Three Spirits: Breakdowns Present, Past and Yet to Come
This paper is a meditation on processes of social abjection within working-class life, on how they have changed and yet how they remain haunted by the possibility of an otherwise, especially in relation to bodily and mental and emotional pain and distress, anguish and torment, otherwise classified as depression, or nymphomania, or hypersexualisation, or anxiety, or paranoia and so on. Social abjection is a process of rendering certain lives and life experiences as unreadable except as social detritus. Working-class pain is abject, individualised and still often shamed. And the process of abjection is itself painful and not without the marks of struggle. Usually the role of women is to offer comfort and strength, often through classed practices of care and mothering (Crean,2018). But what happens when it is the women whose pain is abject? The haunting I am writing about here therefore is the haunting possibility of a return to a more collective approach to such distress, a return to a sense of future possibility as yet unfulfilled. In order to bring this possibility more fully to mind, I consider Martin Parr’s photographs recently in an exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery and Alisha’s poetry which was posted as part of her work with The Agency, (a creative project with young people). These rather different art works open up the question of how ‘mental health’ emerges as a threshold at which both capital-based violences and a resistant working-class affect can be found
Caring for the Internet: Content Moderators and the Maintenance of Empire
Scholarly and journalistic investigations of content moderation have thoroughly documented its emotional impact on workers, but have yet to analyze moderation as care labor. Out of sight from U.S. and European consumers, content moderators are hired by third-party outsourcing firms primarily in the Philippines or India to remove offensive or violent content from internet platforms in order to preserve their profitability and users’ emotional well-being. Situating content moderation in the long history of domestic labor relations in the U.S., which were designed to support the expansion of imperial power, this essay proposes new ways of understanding the relationship between affective labor and the procedures of empire

Solution of symmetric positive semidefinite Procrustes problem
In this paper, the symmetric positive semidefinite Procrustes problem is considered. By using matrix inner product and matrix decomposition theory, an explicit expression of the solution is given. Based on the explicit expression given in this paper, it is easy to derive the explicit expression of the solution given by Woodgate [K.G. Woodgate. Least-squares solution of F = PG over positive semidefinite symmetric P . Linear Algebra Appl., 245:171–190, 1996.] and by Liao [A.P. Liao. On the least squares problem of a matrix equation. J. Comput. Math., 17:589–594, 1999.] for the Procrustes problem in some special cases. The explicit expression given in this paper also shows that the solution of the special inverse eigenvalue problem considered by Zhang [L. Zhang. A class of inverse eigenvalue problem for symmetric nonnegative definite matrices. J. Hunan Educational Inst., 2:11–17, 1995 (in Chinese).] can be computed exactly. Examples to illustrate the correctness of the theory results are given
Weak Log-majorization of Unital Trace-preserving Completely Positive Maps
Let Φ : Mn → Mn be a unital trace preserving completely positive map and A ∈ Mn be a positive definite matrix. Weak log-majorization and weak majorization between Φ(A) and A are studied. Determinantal inequalities between Φ(A) and A are obtained as a consequence. By considering special classes of unital trace preserving completely positive map, some known matrix inequalities such as Fischer’s inequality are rediscovered. An affirmative answer to a question of Tam and Zhang in 2019 is given
Eigenvalue continuity and Gersgorin's theorem
Two types of eigenvalue continuity are commonly used in the literature. However, their meanings and the conditions under which continuities are used are not always stated clearly. This can lead to some confusion and needs to be addressed. In this note, the Geršgorin disk theorem is revisited and the issue concerning the proofs of the theorem by continuity is clarified
Block GLT Sequences: Matrix Functions and Engineering Application
The theory of block generalized locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences is a powerful apparatus for computing the spectral distribution of block-structured matrices arising from the discretization of differential problems, with a special reference to systems of differential equations (DEs) and to the higher-order finite element or discontinuous Galerkin approximation of both scalar and vectorial DEs. In the present paper, the theory of block GLT sequences is extended by proving that is a block GLT sequence as long as is continuous and is a block GLT sequence formed by Hermitian matrices. It is also provided a relevant application of this result to the computation of the distribution of the numerical eigenvalues obtained from the higher-order isogeometric Galerkin discretization of second-order variable-coefficient differential eigenvalue problems (a topic of interest not only in numerical analysis but also in engineering)
