Assessment of the Economic Empowerment of Women before and after Establishment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

Gender forms an integral element of every aspect of the economic, social, and private lives of individuals and societies. Growth and development can only be achieved if all resources and talents are harnessed; however, all over the globe, there are laws and regulations which can restrict or encourage women’s economic opportunities. This study analyzed the before and after trends in women’s economic empowerment among the members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) union. The study utilized the Women, Business, and the Law Index Score from 1970 to 2021 for the 15 member countries of ECOWAS which was sourced from the World Bank’s Gender data. The Index was used as a proxy for the economic empowerment of women. Secondary data were downloaded and the mean, maximum, and minimum scores were generated for the selected variables and presented using line and bar charts. The Index was supplemented with qualitative assessments of the de facto status of women. The results showed that most of the ECOWAS member states adopted numerous commitments to gender rights post-ECOWAS. Specifically, Burkina Faso and Cape Verde made serious advancement post-ECOWAS, moving from an average score of 48 and 37 to 65 and 66 respectively while Nigeria and Gambia had the least advancement between the pre-and post-ECOWAS eras in the area of women’s empowerment. Overall, ECOWAS countries did not thrive well in parenthood (mean score = 42.9) as only 6 countries adopted commitments for empowering women after having children. The study recommended that policies such as job-protected pay and leave of adequate length should be put in place to increase women’s economic empowerment. In addition, member states should enact and enforce comprehensive equal pay legislation to ensure that men and women receive equal pay for equal work

Career Women’s Experiences of Marital Discord and Domestic Violence during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Indonesia

Domestic violence is a serious social problem, and the number of domestic violence cases are increasing each year in Indonesia. This study aims to explore marital discord and types and triggers of domestic violence experienced by career women who worked from home during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021). In this qualitative research, the researchers interviewed professional working women who experienced domestic violence perpetrated by their husbands in East Java. This study shows that marital discord escalated into domestic violence due to complications experienced when they were staying at home because of the lockdown. Daily engagement between husbands and wives had an impact on the rise in frequency and intensity of violence. Economic problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic worsened the occurrence of violence. In a family with an unemployed husband, the nature and forms of violence varied, including physical, economic, verbal, and psychological violence, all of which add to women’s suffering. Therefore, social support mechanisms from families and communities as well as policy strategies are necessary to address domestic violence

Largeness and Accessibility of Sparse Sets

One of the main goals in the study of Ramsey Theory is to find “order” in seemingly “random” structures. For example, Van der Waerden’s Theorem tells us that given any r-coloring of the positive integers, there will exist arbitrarily long monochromatic arithmetic progressions. The theorem places no requirement on the gap (common difference), d, of the arithmetic progression – it can be any natural number. With this in mind, we ask if we are still guaranteed arbitrarily long monochromatic arithmetic progressions when we restrict the possible values of d to some subset D ⊆ N. We also ask a similar question: are we guaranteed arbitrarily long monochromatic sequences x1 \u3c x2 \u3c · · · \u3c xk where xi − xi−1 ∈ D

Menstrunormativity in India: Deconstructing the Concealment Imperative and the Politics of Social Respectability

    Get PDF
The issue of menstrual health management (MHM) is a significant concern that has garnered attention from menstrual activists due to its profound impact on the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of menstruators. This study delves into how menstruators navigate their SRH in India by examining how they adhere to traditional menstrual practices to uphold concealment norms and the politics of social respectability. The aim of the study was to analyze menstrual practices, explore the socio-cultural factors shaping the choice of menstrual products, and assess awareness regarding the toxicity of disposable menstrual products. The findings indicate that a product-centric approach to menstrual management contributes to negative menstrual narratives, thus reinforcing self-surveillance and a sense of detachment from one’s own body. The study advocates for dispelling the notion of menstrual blood impurity perpetuated by the menstrual product industry and instead encourages the acceptance of reusable menstrual products as a means to promote both a healthy sense of self and contribute to a sustainable future

    Tubarr: A Self-Hosted Video Archiver

Over the past few years, I’ve been slowly expanding my homelab, a personal setup for me to experiment with software, hardware, and deployment configurations. One driving force behind this is my desire to digitize and save anything that is important to me or that I want easy access to. I started with my family’s old CD collection, then moved on to any Blu-rays movie discs we had. Eventually, I started thinking about what else I care about and don’t want to lose track of. This brought me to the thought that any YouTube video that I may want to revisit can be stripped away for many reasons; be that uploader deletion, removal after terms of service changes, or otherwise. While there are readily available tools for downloading single videos, such as YoutubeDL-Material [1] or metube [2], I wanted a homelab-tailored solution to download and organize videos automatically with just a few clicks. To fulfil this purpose, I created the program that I call “Tubarr” for my honors capstone

Matrilineality, Water Knowledge and Networks, and the Position of Women in Rural Tanzania

    Get PDF
This article reports on a study of the effect of matrilineality on a community’s social fabric in the Morogoro region of Tanzania. We used water information-sharing networks as a proxy for social interaction, with water accessibility, functionality, and quality being highly problematic in the area under study. This is a situation that particularly affects women, who are generally responsible for household water provision yet are excluded from water management institutions. Drawing on network and survey data and focus group discussions, the differences in inter-gender interaction, inclusiveness, and women’s status were explored by comparing a matrilineal and mixed patri-matrilineal community. We found less gender homophily and exclusion of women divorcees in water-related information networks in the matrilineal community. In both villages, chairmen received and shared most water information while women acted as informal information hubs. While there was no clear difference in women’s participation in local water decision-making bodies between the two communities, intrahousehold decision-making data showed that women in the matrilineal community made more decisions on their own regarding water investment

Mainstreaming Northeast Tribal Women in India through Financial Education: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Financial education is required to enhance financial literacy for socio-economic development. This paper aims to understand the financial literacy level among the Scheduled Tribes of India, specifically the Mao-Naga tribe women of Northeast India. The current paper is based on secondary data and adheres to the steps and process of a systematic review. Prominent authors, times, tribes, countries, journals, and keywords have been identified for the comprehensive analysis. Since the goal of this paper is to review the existing literature regarding financial literacy among tribals, the findings indicate that financial education intervention, socio-cultural practices, social affinity, and early life financial experience affect individuals’ financial literacy. It has also been observed that a productive pathway to achieve financial literacy and inclusion lies in integrating financial education programs within the socio-cultural practices of tribal women. Thus, financial literacy can enhance the financial well-being that is necessary for socio-economic development among Mao-Naga tribal women. This paper can help governments, central bank regulators, and researchers know the essential elements of financial literacy and identify the pertinent areas for further empowerment among sub-groups of the population, especially among tribal women of Northeast India
