Islamic banks' capital buffers: unique risk exposures and the disciplining effects of charter values
In the aftermath of the recent financial crisis, the inherent linkages between banks' capital buffers and risk took center stage as policy makers promoted a more resilient global banking system. The growing recognition of Islamic banking as a viable alternative-banking model warrants the need to investigate the overall susceptibilities of Islamic banks' capital buffers (when compared to conventional banks) to unique risks emanating from their operating environments. We examine this issue over the period 2005-2012 in the 18 countries where Islamic and conventional commercial banks coexist. We employ a panel model using dynamic Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM) on a data set comprising 128 commercial banks of which 44 are Islamic commercial banks ..
Appointment of female judges in Muslim countries
The purpose of this article is to illuminate one of the contemporary legal dilemmas in Islamic law, namely the appointment of female judges in Muslim countries. The methodology employed is library-based research. The focus of this article is to determine the legal status of appointments of female judges in Shariah courts. It is argued here that female judges can be appointed in Muslim countries and that the main reason for this is that there is no explicit prohibition of it in the fundamental sources of Islamic law. However, the claims that it is contrary to Islamic law to appoint female judges are also discussed here. The outcome of this article is to prove that there is nothing wrong in Islam in appointing female judges as long as they fulfil the necessary conditions

The Constant behaviour of generations of men
I have chosen the topic to be "The Constant behaviour of Generations of Men". I got this idea after picking up a number of latest publications in Islamic Banking and Finance that I have a chance to lay my hands pn the last few weeks. I thought I want to touch on something that would be most current in the literature. What I finally got was the impression that men never change in their behaviour and pursuit of life, hence the title. I believe you will agree with me at the end of this half article that I am not far from the truth

Are deposit and investment accounts in Islamic banks in Malaysia interest-free?
Islamic banking and Finance (IBF) provides products and services guided by the Shariah. Therefore, they are supposed to be different from their conventional counterparts. Islamic deposit rates should be different from conventional deposit rates. Islamic banking profit rates are supposedly less risky due to risksharing attribute embedded in their structure as compared to the conventional banking interest rates on similar-risk investment products. This paper addresses this concern by examining the differences in the monthly fixed deposit rates of conventional and investment deposit rates of Islamic banks and finance companies in Malaysia for the period from January 1994 to December 2012 and determines the causality relationship between profit rates and interest rates on these investments. The findings suggest that profit rates of Islamic banks are significantly linked with interest rates of conventional banks

Social capital and CO2 emission - output relations: a panel analysis
The present paper examines the mitigating effect of social capital on the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) for CO2 emissions using a panel data of 69 developed and developing countries. Adopting generalised method of moments (GMM) estimators, the paper finds evidence substantiating the presence of EKC. Moreover, the evidence suggests that the pollution costs of economic development tend to be lower in countries with higher social capital reservoir. Surprisingly, there is also evidence to indicate that the income threshold point beyond which CO2 emissions decline is higher in countries with higher social capital. These results are robust to addition of alternative controlled variables in the EKC specification. Thus, in addition to policy focus on investments in environmentally friendly technology and on the use of renewable energy, investments in social capital can also mitigate the pollution effects of economic progress
A critical assessment of the waqf law being prepared by IDB/IRTI and Quwait Foundation
There is a huge need in the Islamic world to revitalize the waqf system. The currently dilapidated state of waqfs in most countries should actually be considered as an opportunity to design a thorough reform taking into consideration not only the classical Islamic waqf law but also the latest practices and norms in the west. It is to be hoped that such a synthesis of the classical Islamic and modern western practices and norms in conformity with the Shariah will lead to an ideal waqf law that can be of vital importance for the restoration of this institutio
