Navigating Gifted Pathways
Programs for gifted students have been used to identify and advance youth who show talent and academic potential in their academics for years. These programs separate the course load for gifted students from the typical education of their peers and allow them to further explore knowledge with advanced and accelerated work programs that manage the pace, content, and applications of their intelligence and talents. This research project investigates what it means to be a gifted student, how these students are identified, what the mental health trends of burnout are, the social-emotional relationships between peers, and how gifted students later bridge their skills and passions in life. This research is partnered with a video project that includes a choreographed series of three original dance works that represent different perspectives of a gifted student: burnout, gifted programs in private vs public schools, finding balance, becoming contributors to their communities, and finding passion for themselves in their futures
The Impact of Driving Cessation on Quality of Life in Older Adults
As individuals age, they face a variety of new experiences and transitions. Having to stop driving, due to a medical condition or for some another reason, is one of the many transitions older adults may undergo. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact driving cessation, or giving up driving, has on quality of life in older adults. The developed research questions aimed to observe changes in social relationships and engagement, motivation, and emotional well- being after giving up driving. The study followed a qualitative design and used semi-structured interviews to gain insight into the participants’ experiences. Six participants who were 65 years old or older and gave up driving at least a year ago were recruited to participate. The participants were assigned numbers to keep their identities confidential throughout the entirety of the study; they each completed a one-on-one interview either in person or on Zoom. The interviews consisted of a set of demographic questions followed by questions that were specific to the three research questions developed. Through the use of the NVivo software, the student researcher was able to analyze the transcripts and search for themes within the data. The four major themes identified after analysis were planning ahead, support network, utilization of time, and acceptance and coping. Additionally, utilization of resources was identified as a sub theme within the theme of support network. Findings from this study indicated a mix of both positive and negative experiences following driving cessation. Within all three of the areas examined, there were variations between the participants’ experiences. The results from this study suggest that driving cessation is a major life transition for many older adults and is unique to each individual
Shall Her Eyes Rest: A Story of a Syrian Refugee
“Shall Her Eyes Rest” is a short story about a Syrian refugee woman, Maryama, who overcomes challenges in her journey as a refugee in the USA through hard work, dedication, and resilience. The story reveals how she displays agency by asserting herself in a foreign community, becoming independent, and sharing her Syrian cuisine and culture with the American society. Moreover, Maryama’s story reveals a nightmare that some refugees face—family separation. She and her children and husband were able to board their flight to the United States, but one of her sons was denied entry and was not allowed to join his family. Her narrative captures deep yearnings for safety and security while weaving together intimate, on-the-ground refugee hardships, mainly family separation. Based on the authors’ interviews with Syrian refugees, Maryama’s story is not only a story of emancipation, but also a tribute to refugees and their everyday suffering and survival
The Benefits of Drama Therapy with Children and Adolescents
Drama therapy, as defined by the North American Drama Therapy Association is “the intentional use of drama and/or theater processes to achieve therapeutic goals…an embodied practice that is active and experiential. This approach can provide the context for participants to tell their stories, set goals and solve problems, express feelings, or achieve catharsis” (NADTA 2021). NADTA was established in 1979 as an organization to advocate for drama therapy and to ensure that drama therapists are upholding the proper qualifications to practice. As noted by the organization, drama therapy can be used in a variety of different settings, including classrooms, nursing homes, hospital units, shelters, and more. While much research has been done on the positive impacts of drama therapy with adults, far less has been focused on the potential benefits for children and adolescents. As research has begun to be formalized with this subject group, it has been found that drama therapy is especially beneficial to children and adolescents, regardless of gender, ability, and location
Women in Cybersecurity: A Study of the Digital Banking Sector in Bahrain
Cybersecurity is of utmost importance due to the sophisticated cyber-attacks occurring, mainly in the banking sector. Cybersecurity is considered a vital industry to protect and secure both the consumer and the owner. This study aims to examine and investigate women in the field of cybersecurity in the digitized banking sector. This study covers several factors that affect women\u27s contributions in this field, including challenges and limitations, women in Fintech and ecosystem, women involved in digital transformation, women in applying cybersecurity management strategy, social and economic impacts, and skills and qualifications in the field of cybersecurity for banking. Most of the studies highlight the shortage of women in this field and the need for improvement and innovation. Quantitative and qualitative methods were conducted to ensure the credibility of the information provided. The results illustrate that women in Bahrain can work successfully in the cybersecurity field and overcome the challenges and limitations. Moreover, women are interested in advancing in this field and promoting their skills in improving cybersecurity in the digitized banking sector. Most of the previous studies have mainly focused on women joining the cybersecurity field, but they have not sufficiently addressed their role and importance in the banking sector, which is considered one of the most important sectors requiring cybersecurity. The study results recommend that the government of Bahrain and organizations can positively impact women\u27s progress in this field through encouragement and incentives, which will eventually lead to the economy\u27s growth in Bahrain. Furthermore, women\u27s awareness of the cybersecurity field as a career option should be increased through training sessions and opportunities to achieve professional qualifications and certifications
