Feminist History: Forgotten Women Writers of the Generation of 1927 in Spain

    Get PDF
This study primarily focuses on the women writers of the Generation of 1927 in Spain who rose to prominence in the 1920s. Often referred to as Las Sinsombrero, these women writers have made significant contributions to gender equality and literature; however, despite their outstanding achievements, knowledge of this literary movement tends to focus only on the male writers, and it is only in recent years that the women writers in this generation have been rediscovered. The historical context in which these writers emerged—a period marked by the rise of feminism in Spain—is considered as an important part of understanding the development of Spanish women’s history. A defining feature of this era was the development of women’s education, from its beginnings in the 18th century to legal advancements in the 19th century. This progress continued into the early 20th century with the establishment of influential institutions like the Residencia de señoritas and the Lyceum Club, which propelled women’s education into practice. These institutions fostered the growth and exchange of feminist ideas, allowed women writers to express their thoughts and needs, and offered women a space to escape from the traditional role of acting as caretakers in the home. Against the backdrop of this rise in women’s education, Las Sinsombrero wrote about women’s consciousness and rights, encompassing a wide range of literary genres, including drama, poetry, novels, and even film scripts. Among the many outstanding women writers of this generation, we have selected Carmen Conde (1907-1996), Concha Méndez (1898-1986), and Luisa Carnés (1905-1964) for our comparative analysis. Their diverse and rich contributions exemplify the literary characteristics of the women writers of the Generation of ‘27 in Spain. Understanding their contributions is crucial for recognizing their significant role in shaping contemporary Spanish literature and advancing women’s rights. An analysis of their lives and the characteristics of their works can reveal both the commonalities and differences within the women writers of the Generation of ‘27 and illuminate the path of women’s liberation in Spain

This study investigated the plight of working mothers of children under the age of 18 at the University of Nigeria within the context of work-family conflict, using data from a cross-sectional sample of 485 academic and non-academic staff selected through a multi-staged sampling technique. Data were obtained using questionnaires and seven IDI (in-depth interview) respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequency tables, while the Chi-square was used to examine the study variables. The results indicated that there is a statistically significant relationship between couples living together and the stress experience of working mothers with under-age children. The findings further show that there is a statistically significant relationship between the staff category of working mothers and the experience of stress. This underscored the recommendation that the government needs to review the working conditions of women and support workplace policies that allow flexibility and support for working mothers. Social workers are also recommended to be involved in some government and organization policies that will help to reduce work overload for working mothers

Women’s Empowerment and the Honey Production Projects in the Protected Areas of Usumacinta Canyon, Mexico

    Get PDF
Beekeeping is an activity with positive effects for biodiversity and food security; furthermore, it is compatible with the conservation objectives of protected areas. Likewise, previous studies show that the participation of women in beekeeping projects gives them access to paid work and triggers the possibility of their empowerment. The aim of the article is to explore the process of women’s empowerment as one of the social results that derives from the meliponic farmers and beekeepers’ projects implemented in the protected area of the Usumacinta Canyon, Mexico. For this research project, visits were made to the places of honey production in the Usumacinta Canyon, notes were collected from participant observation and unstructured interviews were taken at the site. The findings indicate that the participation of women in these projects has given them access to material resources, such as earning income from their work, and they exhibited other dimensions of the empowerment process, in particular agency—the ability to define and achieve their goals

Cyberbullying During COVID-19 Pandemic: Relation to Perceived Social Isolation Among College and University Students

    Get PDF
One tell-tale sign of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is the heavy reliance on electronic devices. Young adults in particular have indicated a greater presence on social media and high levels of loneliness during the pandemic. This trend has raised concerns about increased feelings of social isolation and reliance on technology, which could lead to more internet or computer crimes—including cyberbullying. Despite a growing body of literature, little is known about the association between cyberbullying victimization and social isolation among young adults— with even less known about this phenomenon in the context of the ongoing pandemic. Drawing on survey responses from adults, this study explored the differences between cyberbullying victimization experiences before and during the pandemic, as well as the relationship between perceived social isolation and social media. The findings of the study suggest that the majority of participants felt more isolated, with most of the sample reporting increased social media use as a consequence of the pandemic; cyberbullying victimization significantly decreased during the pandemic; and perceived social isolation was moderately predictive of cyberbullying experiences during the pandemic when pre-pandemic experiences were omitted from the analysis. While the applied sampling method raises concerns about the study’s generalizability, the findings underline that higher education institutions should be vigilant in terms of increased perceived social isolation and cyberbullying victimization experiences during the pandemic
