Community Inequalities and Children’s Life Chances in the United States

    No full text
This piece discusses the growing empirical evidence that the communities where American children spend their formative years—not just the households they are raised in but where those households are located—matter for their prospects of success in subsequent stages of their lives. The authors explore the various community characteristics—including social capital, family structure, school quality, and income—associated with educational attainment, health, teen pregnancy, social mobility, violence, crime victimization, and more

    Teaching for Accessibility: Introduction

    No full text
Technology regularly helps people communicate ideas and information; explore the world; and capture, store, and interpret large amounts of information. However, some learning environments may prevent individuals from accessing these resources. Fortunately, guidance exists to develop more widely accessible materials and tools. This special issue of the Journal of Technology-Integrated Lessons and Teaching (JTILT) focuses on professional development workshops, lessons, activities, and materials to facilitate accessibility

Upper bounds on the algebraic connectivity of graphs

    No full text
The algebraic connectivity of a connected graph GG is the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of GG. In this paper, some new upper bounds on algebraic connectivity are obtained by applying generalized interlacing to an appropriate quotient matrix

    Spectral Slater index of tournaments

    No full text
The Slater index i(T)i(T) of a tournament TT is the minimum number of arcs that must be reversed to make TT transitive. In this paper, we define a parameter Λ(T)\Lambda(T) from the spectrum of the skew-adjacency matrix of TT, called the spectral Slater index. This parameter is a measure of remoteness between the spectrum of TT and that of a transitive tournament. We show that Λ(T)8i(T)\Lambda(T)\leq8\, i(T) and we characterize the tournaments with maximal spectral Slater index. As an application, an improved lower bound on the Slater index of doubly regular tournaments is given

A note on semiscalar equivalence of polynomial matrices

    No full text
Polynomial matrices A(λ)A(\lambda) and B(λ)B(\lambda) of size n×nn\times n over a field F\mathbb {F} are semiscalar equivalent if there exist a nonsingular n×nn\times n matrix PP over F\mathbb F and an invertible n×nn\times n matrix Q(λ)Q(\lambda) over F[λ]\mathbb F[\lambda] such that A(λ)=PB(λ)Q(λ)A(\lambda)=PB(\lambda)Q(\lambda). The aim of this article is to present necessary and sufficient conditions for the semiscalar equivalence of nonsingular matrices A(λ)A(\lambda) and B(λ) B(\lambda) over a field F{\mathbb F } of characteristic zero in terms of solutions of a homogenous system of linear equations

Positive linear maps and spreads of normal matrices

    No full text
We obtain some inequalities involving positive linear maps on matrix algebra. The special cases provide bounds for the spreads of normal matrices
