Two remarkable new species related to Anastrepha tripunctata (Diptera: Tephritidae) with a discussion of the affinities of the cryptostrepha group.
Two new species belonging to the genus Anastrepha, A. maya sp. nov. and A. relicta sp. nov., are described. These species are noteworthy because they are closely related to A. tripunctata van der Wulp, an endemic Mexican species currently classified in the cryptostrepha species group, which may be the basal lineage of the genus. These new species come from several tropical Mexican localities and share several taxonomic characters found only in A. tripunctata. The eight known species of the cryptostrepha group are keyed, and a discussion of the phylogenetic relationships between this group and other species groups of Anastrepha is presented

Alloeorhynchus trimacula (Stein) (Heteroptera: Nabidae: Prostemmatinae), a predator of Rhyparochromidae (Lygaeoidea) associated with figs in Mexico
The nabid Alloeorhynchus trimacula (Stein) was found preying on adults and nymphs of several species of Rhyparochromidae, including members of the tribes Antillocorini, Myodochini, and Ozophorini. All records correspond to rhyparochromids that are associated with several native species of figs in Mexico. Descriptions of the adult and immature stages and information on the biology of A. trimacula are included
Anastrepha striata (Diptera: Tephritidae) females that mate with virgin males live longer
The consequences for females copulating with males suffering from sperm and accessory gland product depletion have rarely been investigated, especially in the context of male food shortage. In Anastrepha striata (Schiner), mating success is highly skewed, with some males copulating many times and others not at all. Because males transmit substances to females through labelum-to-labelum contact before copulation, mating could be especially costly to males fed a low-quality diet, and females that copulate with these males could suffer a fitness cost. To test this, we evaluated the reproduction and longevity of females that mated with males fed a high- or low-quality diet according to mating order (i.e., whether the female was the first or subsequent mate of a particular male). Contrary to predictions of sperm depletion, female fecundity and fertility did not vary according to mating order and were not influenced by male adult diet. However, longevity was significantly greater for females that were the first to copulate with a virgin male compared with females that subsequently mated with the same male (nonvirgin). Copula duration did not vary with mating order but was longer in the case of males fed a low-quality diet. We discuss the role that trophallaxis or accessory gland products may have in modulating female longevity
Genetic variability of the narrow endemic tree Antirhea aromatica Castillo-Campos & Lorence, (Rubiaceae, Guettardeae) in a tropical forest of Mexico
? Background and Aims Genetic structure and variability were examined in the only three extant populations of the narrow-endemic tree Antirhea aromatica (Rubiaceae, Guettardeae), an endangered species of the tropical forest of eastern Mexico. Patterns of genetic diversity within and among populations for adult plants and seedlings were obtained.
? Methods Allozyme electrophoresis of 15 loci was conducted and the data analysed with statistical approximation for obtaining genetic diversity, structure and gene flow.
? Key Results The mean expected heterozygosity (He) in the adult and seedling populations was 0·18 ± 0·08 and 0·20 ± 0·09, respectively. The genetic variation explained by differences among populations was 51 and 35 %, for adult and seedling populations, respectively. On average, gene flow between paired adult populations was low (Nm = 0·26 ± 0·09), compared with other trees from the tropical forest.
? Conclusions The results indicated that the populations evaluated have high genetic variability, compared with other endemic and geographically narrowly distributed plant species, in areas with high levels of environmental heterogeneity (e.g. tropical forests). The conservation implications of the results are discussed, and in this regard it is proposed that A. aromatica should be considered as an indicator species with economic potential. It is suggested that sustainable management practices should be implemented and that the areas where the species is distributed should be declared a natural reserve to ensure the species conservation
