On condition numbers of quaternion matrix inverse and quaternion linear systems with multiple right-hand sides

    No full text
This paper is devoted to the condition numbers of quaternion linear system with multiple right-hand sides and the associated condition numbers of the quaternion matrix inverse as well. The explicit expressions of the unstructured and structured normwise, mixed, and componentwise condition numbers for the system are given. To reduce the computational cost of the condition numbers, compact and tight upper bounds for these condition numbers are proposed. For general sparse and badly scaled problems, numerical examples show that mixed and componentwise condition numbers are preferred than the normwise condition number for estimating the forward error of the solution, and structured condition numbers are tighter than the unstructured ones for some specific structured problems

Reverse order law and forward order law for the (b, c)-inverse

    No full text
The reverse order law and the forward order law have been studied for various types of generalized inverses. The (b,c)(b,c)-inverse is a generalization of some well known generalized inverses, such as the Moore-Penrose inverse, the Drazin inverse, the core inverse, etc. In this paper, the reverse order law for the (b,c)(b,c)-inverse, in a unital ring, is investigated and an equivalent condition for this law to hold for the (b,c)(b,c)-inverse is derived. Also, some known results on this topic are generalized. Furthermore, the forward order law for the (b,c)(b,c)-inverse in a ring with a unity is introduced, for different choices of bb and cc. Moreover, as corollaries of obtained results, equivalent conditions for the reverse order law and the forward order law for the inverse along an element are derived

Decompositions of matrices into a sum of invertible matrices and matrices of fixed nilpotence

    No full text
    For any n2n\ge 2 and fixed k1k\ge 1, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for an arbitrary nonzero square matrix in the matrix ring Mn(F)\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{F}) to be written as a sum of an invertible matrix UU and a nilpotent matrix NN with Nk=0N^k=0 over an arbitrary field F\mathbb{F}

The maximum spectral radius of graphs with a large core

    No full text
The (k+1)(k+1)-core of a graph GG, denoted by Ck+1(G)C_{k+1}(G), is the subgraph obtained by repeatedly removing any vertex of degree less than or equal to kk. Ck+1(G)C_{k+1}(G) is the unique induced subgraph of minimum degree larger than kk with a maximum number of vertices. For 1kmn1\leq k\leq m\leq n, we denote Rn,k,m=Kk(KmkInm)R_{n, k, m}=K_k\vee(K_{m-k}\cup {I_{n-m}}). In this paper, we prove that Rn,k,mR_{n, k, m} obtains the maximum spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius among all nn-vertex graphs whose (k+1)(k+1)-core has at most mm vertices. Our result extends a recent theorem proved by Nikiforov [Electron. J. Linear Algebra, 27:250--257, 2014]. Moreover, we also present the bipartite version of our result

Minimal rank weak Drazin inverses: a class of outer inverses with prescribed range

    No full text
For any square matrix AA, it is proved that minimal rank weak Drazin inverses (Campbell and Meyer, 1978) of AA coincide with outer inverses of AA with range R(Ak)\mathcal{R}(A^{k}), where kk is the index of AA. It is shown that the minimal rank weak Drazin inverse behaves very much like the Drazin inverse, and many generalized inverses such as the core-EP inverse and the DMP inverse are its special cases

    Nullities of cycle-spliced bipartite graphs

    No full text
For a simple graph GG, let η(G)\eta(G) and c(G)c(G) be the nullity and the cyclomatic number of GG, respectively. A cycle-spliced bipartite graph is a connected graph in which every block is an even cycle. It was shown by Wong et al. (2022) that for every cycle-spliced bipartite graph GG, 0η(G)c(G)+10\leq\eta(G)\leq c(G)+1. Moreover, the extremal graphs with η(G)=c(G)+1\eta(G) = c(G)+1 and η(G)=0\eta(G) =0, respectively, have been characterized. In this paper, we prove that there is no cycle-spliced bipartite graphs GG of any order with nullity η(G)=c(G)\eta(G)=c(G). Furthermore, we also provide a structural characterization on cycle-spliced bipartite graphs GG with nullity η(G)=c(G)1\eta(G)=c(G)-1

Bounding real tensor optimizations via the numerical range

    No full text
A new method of using the numerical range of a matrix to bound the optimal value of certain optimization problems over real tensor product vectors is presented. This bound is stronger than the trivial bounds based on eigenvalues and can be computed significantly faster than bounds provided by semidefinite programming relaxations. Numerous applications to other hard linear algebra problems are discussed, such as showing that a real subspace of matrices contains no rank-one matrix, and showing that a linear map acting on matrices is positive

Experiences of academic-activists in Ireland: comfortable and uncomfortable activism in the current institutional environment

    No full text
While there is a lack of academic-activist themed literature within the Irish context, it is evident that academic-activism is becoming an increasingly relevant topic given this period of undoubtable social change. The emergence of literature depicting academia as an unsupportive environment suggests that activism is not supported in a higher educational setting. This paper draws on the experiences of 33 Irish-based academic-activists and investigates the concepts of comfortable and uncomfortable academic-activism which were identified during the analysis. By exploring the experiences of academic-activists at varying career stages, this article argues that an academic’s ability to exercise academic freedom is influenced by the type of activism, the sociopolitical identity of the individual and the institutional environment. Overall, this paper offers interesting comparisons between disadvantaged/marginalised academic-activists in comparison to those in more privileged positions.&nbsp

Problems and possibilities for Swedish working-class literature in a neoliberal age

    No full text
In recent decades, inequality has increased in Sweden. The increasing gaps are connected with policies that are often called neoliberal. How does working-class literature relate to these social problems and what literary possibilities does it open up? In this article I discuss these questions based on some literary examples from Swedish contemporary working-class literature. These literary examples have attracted much attention. My perspective is that I see working-class literature as literature with a distinct use value and a literature that has specific functions in the working-class literature context (Felski, 2008). Kristian Lundberg, Johan Jönson and Jenny Wrangborg all give personal accounts from workplaces. Such can be valuable. The problem with Lundberg and Jönson is that they tend to be introverted and egocentric. Especially Lundberg lacks the class perspective. Perhaps Lundberg’s Yarden (The Yard, 2009) should be described as confessional literature rather than working-class literature. With Susanna Alakoski the working-class is hidden behind the concept of poverty. The working-class as actor is absent. The labor movement as well. Instead, it is the middle class who appear as actor. Through the role of jester, Jönson makes class society visible. The role of jester could be seen as a specific rhetorical strategy and a literary device to create a distancing effect, or Verfremdungseffekt. Wrangborg connects to the legacy of early working-class literature with struggle poems. From within the workplace she describes work situations and experiences of class. Emil Boss takes a close look at language and concepts in a postpolitical age when old concepts have changed meaning. It is a crucial task for working-class literature to explain, interpret and examine old concepts that have changed meaning in a new political era, when the labor movement has lost contact with previous ideals and social democratic governments pursue rightwing politics, thus making it difficult to distinguish between left and right.&nbsp
