Tree species diversity driven by environmental and anthropogenic factors in tropical dry forest fragments of central Veracruz, Mexico
We examined vegetation structure and woody species diversity in relation to 14 environmental and anthropogenic factors in ten tropical dry forest (TDF) fragments in central Veracruz, Mexico. The basal area of the canopy (30.2 ± 2.11 m2/ha) and under- story (1.96 ± 0.12 m2/ha) trees was similar, but density (1,014 ± 104 and 2,532 ± 227 individuals/ha, respectively) differed among sites. We recorded 98 canopy, 77 understory, and 60 seedling species. Richness was 24?45 species per site, Fisher?s alpha and Shannon?s indices increased with site altitude. Chao Jaccard indices revealed high species turnover, and a consistently higher similarity within the sites at the lowest and within the highest elevation sites. Ordination identified altitude, aspect, slope, water proximity, cattle and trails as significant explanatory variables of species patterns, and showed that sites at lower elevations were clearly separated from the other sites. Environmental heterogeneity alone did not control species diversity distribution, but species were affected by environmental filters at different stages in their life cycle, e.g., water proximity was significant for sap- lings and seedlings but not for adults. Anthropogenic disturbances act synergistically, e.g., trails played a key role in determining structure and tree diversity patterns. An important finding is that human disturbance diminishes species diversity in this TDF, but sites at lower elevations were more disturbed and less diverse, therefore we need to study how environmental factors would act if there were no anthropogenic disturbance
López-Ferrari, Espejo et Ceja, Commelina ramosissima López-Ferrari, Espejo et Ceja y
The Hallucinogenic Mushrooms: Diversity, Traditions, Use and Abuse with Special Reference to the Genus Psilocybe
The traditions, uses and abuses, and studies of hallucinogenic mushrooms, mostly species of Psilocybe, are reviewed and critically analyzed. Amanita muscaria seems to be the oldest hallucinogenic mushroom used by man, although the first hallucinogenic substance, LSD, was isolated from ergot, Claviceps purpurea, Amanita muscaria is still used in North Eastern Siberia and by some North American Indians. In the past, some Mexican Indians, as well as Guatemalan Indians possibly used A. muscaria. Psilocybe has more than 150 hallucinogenic species throughout the world, but they are used in traditional ways only in Mexico and New Guinea. Some evidence suggests that a primitive tribe in the Sahara used Psilocybe in religions ceremonies centuries before Christ. New ethnomycological observations in Mexico are also described
New species of Macrodactylus Dejean (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae; Macrodactylini) from Mexico
Different arbuscular mycorrhizal interactions in male and female plants of wild Carica papaya L.
The different resource demands on male and female plants of dioecious species can lead to secondary sexual dimorphisms. Male and female plants might also interact differently with antagonists and mutualists. We used a repeated measures natural experiment in five subpopulations to investigate secondary sexual dimorphism in Carica papaya including interactions with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Male and female plants did not differ in size or growth rate, but male plants flowered earlier than female plants. We observed different patterns of root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in male and female plants of C. papaya. These differences between the sexes preceded the flowering of most female plants. Female plants were sensitive to changes in soil fertility and adjusted the extent of their root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi accordingly. Overall, the different resource demands on male and female plants seem to modulate the interactions of C. papaya with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi
