological analysis revealed three types of exocarp ornamentation: scalariform (R. dumetorum, R. tomentosa and R. micrantha), reticulate (R. gallica, R. arvensis, R. spinosissima and R. villosa) and reticulate-smooth (R. pendulina). Morphometric analysis indicated significant differences among the 14 morphological characters. Achene length was the most significant morphometric feature for identifying Rosa species (P˂0.05). The results contribute to our poor knowledge of rose fruit morphology and provide some well-defined microcharacters that could be used as additional features for species delimitation.M221.6823835158
Urinary Extracellular Vesicles as a Readily Available Biomarker Source: A Simplified Stratification Method
Urine, a common source of biological markers in biomedical research and clinical diagnosis, has recently generated a new wave of interest. It has recently become a focus of study due to the presence of its content of extracellular vesicles (EVs). These uEVs have been found to reflect physiological and pathological conditions in kidney, urothelial, and prostate tissue and can illustrate further molecular processes, leading to a rapid expansion of research in this field In this work, we present the advantages of an immunoaffinity-based method for uEVs' isolation with respect to the gold standard purification approach performed by differential ultracentrifugation [in terms of purity and antigen presence. The immunoaffinity method was made feasible by combining specific antibodies with a functionalized polymethacrylate polymer. Flow cytometry indicated a significant fluorescence shift, validating the presence of the markers (CD9, CD63, CD81) and confirming the effectiveness of the isolation method. Microscopy evaluations have shown that the morphology of the vesicles remained intact and corresponded to the expected shapes and dimensions of uEVs. The described protocol is inexpensive, fast, easy to process, has good reproducibility, and can be applied to further biological samples.M215,68004251

A new Toxares Haliday and Aphidius Nees species with notes on the variability of Toxares deltiger (Haliday) (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)
The genera Aphidius Nees, 1818 and Toxares Haliday, 1840 both belong to the subfamily Aphidiinae, a group whose members are obligatory koinobiont endoparasitoids of aphids (Hemiptera, Aphididae). While Toxares is a small genus with only five known species from the Holarctic and Oriental regions, Aphidius is the most diverse within the subfamily with more than 130 recognised species distributed worldwide. Here we describe two new species discovered in the collection of Naturalis Biodiversity Center: Toxares fovealis sp.n. from Europe (the Netherlands) and Aphidius breviflagellaris sp.n. from Eastern Asia (South Korea). We also analyse genetic and morphological variability of Toxares deltiger (Haliday, 1833) specimens collected in Europe and redescribe the species.M221.510220927
