Do they return for food? Exploring the role of memorable food experiences and destination image

    No full text
The study investigates the intricate relationships among local food experiences, memorable tourism experience, destination image and tourists’ revisit intentions. The research employed a quantitative research design. Data collection was conducted between January and March 2024 and analysed with structural equation modelling. Results indicate that while local food may not directly impact revisit intentions, it significantly shapes memorable tourism experiences and destination image. Memorable experiences, in turn, strongly predict revisit intentions. Local food serves a crucial role in enhancing destination image, contributing to overall attractiveness. However, the direct influence of destination image on revisit intentions could have been more conclusive, warranting further investigation into mediating factors and contextual influences. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating local food into destination branding and management strategies to enhance tourists’ perceptions and increase revisit intentions. Future research should explore additional factors influencing revisit intentions and clarify the complex relationships between local food, memorable experiences, destination image and tourist behaviour

COVID-19 as a Family Stressor: A Life Course Exploration of Family Stress Among Rural Grandparents and Their Adult Children in Upstate New York

    No full text
COVID-19 has brought about many changes for rural families, affecting their family roles, childcare responsibilities, financial status, and experiences of family stress. In this study, I examine (1) how rural grandparents and their adult children perceive family stress related to their family roles and responsibilities during COVID-19 and (2) how rural grandparents and their adult children have coped with the stress of family roles and responsibilities during COVID-19. Data comes from 44 in-depth interviews. The findings of this study suggest that COVID-19, a family stressor, has been the source of stress among rural grandparents and their adult children. The findings suggest that families adapted through a range of improvised strategies such as relocating, abstaining from employment, taking on additional childcare, and adjusting personal identities to maintain stability during uncertainty. These adaptations were not merely practical but often guided by moral and faith-based reasoning, allowing participants to maintain agency despite constraints. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, grandparents played a significant role in childcare, sometimes to the point of being the primary childcare providers (Harrington Meyer 2014). COVID-19 has further complicated the roles and responsibilities of rural grandparents and their adult children. COVID-19 brought changes to rural families, particularly in the areas of their employment, family roles and relationships, childcare responsibilities, and sense of hope

    No full text
This article addresses the issue of creating urban spatial disorder through the deposition of waste in unauthorized locations. The analysis encompasses social practices related to littering, abandoning trash, and the creation of illegal dumps, as well as remedial actions undertaken by various institutional entities responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in the municipality, and interventions undertaken by local media and residents. As part of the project titled “Illegal Dumping: Creating Social Order and Disorder in Urban” (2023/51/B/HS6/02545), researchers analyzed 54 media intervention programs from Toya Television addressing this issue, aiming to answer the following questions: 1) “which entities (individual, collective, institutional) are involved in the problem of illegal dumping?”; 2) “what relationships exist between these entities?”; 3) “what causes of this problem are identified in local media, and what solutions are proposed?”; and, finally, 4) “what aspects of the phenomenon are omitted in media discourse?”. The researchers consider the role of green spaces in the city in the context of the location of spaces of disorder. Finally, they undertake a methodological reflection on the status of the collected data and the relationship between the codes and analytical categories generated on the basis of media intervention programs in relation to the described social reality.

The article presents the results of an analysis that focused on the biographical narrative of a middle-aged man who, before finding himself in a homeless shelter, struggled for most of his life with a lack of his own existential place. Four types of recurring lived experiences emerged from his life story, related respectively to: a sense of homelessness; ways of coping with it; the experience of settling down in the world; and the inability to settle down anywhere for long. Through them, more rudimentary structures resonated, which, on a more general level, were responsible for giving meaning to lived experiences.W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki analizy, której przedmiotem była narracja biograficzna mężczyzny w średnim wieku.

“A word can heal, a word can kill.” This maxim expresses admiration for the possibilities of the word, which can influence not only thinking, but also the sphere of the subconscious. In particular, in the archaic era, it was believed that spells, incantations and curses (charms) can bind or destroy evil forces. In the folklore of many peoples and in the literature of the most ancient civilizations, we find vivid examples of this kind of creativity based on suggestion. It is possible that it was in this lyrical form that the artistic word as such was born. However, similar moments are found both in the ancient epic, and in the most modern works of literature and art, and in the utilitarian rhetorical word - gossip, justice, advertising, politics, etc., which often appeal not only to the voice of reason, but also to the sphere of emotions, hints, manipulation. All this is united by a common attitude to suggestion, which lies in the deep foundations of human communication. This term comes from Indian culture, where spiritual practices are associated with the concept of “Brahma\u27s sleep:” God–Creator of the world sleeps and sees us and our world in a dream; hence the Sanskrit term व्यञ्जन (vyanjana) – the power translated by the English as a suggestion. A suggestion is perceived by the brain uncritically, and logic often only reinforces the emotional impulse. Ways of suggestion include psychological mechanisms that have not yet been fully explored. But suggestion is one of the fundamental factors of culture. Primitive thinking in general was pre-logical, imaginative and emotional; the ability to think logically was formed in the area of the left hemisphere of the brain in the process of evolution. But the psychological mechanisms that turn a cloud into a dragon, a Lamb into an abusive Wolf, or Ukraine into a malicious aggressor against Russia continue to live in the minds of our contemporaries, taking on the appearance of a folkloric literary, artistic, sacred, legal or journalistic text, like the mythological Proteus. It is characteristic that modern psychology uses the method of affirmation, which clearly resembles the techniques of verbal magic; neuro-linguistic programming is spreading – coding of the psyche, etc. But all this requires some kind of integration in the counterpoint of religious-philosophical, ethical-moral, social-ethical and artistic-aesthetic searches of humanity, which can be carried out from the point of view of a culturologist. Verbal incantation magic is not localized in the realm of ancient folklore, but has had modifications in various spheres of culture over the millennia. However, if the actual archaic verbal magic, the experience of ancient rhetoric from persuasion of the interlocutor or the techniques of creating an artistic image in poetry are studied with due completeness, then the use of techniques of suggestion in modern mass culture is covered very unevenly: Areas such as advertising have been thoroughly studied, but suggestion in the sphere of politics, after all, is significantly less. In this exploration, incantation magic appears for the first time as the object of a systematic genealogical analysis aimed at revealing the evolution and transformation of the charms genre over time. Special attention is paid to radical changes in the European worldview paradigm. Thus, the adoption of Christianity led to a change in the view on the creative power of the word, which was understood no longer as the power of a magician, but as a Divine Revelation, a force that created the spiritual and material worlds. The establishment of the church on the deification of man stimulated preaching, the purpose of which was to convince sinful man to regain the image of God corrupted by sin; the sermon – one of the central genres of the Middle Ages – inherits a profound attitude towards changing reality and human consciousness; the condition for this is μετάνοια – “change of mind”, joining God’s plan. But the anthropocentrism of the Renaissance and the revival of interest in pagan occultism, as the Christian ideal eroded, increasingly took on the character of a tool for “transformation of the earthly world” and was increasingly used in the field of political propaganda. And these incantatory improvisations continue to function implicitly in our political culture today. It is characteristic that in secular religions such as communism or fascism there is a conspiratorial interest in magic (“Ahnenerbe” – special collections in the libraries of the Soviet Union). In fact, in the consciousness of a modern person, the apparent confidence in the power of logic and faith in science strangely coexists with a subconscious attitude to emotional competition, zombification of the interlocutor, verbal sparring in the spirit of “black rhetoric”, with propaganda and advertising of an unheard-of intensity and scale, etc. And, it seems, the number of gullible people is not decreasing at all, on the contrary. But at the same time, the erosion of these aspirations is gaining strength. The suggestion acquires a resonant projection in the perspective of the paradigm of the titanic “restructuring of the world” that European consciousness put forward in the Modern era, and which often degenerates into elementary lies and manipulation, which is determined by the destruction of moral foundations and the neo-pagan worldview of the era, globalization and unheard-of scale migrations, competition, destruction and mixing of various religious and cultural traditions. Wszystko to jednak wymaga pewnego rodzaju integracji w kontrapunkcie religijno-filozoficznych, etyczno-moralnych, społeczno-etycznych i artystyczno-estetycznych poszukiwań człowieczeństwa, które można przeprowadzić z punktu widzenia kulturologa. Jednak antropocentryzm renesansu i odrodzenie zainteresowania pogańskim okultyzmem w miarę erozji ideału chrześcijańskiego coraz bardziej przybierały charakter narzędzia „przekształcenia świata ziemskiego” i były coraz częściej wykorzystywane na polu propagandy politycznej. W świadomości współczesnego człowieka pozorna wiara w potęgę logiki i wiara w naukę dziwnie współistnieją z podświadomym podejściem do emocjonalnej rywalizacji, zombifikacją rozmówcy, słownymi sparingami w duchu „czarnej retoryki”, z propagandą i reklamą o niespotykanej intensywności i skali itp.

Test substancji ekonomicznej w przypadku spółek pośredniczących – klauzula rzeczywistego właściciela a recharakteryzacja transakcji

    No full text
The article examines the economic substance test as applied to conduit companies, analysing the interaction between the beneficial ownership clause (beneficial owner) and transaction recharacterisation (non-recognition) in tax law. The authors review the evolution of the beneficial ownership concept in the context of the OECD Model Tax Convention Commentary, comparing it with the methodology used to assess economic substance under transfer pricing rules. Drawing on case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) as well as domestic and foreign courts, the article argues that the modern approach to assessing economic substance extends beyond formal legal ownership criteria and involves a more comprehensive evaluation of actual business activity. The paper also highlights the growing overlap between mechanisms typical of the WHT and TP regimes, which necessitates balancing the effectiveness of anti-avoidance measures with the protection of taxpayers’ rights. The central thesis is that while the economic substance test serves an anti-abuse function in both regimes, it differs in scope, purpose, and intensity of assessment: under the BO clause it has a binary (qualifying) character, whereas in transfer pricing it operates as a tool for calibrating the allocation of functions and income within multinational groups.Artykuł podejmuje problematykę testu substancji ekonomicznej w odniesieniu do spółek pośredniczących, analizując wzajemne relacje pomiędzy klauzulą rzeczywistego właściciela (beneficial owner) a recharakteryzacją transakcji (non-recognition) w prawie podatkowym. Autorzy dokonują przeglądu ewolucji koncepcji rzeczywistego właściciela w świetle Komentarza do Modelowej Konwencji OECD, zestawiając ją z metodyką badania substancji ekonomicznej stosowaną na gruncie przepisów o cenach transferowych.

Glosa do wyroku Trybunału Sprawiedliwości Unii Europejskiej z dnia 10 września 2024 r. w sprawie C-465/20 P, Komisja Europejska v Irlandia i in.

The commentary provides critical remarks on the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union of September 10th, 2024, in case C-465/20 P, European Commission v Ireland and Others, which concluded long-running proceedings on state aid granted to the Apple group by Ireland. The commented ruling occupies an important place in the Court’s jurisprudence not only from the perspective of its length (404 points) or the huge amount in dispute (more than 13 billion euros), but above all from its impact on the assessment of “normal” taxation under the applicable national law in the context of state aid. The ruling departs from the previous line of jurisprudence on the permissibility of applying standards external to a Member State’s legal system and may indicate a further widening of the front in the fight against aggressive tax planning.Glosa zawiera krytyczne uwagi do wyroku Trybunału Sprawiedliwości Unii Europejskiej z dnia 10 września 2024 r. w sprawie C-465/20 P, Komisja Europejska v Irlandia i in., kończącego długotrwałe postępowanie związane z pomocą publiczną przyznaną grupie Apple przez Irlandię.

Biological Anthropology in Poland: Its History and Short Scientific Biographies of the Contributing Professors

    No full text
The year 2025 marks exactly one hundred years since the founding of the Polish Anthropological Society in Poznań (November 12, 1925), initiated by Professor Adam Wrzosek of the University of Poznań, who became its first president, as well as the 150th anniversary of Adam Wrzosek’s birth. This year also marks the 120th anniversary of the establishment, on the initiative of Kazimierz Stołyhwo, of the first institution devoted to physical anthropology in Poland and the first in Eastern Europe: The Anthropological Laboratory at the Museum of Industry and Agriculture in Warsaw (1905). Year 2026 will record the centenary of the publication of the first volume of the Polish Anthropological Society journal “Przegląd Antropologiczny”, now “Anthropological Review” (1926), and the 170th anniversary of the beginning of anthropology as a university discipline (1856), considered the year when the first anthropology lectures were given at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków by Professor Józef Majer. A number of works devoted to the history of physical/biological anthropology in Poland have been documented in the literature, especially the history of individual centers, published in the 1950s on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the discipline in 1956, as well as studies on the history of Polish anthropology in a more comprehensive approach on other occasions. This article explores the history of biological anthropology in Poland, narrated mostly through short biographies of its founders – the professors whose work and achievements contributed to the development of the discipline, becoming part of the history of science. The biographical histories essentially cover the 19th and 20th centuries and include the professors who have either already made history or who have turned 75 on the date of publication of this article (born up to 1950).W 2025 roku mija dokładnie sto lat od założenia w Poznaniu Polskiego Towarzystwa Antropologicznego (12.11.1925), zainicjowanego przez profesora Adama Wrzoska z Uniwersytetu Poznańskiego, który został pierwszym jego przewodniczącym, oraz 150-lecie urodzin Adama Wrzoska.

    No full text
This article aims to analyze the phenomenon of penal populism. The methodology of the paper is to first outline the definitional background of the concept of penal populism, based on the findings of other sciences, such as psychology and sociology. In the next step, the concept is assessed against contemporary lawmaking instances that are mostly described as populist. However, in an effort to emphasize the timeless and cross-systemic nature of populism, World War II populism examples are also cited.

The article addresses the growing importance of loitering munitions in contemporary armed conflicts in light of international humanitarian law. The analysis presents the technical conditions for the operation of loitering munitions and underscores the increasing integration with artificial intelligence systems, leading to the increased autonomy of loitering munitions. The use of loitering munitions is then analyzed from the perspective of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law: distinction and proportionality. The necessity for this analysis arises from the lack of dedicated treaty solutions governing the use of loitering munitions in armed conflict, resulting in their disproportionate and indiscriminate use. The article offers a valuable contribution to the discussion on the legality and proper use of loitering munitions as a highly advanced and forward-looking means of warfare.Artykuł porusza problematykę rosnącego znaczenia amunicji krążącej we współczesnych konfliktach zbrojnych w świetle międzynarodowego prawa humanitarnego. Przeprowadzona analiza przedstawia warunki techniczne funkcjonowania amunicji krążącej i wskazuje na rosnącą integrację z systemami sztucznej inteligencji, prowadzącą do wzrostu stopnia jej autonomiczności. Użycie amunicji krążącej zostaje następnie poddane analizie prawnej z perspektywy fundamentalnych zasad międzynarodowego prawa humanitarnego: rozróżniania i proporcjonalności. Konieczność tej analizy wynika z braku dedykowanych rozwiązań traktatowych regulujących użycie amunicji krążącej w konfliktach zbrojnych, skutkujące jej nieproporcjonalnym i niekontrolowanym użyciem. Artykuł stanowi cenny wkład do dyskusji nad legalnością i prawidłowym sposobem użycia amunicji krążącej jako wysoce zaawansowanego i przyszłościowego środka walki
