    A Stranger in Charleston: Intersectional Anxiety as a Latina in Academia

    Through a personal narrative of my experiences living in Charleston, South Carolina, I consider several problems faced by working-class academics of color. These include: isolation and alienation, being labeled a representative for an entire cultural group, higher service loads, confronting patriarchy and racism in and out of the classroom, and financial struggle. Through telling my story, I examine positionality and the anxieties resulting from the normative expectations placed on academics who are often the first in their families and communities to enter academia. I also emphasize the need for academics facing these problems to form support networks and practice self-care

    Publish AND Perish: On Publishing, Precarity and Poverty in Academia

    We have all heard the phrase ‘publish or perish’ but what does perishing actually look like? Are you publishing and still perishing? In this article, Vossen probes into the complexity of academic publishing from her perspective as both a poor PhD student and the editor-in-chief of Game Studies publication First Person Scholar. Vossen argues that academic publishing (examining both journal articles and academic manuscripts) exploits the labour of grad students and contract workers by encouraging them to publish their work without compensation in the hopes of attaining tenure-track employment in the future. This ‘work for exposure’ method is dependent on the optimism of young scholars, the majority of whom will not attain tenure-track positions. Vossen focuses specifically on how academic journal articles function as both currency and commodity, devaluing alternative forms of research sharing (such as the work published in First Person Scholar) which is seen as ‘academic waste’ that doesn't ‘count’. Academic journal articles are intrinsically linked to an academics ‘worth’ both culturally and financially and therefore, many untenured academics feel they can't take the financial risk of publishing outside of traditional venues for fear of furthering their descent into debt and poverty. Vossen and the staff of First Person Scholar have attempted to remedy the system in their field of Game Studies by both paying academics for their writing and firmly rejecting opportunities to become an academic journal to instead be considered a ‘middle state publication’. Lastly, Vossen discusses opting out of the publish or perish game as a grad student and what you lose when you decide not to play

    The hyperplanes of DW(5,F) arising from the Grassmann embedding

    The hyperplanes of the symplectic dual polar space DW(5; F) that arise from the Grassmann embedding have been classied in [B.N. Cooperstein and B. De Bruyn. Points and hyperplanes of the universal embedding space of the dual polar space DW(5; q), q odd. Michigan Math. J., 58:195{212, 2009.] in case F is a finite field of odd characteristic, and in [B. De Bruyn. Hyperplanes of DW(5;K) with K a perfect eld of characteristic 2. J. Algebraic Combin., 30:567{584, 2009.] in case F is a perfect eld of characteristic 2. In the present paper, these classifications are extended to arbitrary fields. In the case of characteristic 2 however, it was not possible to provide a complete classification. The main tool in the proof is the classification of the quasi-Sp(V; f)-equivalence classes of trivectors of a 6-dimensional symplectic vector space (V; f) obtained in [B. De Bruyn and M. Kwiatkowski.     On the closure of the completely positive semidefinite cone and linear approximations to quantum colorings

    We investigate structural properties of the completely positive semidefinite cone CS+\mathcal{CS}_+, consisting of all the n×nn \times n symmetric matrices that admit a Gram representation by positive semidefinite matrices of any size. This cone has been introduced to model quantum graph parameters as conic optimization problems. Recently it has also been used to characterize the set Q\mathcal Q of bipartite quantum correlations, as projection of an affine section of it. We have two main results concerning the structure of the completely positive semidefinite cone, namely about its interior and about its closure. On the one hand we construct a hierarchy of polyhedral cones covering the interior of CS+\mathcal{CS}_+, which we use for computing some variants of the quantum chromatic number by way of a linear program. On the other hand we give an explicit description of the closure of the completely positive semidefinite cone by showing that it consists of all matrices admitting a Gram representation in the tracial ultraproduct of matrix algebras

    The enhanced principal rank characteristic sequence (epr-sequence) of an n×nn \times n symmetric matrix over a field \F was recently defined as 12n\ell_1 \ell_2 \cdots \ell_n, where k\ell_k is either A\tt A, S\tt S, or N\tt N based on whether all, some (but not all), or none of the order-kk principal minors of the matrix are nonzero. Here, a complete characterization of the epr-sequences that are attainable by symmetric matrices over the field Z2\Z_2, the integers modulo 22, is established. Contrary to the attainable epr-sequences over a field of characteristic 00, this characterization reveals that the attainable epr-sequences over Z2\Z_2 possess very special structures. For more general fields of characteristic 22, some restrictions on attainable epr-sequences are obtained

    Whitebark Pine (Pinus albicaulis), snow and refugia in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem

    Research and management issues related to pine forests, snowpack and refugia are relevant to mountainous ecosystems globally. For this study, we investigated local snowpack longevity as an explanatory variable for whitebark pine performance (survival rate, growth rate and condition). We used Sentinel-2 imagery to monitor local snowpack longevity. This new imagery is spatially and temporally more appropriate than other publicly available satellite imagery, and early results indicate that Sentinel-2 imagery can be successfully used for this purpose. Sites were selected based on a multi-decade management effort by federal agencies to plant whitebark pine in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Relative to initial planting records, present-day field sampling affords an opportunity to evaluate whitebark pine performance over time.   Featured photo from Figure 3 in report

    Nitrogen fluxes in Western streams

    Nitrogen pollution to streams is altering the nitrogen cycling in unknown ways, causing challenges for predicting nitrogen fixation fluxes within aquatic ecosystems. Increasing nitrate pollution decreases the amount of nitrogen fixation occurring in streams. However, the relationship between stream nitrate concentration and the rate of nitrogen fixation is unknown. We predict that lower nitrate streams will have the highest rates of nitrogen fixation. Additionally, there will be much more energy produced in streams with nitrogen fixation compared to the amount required to fix the nitrogen. We estimated whole-stream gross primary production and nitrogen fixation fluxes using the diel change in dissolved nitrogen and oxygen gases compared to the expected dissolved gas saturation. Our whole-stream method is preferable to chamber estimates to understand the relationship between energy requirements for nitrogen fixation and gross primary production, but additional data is needed to distinguish between relationship types and make our measurements generalizable.   Featured photo by Intermountain Forest Service, USDA Region 4 Photography on Flickr. https://flic.kr/p/jbTRU
