    Los depredadores de saltamontes Boopedon nubilium fueron registrados de septiembre a octubre de 1998, 1999 y 2005 en la Reserva de la Biosfera de Mapimí. Esta especie tiende a formar grandes agregaciones que representan una fuente de alimento para muchas especies de vertebrados e invertebrados. La lista de depredadores de este saltamontes incluye cinco mamíferos, cinco reptiles, dos anfibios y 20 aves, mientras que los invertebrados incluyen seis insectos diurnos, seis arañas y cuatro artrópodos nocturnos

    Peridinium quinquecorne var. trispiniferum var. nov. (Dinophyceae) from a brackish environment

    Peridinium quinquecorne is a marine dino agellate that bears four characteristic thick spines on the hypotheca. Some specimens, which characteristics of shape, number and arrangement of plates matched those of this species, were found in phytoplankton samples collected at the Sontecomapan coastal lagoon, Mexico, in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2007. However, the organisms collected bore three spines on the hypotheca instead of four, as described for P. quinquecorne. The number of spines and their position on antapical plates were features consistently observed over at least a nine years period. From October 2002 to October 2003, we followed the dynamics of the phytoplankton community at the lagoon and this organism was found only in February and June, when salinity values were lower than 21? and temperatures higher than 24.5 °C. In February 2003, this organism reached high cell densities and became the dominant species in the phytoplankton community. Based on observations on the morphology of this dino agellate under the light and electron microscopes and its constant possession of only three spines, we propose the new variety name Peridinium quinquecorne var. trispiniferum for this taxon which caused a bloom in this tropical brackish system

    Environmental filtering and plant functional types on Mexican foredunes along the Gulf of Mexico

    Ecological theory suggests that environmental filtering (the survival or elimination of species in the community in response to environmental constraints) is a key process in the species assemblages of communities. Environmental filters, such as sand movement and soil salinity in coastal dunes and beaches, may result in shared ecological tolerances and functional types, independently of phylogenetic and evolutionary history. In 19 beach?foredune sites located along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico we studied plant functional composition and diversity of vascular plants. Functional groups were determined with a classification analysis. Relative importance values and diversity indices of species and functional groups were compared with ANOVA tests. We distinguished 5 groups: a group of species tolerant to soil salinity and burial, most abundant on accreting beaches; a group of species tolerant only to burial, which were abundant on all coasts; and 3 groups that lacked specific responses to burial and soil salinity and were most abundant on stable and erosive coasts. Accreting foredunes showed the lowest species richness and functional diversity, because only a few species were tolerant to burial and soil salinity. In the foredune environment, sediment dynamics and geomorphological processes act as environmental filters that largely determine the floristic and functional composition of the community

    Se presentan una síntesis sobre la taxonomía, ecología y distribución de la superfamilia Hydrophiloidea en México, una clave para géneros y una lista para géneros y especies con información sobre los estados donde se han registrado. Los Hydrophiloidea están representados en México por 6 familias, 9 tribus, 36 géneros, 181 especies y 6 subespecies, que corresponden al 20% de los géneros y 6% de las especies en el mundo, y al 95% y 67 % respectivamente para Mesoamérica. Se registran por primera vez para el estado de Veracruz Oosternum attacomis Spangler, 1962 y Sphaeridium scarabaeoides Linneo, 1758. Los estados con mayor riqueza de especies son Veracruz (72), Oaxaca (50), Sinaloa (44) y Sonora (43)

    Comparison of mouthpart morphology of three species of Mexican Oniticellini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) in relation to their trophic habits

    The purpose of this study is to describe the differences in the mouthparts of three Mexican species of Oniticellini that make use of different trophic resources. Euoniticellus intermedius (Reiche) is a coprophage par excellence, Attavicinus monstrosus (Bates) is a specialist in dry particles, and Liatongus rhinocerulus (Bates), a saprophage, is sometimes observed in excrement and on small cadavers, but mainly on rotting mushrooms. The results show no substantial structural differences among the species studied, though for each one, particular characteristics are evident
