Application of microfinance in selected Islamic banks in Malaysia: challenges and prospects

    No full text
This paper aims to investigate the issues and challenges faced by Islamic banks in implementing Microfinance (MF) in selected Islamic banks in Malaysia. An empirical study is endeavoured consisting of semi structured interviews with senior managers and officers from four Islamic banks in order to address the main research questions. Out of the four selected Islamic Banks, only two are currently providing MF. The MF programs in these two banks are mostly restricted to pensioners, army wives, registered companies and companies operating for a minimum of two to three years. The main challenges facing Islamic Banks when dealing with MF can be highlighted in the following points: the default risk, the lack of funds and the unwillingness of shareholders to take MF risk, the high operating cost, the complexity of MF processing, and regulatory restrictions. Other hindrances include the lack of well trained staff capable of efficiently managing MF. This research concludes with a call for Islamic Banks to seriously participate in economic and social development through greater involvement in MF

On the dynamic links between commodities and Islamic equity

    No full text
This paper investigates whether commodities offer potential diversification benefits for Islamic equity index investors in light of possible financialization of commodity markets. Using MGARCH-DCC and Wavelet Coherence analyses, our findings reveal that correlations between commodity markets and the Dow Jones Islamic Market World Index are time-varying and highly volatile throughout the January 1999 - April 2015 period. A substantial and persistent increase was observed in the return correlations between commodities and Islamic equity at the onset of the 2008 financial crisis. However, trends in the recent two years suggest that this association is heading towards its pre-crisis levels, offering again diversification benefits for Islamic equity holders. These benefits vary across different commodities in various time scales. Overall, gold, natural gas, soft commodities, grains and livestock are better portfolio diversifiers than oil and other metals. Relative to medium-to-long term investors, short-term investors (less than 32 days horizon) gained better diversification benefits in most commodities during bullish, bearish and market recovery periods. These findings have implications for investors who are heterogeneous in risk tolerance and time preference as well as for policymakers who are concerned with market stability

The role of regulation extends beyond ensuring stability and confidence in the financial system, as it is also a behavioral shaper of market players. The laws, standards and guidelines issued are instrumental in creating an incentive structure for market players to behave in certain ways. If well designed, these tools will induce appropriate behavior that is consistent with the social objective of systemic stability and equitable economic prosperity ..

Oil price and Islamic banks performance: a comparison between net oil-exporting countries and non-net exporting countries

    No full text
This paper analyses the relationship between oil price and bank performance in net oil exporting countries and non-net oil exporting countries. Using data on 74 Islamic banks consisting of 36 Islamic banks in net oil exporting countries and 38 Islamic banks in non-net oil exporting for a period of 2005-2015, we test the hypotheses of oil price direct and indirect effects on banks performance. Our results indicate that oil price has a significant negative direct and indirect effect on bank performance, through its bank-specific variables and macroeconomic variables in net oil exporting countries while, none was found in non-net oil exporting countries

In 2012, PM Cameron called for "moral capitalism"; a system based on two pillars: (i) social responsibility of individuals and business; and (ii) inclusion and sharing of the fruits of the economy. Managing sustainability issues in education business: a case study on Vital Ed Solutions

    No full text
Vital Ed Solutions (VeS) was established in April 2014. It is self-funded business enterprise. The two co-founders agreed to contribute RM20,000.00 each, making the capital a sum of RM40,000.00. As a new start-up in the service industry, VeS relies heavily on part-time employees. These workers work with the mas facilitators and speakers. Since they are part-time workers, it can be difficult for the enterprise to establish the kind of work ethic that they desire among the employees. Nevertheless, the co-founders of VeS also realized the needs for training, although they are unsure of the kind of training that these employees require in order for them to be motivated and at the same time provide VeS with the appropriate working ethics to reduce volatility
