    Academic Work as Factory Work: A Former Blue-Collar Worker’s Observations on Class and Caste in the Academy

    What was it like to have come of age after the Glorious Thirty (1945-1975), an era Jack Metzger (2016; 2021a) describes as a time when the working-class bettered their lives? I had the misfortune to have worked in several Metropolitan Detroit factories during the period of decline after the Glorious Thirty. During that time, I witnessed what the journalist George Packer (2013) has called ‘the Unwinding,’ the unraveling of the social contract that has left the working class to their own devices to find success and salvation. In keeping with the tradition in working-class studies of sharing lived experienced of class (Linkon, 2021, pp. 20-31; Strangleman, 2005, pp. 137-51), I highlight my multiple working-class lives to show that academic life is increasingly becoming more like blue-collar labor. Through a discussion of the concepts of class and caste, and the uniqueness of working-class culture, I propose that working-class academic crossovers are essentially ghosts trapped in a liminal limbo in an intellectual version of a contemporary factory that is largely devoid of the benefits of working-class culture

    Sphero Versus Dragon Ball-Z

    The lesson begins with a challenge to complete a specific course using a Sphero Spark Plus robot. Spheros were selected for this activity since they provide students with highly engaging opportunities to engaging in productive struggle to master mathematical concepts (Wheeler, Smith & Gardner   ,2020).  Through questioning, students review properties of right triangles, the Pythagorean Theorem, and protractor use before strategically block-coding a path through the course. Students were given a traced practice course, but the final test was to take their Sphero to the “official track” which had bumpers.     Real dimension of the Lie algebra of S-skew-Hermitian matrices

    Let Mn(C)M_n(\mathbb{C}) be the set of n×nn\times n matrices over the complex numbers. Let SMn(C)S \in M_n(\mathbb{C}). A matrix AMn(C)A\in M_n(\mathbb{C}) is said to be SS-skew-Hermitian if SA=ASSA^*=-AS where AA^* is the conjugate transpose of AA. The set uS\mathfrak{u}_S of all SS-skew-Hermitian matrices is a Lie algebra. In this paper, we give a real dimension formula for uS\mathfrak{u}_S using the Jordan block decomposition of the cosquare S(S)1S(S^*)^{-1} of SS when SS is nonsingular

    A novel, blocked algorithm for the reduction to Hessenberg-triangular form

    We present an alternative algorithm and implementation for theHessenberg-triangular reduction, an essential step in the QZalgorithm for solving generalized eigenvalue problems. Thereduction step has a cubic computational complexity, and hence,high-performance implementations are compulsory for keeping thecomputing time under control. Our algorithm is of simplemathematical nature and relies on the connection betweengeneralized and classical eigenvalue problems. Via system solving andthe classical reduction of a single matrix to Hessenberg form, we areable to get a theoretically equivalent reduction toHessenberg-triangular form. As a result, we can perform most of thecomputational work by relying on existing, highly efficient implementations,which make extensive use of blocking. The accompanying error analysisshows that preprocessing and iterative refinement can benecessary to achieve accurate results. Numerical results showcompetitiveness with existing implementations

    Gau, Wang and Wu in their LAMA'2016 paper conjectured (and proved for n4n\leq 4) that an nn-by-nn partial isometry cannot have a circular numerical range with a non-zero center. We prove that this statement holds for n=5n=5

    K-subdirect sums of Nekrasov matrices

    In this paper, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the subdirect sum of a Nekrasov matrix and a strictly diagonally dominant matrix being still a Nekrasov matrix. Adopting this sufficient and necessary condition, we present several simple sufficient conditions ensuring that the subdirect sum of Nekrasov matrices is in the same class. Examples are reported to illustrate the theoretical results

    A Teacher’s Guide to Copyright, Fair Use, and Creative Commons in the United States

    This multi-day lesson introduces preservice teachers to copyright laws and how they influence resource use. The lesson also introduces fair use principles and components of a fair use claim before describing the limitations of fair use for practicing teachers. Creative Commons licenses are then introduced and explained as a better approach for resource use. Creative Commons resources are still protected by copyright law. However, the authors/owners of these works automatically grant some use rights under specified conditions. This granting of rights leads to a discussion about open education resources (OER). After this discussion, learners discover how to locate Creative Commons resources, cite them, and use them appropriately. Time: Two, 50-minute classe
