Measuring Effects of Technology-Enabled Mirroring Scaffolds on Self-Regulated Learning

    No full text
Learning design in a massive open online course (MOOC) intends to promote creativity, autonomy, and social networked learning, amongst other things. Students in a MOOC are required to self-regulate their learning to properly self-monitor their learning process and effectiveness of the adopted learning strategies. This paper presents the results of a study among 279 students enrolled in a MOOC that was enriched with a set of scaffolding interventions for social mirroring. The mirroring interventions supported social awareness and social embeddedness of learners. Associations between the use of the interventions and microlevel self-regulated learning processes were measured and analyzed. The extent to which those associations are affected by learner demographics and motivational characteristics was also investigated. Findings show that interventions that provide students, throughout the course, with learning updates and progress of peers are associated with the students' engagement with learning tasks and applying changes in strategies for completing those tasks. Social awareness scaffold influenced more students low in need for cognition, with a higher education degree, high in performance-approach orientation and low in grit, to engage with their learning tasks, while its effect on the change in learning strategies was higher with those early and towards the end of their careers and high in performance-approach strategy. The social comparison scaffold affected more students low in mastery goal orientation and high in grit to work on their learning tasks

A Multicriteria Decision Aid-Based Model for Measuring the Efficiency of Business-Friendly Cities

    No full text
Local self-government has the task of enabling stable economic development, in addition to enabling a normal quality of life for citizens. This is why the state government should provide guidelines that will improve the local business climate, and by doing so enable local economic development. This can be done through the introduction of a business-friendly certification procedure, which is influenced by uncertain inputs and influences many output factors. Each local government has the important task of determining its rank of efficiency in this process. A number of methodologies developed to solve this problem are generally divided into two groups: Parametric and non-parametric. These two groups of methodologies could provide quite different results. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to create a model using both approaches to achieve a balanced symmetrical approach that produces better results than each approach individually. For this purpose, the paper describes a multicriteria decision aid-based model of optimization to evaluate the effectiveness of this process, integrating classification, data envelopment analysis, and stochastic frontier analysis, as well as its application in a case study of business-friendly certification in the Republic of Serbia

Analytics of Learning Strategies: the Association with the Personality Traits

    No full text
Studying online requires well-developed self-regulated learning skills to properly manage one's learning strategies. Learning analytics research has proposed novel methods for extracting theoretically meaningful learning strategies from trace data originating from formal learning settings (online, blended, or flipped classroom). Thus identified strategies proved to be associated with academic achievement. However, automated extraction of theoretically meaningful learning strategies from trace data in the context of massive open online courses (MOOCs) is still under-explored. Moreover, there is a lacuna in research on the relations between automatically detected strategies and the established psychological constructs. The paper reports on a study that (a) applied a state-of-the-art analytic method that combines process and sequence mining techniques to detect learning strategies from the trace data collected in a MOOC (N=1,397), and (b) explored associations of the detected strategies with academic performance and personality traits (Big Five). Four learning strategies detected with the adopted analytics method were shown to be theoretically interpretable as the wellknown approaches to learning. The results also revealed that the four detected learning strategies were predicted by conscientiousness, emotional instability, and agreeableness and were associated with academic performance. Implications for theoretical validity and practical application of analytics-detected learning strategies are also provided

The aim of this paper has two directions. The first one is our attempt to define new method and procedure for estimating surplus of employees in the public sector, as one of the tools for public sector control. The second direction is the analysis of the public sector at the local level in Serbia, where overstaffing in public utility companies, founded and owned by Local Self-Government Units in Serbia, was analyzed using specific methods. The conclusions have been made on the basis of the restructuring projects carried out in over 20 public utility companies, which included over 20,000 employees

The Influence of Business Process Prioritization on Success of BPM adoption

    No full text
Business process management (BPM) has a central role for creating sustainable competitive advantage, but there is still large number of unsuccessful BPM projects. Business process improvement (BPI) is important phase of BPM lifecycle and for BPI a main decision-making task is t. prioritizes processes that should be improved and managed. The purpose of this paper is to examine the way formalized approach to business process prioritization (BPP) impacts adoption of BPM in organization. BPM adoption was measured through Process performance index (PPI). A survey research was conducted on a sample of 91 manufacturing and service companies in Serbia and collected data were analyzed using statistical package SPSS. The results suggest that companies with larger extent of BPP formalization have higher PPI. This shows that BPP formalization is positively related to success of BPM adoption. By formalizing the procedure for BPP, it is possible to efficiently make decisions about processes that need to be improved and managed, which ensures more successful adoption of BPM in organizations

Where is the link between entrepreneurial ecosystem components and country's innovation output? A global study

    No full text
Purpose: The aim of the research is to detect the relationship between entrepreneurial ecosystem (EE) components and innovation output of countries, and to determine whether the strength of this relationship depends on country's cluster affiliation at different income levels. Design/methodology/approach: To globally examine the strength of relationship between EE elements and innovation output, we analysed the correlation between the pillars of Global Entrepreneurship Index (GEI) and Global Innovation Index (GII) output sub index. To analyse if this relationship depends on income level (thus, development level) of a country, we divided countries into clusters and repeated the process in these separate groups. The analysis was performed on a set of 117 countries that are ranked in both GEI and GII report for 2019. Findings: The results show a significant moderate to high positive correlation between EE dimensions and innovation output (both Creative output and Knowledge and technology output). Technology Absorption and Process Innovation show the strongest relationship with the examined innovation output measures. Additionally, the results show that this relationship considerably varies among the observed groups of countries clustered by the income level. Research/practical implications: The results can be used by policymakers to get more insights on the ecosystem institutional framework relationship with country's innovation output. By further deeper examination of concrete indicators feeding into these pillars, implications can be derived for the ecosystem improvements. This implies that it is possible to identify the domains of the EE that could be strengthened for better innovation performance of a country. It is also shown that there is a rationale behind observation of countries by their income level, for creating appropriate strategic directions for boosting innovation output through strengthening their EE. Originality/value: The results of the empirical research show the relationship between the EE components and innovation output and how the relationship varies across countries based on their level of development (income). The results are based on the data of globally recognized and widely applied methodologies, GEI and GII (Innovation Output Sub index)

C Tutor usage in relation to student achievement and progress: A study of introductory programming courses in Portugal and Serbia

    No full text
Previous research studies on introductory programming courses in engineering education in Portugal and Serbia have indicated that although high motivation and high expectations seem to be reported by students, many students may fail the course. This prompted a further inquiry into student attitudes, behavior, and achievement, and it also led to the introduction of C Tutor, a widely known program visualization tool, into courses in both countries. As a result, in the present study, self-reported student achievement (grades), self-reported student progress (knowledge improvement and confidence), and self-reported usage and helpfulness of C Tutor were investigated. Anonymous data about students and their experience in the course, which also included the usage of C Tutor, were collected in a survey in Portugal and Serbia. Quantitative methods, including descriptive statistics, clustering, statistical testing of independence, and partial correlation analysis, were applied in analyses of survey data. The distribution of grades differed between the two countries, but overall attitudes were similar. Various uncovered patterns involving student attitudes and usage of C Tutor may serve as a starting point for new research studies
