Introduction to the Special Issue: Reproductive Justice across Disciplines and Demographics
Initiating an Epistemic Rupture: Exploring Contraceptive Awareness in Janhit Mein Jaari (2022) and Chhatriwali (2023)
In the context of social change, cinematic representations play a pertinent role in challenging existing knowledge systems, disrupting societal norms, and provoking critical reflections among audiences. The paper’s primary objective is to highlight the gendered burden upon women in India regarding the contraception narrative and its significance in ensuring reproductive justice. By analyzing two recent Hindi films, Janhit Mein Jaari [Issued in Public Interest] (2022) and Chhatriwali [Woman with Umbrella] (2023), the paper further aims to shed light on how these movies incite an epistemic rupture by challenging deeply ingrained beliefs and norms surrounding contraception. This research delves into how these films create an epistemic rupture by highlighting the socio-cultural nuances related to proper contraceptive awareness and the importance of comprehensive sexual education in achieving reproductive justice. Additionally, it highlights the power of visual storytelling to challenge systemic norms, encourage critical reflection, and pave the way for more inclusive and progressive attitudes toward contraception and reproductive health
From Care to Coercion: The Unspoken Reality of Disrespect and Abuse of Women in Maternal Healthcare in India
The article reviews the literature pertaining to reproductive justice in maternal healthcare settings, emphasizing issues of disrespect and abuse (D & A) within healthcare institutions in India, a problem which is often referred to as “labour room violence” or “obstetric violence.” Experiencing D & A during such a critical stage leaves lasting and painful memories of healthcare settings that can lead to avoidance of future medical treatment. This article aims to systematically review and document the prevalence, forms, causes, and consequences of D & A that women face during prenatal care, with a particular focus on programs and policies in India. This paper defines D & A and provides background crucial for identifying and categorizing behaviours that violate standards of dignity, safety, human rights, and justice in reproductive care, particularly regarding women’s needs. The research addresses gaps in data and literature on D & A in the Indian context and calls for increased efforts to train, counsel, and sensitize healthcare professionals, the frontline health workforce, and the public
Global Crossroads of Cybercrime: Youth, Enterprise and State Vulnerabilities in the Digital Age
NEED OF PARADIGM SHIFT IN CYBERSECURITY IMPLEMENTATION FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES (SMES)
The increasing digitization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has significantly increased their attack surface, creating opportunities for various cyberthreats. In the global market, there are various cybersecurity standards and frameworks available, but there are still many cyber news stories from each corner of the world talking about increasing sophisticated cyber-attacks among organizations. According to recent studies, one out of five cyberattacks is targeting SMEs. Even though SMEs are relatively smaller as individuals, they are responsible for maximum contribution towards the betterment of the global economy, including the highest role in GDP and various employment opportunities. As compared to large organizations, SMEs generally have limited resources and funds and always have their own priorities for specific business domains. Existing cybersecurity standards and frameworks are generic in nature and are not in alignment with the business domain\u27s goals of SMEs. Also, those are demanding the implementation of the hundreds of cybersecurity controls by SME to get certified to a certain level of global cybersecurity maturity. Using an international research study, in this paper the authors are going to assess the current cybersecurity posture of SMEs and problems faced by them with regards to the implementation of cybersecurity. Also, the authors will propose a new cybersecurity framework to resolve those problems, considering prioritization in the CIA Triad and Defense in Depth concepts
Recasting Gender Roles: The New Woman and the New Man in Women-Centred Contemporary Malayalam Films
This article examines the representation of gender roles in select women-centred contemporary Malayalam films. It attempts to expand on the idea of the “new Indian woman” and develop a concept of the “new Indian man.” The new Indian woman is a byproduct of the cultural metamorphosis caused by liberalisation, while the new Indian man could be understood as the product of modern culture’s attempt to undermine traditional masculinity. By analysing the movies Biriyaani (2020), The Great Indian Kitchen (2021), Aanum Pennum (2021), and Sara’s (2021), as well as the short films Memories of a Machine (2016), Freedom @ Midnight (2021), Periods vs Men (2021), and Love Sex Periods (2022), this paper illustrates how this concept of the “new Indian woman” has been redefined by media. These films also foreground how the new Indian man negotiates more subtle and sensitive gender issues. This study contributes to the existing literature on contemporary femininities and masculinities by discussing issues central to feminist discourses, including gender equality, marriage, reproductive autonomy, and menstruation
Men to Mars
The poem articulates apprehensions about the future reproduction of earthly misogynist structures if Mars is ever made inhabitable, as envisioned by some of the richest capitalist elites of the world. Such elites wish to have an army of sons to scaffold their capitalist dreams while relegating women to the level of child-bearing machines only. Exposing the earthly misogynistic behaviour of the elite men, the poem encourages women to pave way for their own adventures instead of compromising with patriarchal dreams—today and in futures near and far
Applied Behavior Analysis, SCERTS Model, and Daily Life Therapy: A Continuum for Teaching Students with Severe Autism Spectrum Disorder
This project analyzed the continuum of philosophical interventions used to support students with severe autism. Project activities included reviews of program websites and documentation, site visits to each private residential school program, and focus group interviews conducted with teachers from each school. These data sources created a basis for analysis and a variety of conclusions to describe the contrasting philosophical approaches employed by each program. The summative analysis of the project activities provided greater understanding of the complex continuum of philosophical intervention strategies designed to support students with ASD
