    Photoluminescence study of interdiffusion in In0,53Ga0,47/As/InP surface quantum wells

    We have investigated the thermal stability and interdiffusion of In0.53Ga0.47As/InP surface quantum wells. In these structures the optically active InGaAs layer is bounded on one side by vacuum and on the other side by InP. We obtain well‐defined photoluminescence emission spectra with high intensity. After rapid thermal annealing at temperatures between 500 and 900 °C (annealing time 1 min) we observe strong emission energy shifts of up to 316 meV. By using a simple model of ion intermixing we estimate large interdiffusion coefficients (e.g., 1.7×10−14 cm2 s−1 for T=900 °C) and an activation energy of 1.3 eV for the surface quantum wells

    Start Intention Detection of Cyclists using an LSTM Network

    In this article, we present an approach for start intention detection of cyclists based on their head trajectories. Therefore, we are using a network architecture based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) cells, which is able to handle input sequences of different lengths. This is important because, for example, due to occlusions, cyclists often only become visible to approaching vehicles shortly before dangerous situations occur. Hence, the dependency of the results on the input sequence length is investigated. We use a dataset with 206 situations where cyclists were transitioning from waiting to moving that was recorded from a moving vehicle in inner-city traffic.With an input sequence length of 1.0 s we achieve an F1-score of 96.2% on average 0.680 s after the first movement of the bicycle. We obtain similar results for sequence lengths down to 0.2 s. For shorter sequences, the results regarding the F1-score and the mean detection time deteriorate considerably

    Mandating the Sustainability Disclosure in Annual Reports – Evidence from the United Kingdom

    This study investigates the sustainability disclosure effects of the introduction of the Companies Act 2006 Regulations 2013 in the United Kingdom. The regulation mandates the disclosure of information on greenhouse gas emissions, gender distribution and human rights issues. We examine two research questions: first, whether firms increased disclosure on the mandated topics after the regulation became effective relative to a control group, and second, whether a potential increase in disclosure is moderated by firms’ reporting incentives, namely, firms’ capital market visibility, growth orientation, governance structure, prior voluntary sustainability disclosure levels and critical media coverage. Our sample consists of the FTSE-350 firms and a matched control group of US firms. We use textual analysis to assess the disclosure of the mandated sustainability topics in firms’ annual reports. Specifically, we examine two types of disclosure, namely, the disclosure of the mandated key performance indicators and the narrative disclosure. Our results reveal a significant increase for both types of disclosure relative to the control group. Overall, this treatment effect tends to be smaller for firms with higher reporting incentives, i. e., reporting incentives mitigate the regulatory effect. Taken together, our results suggest that both standards and reporting incentives shape firms’ sustainability disclosure level

    Enhancing the ATHENA effective area at low x-ray energies with unconventional overcoatings

    Low density overcoatings (mainly based on materials containing Carbon) onto usual hi Z materials (like Ir, Au or Pt) have been proposed more than 10 years ago for enhancing the X-ray reflectivity at low energy (between 0.5 and 4 keV) in X-ray astronomical optics. The hack is to use the total reflection from the low density material (which do not suffer much the photoelectric absorption) at low energy, while the photons at high energy are reflected by the high density material. Now for several future projects like e.g. ATHENA and eXTP it is foreseen the use of low density overcoatings that will importantly increase the effective area at low energy. In this poster we will discuss about the use of materials different from the ones considered so far, in particular based on a thin layer of Chromium followed by another layer of a Carbon-like material, and of novel approaches for their application.Poste

    REITs in Europa : ein Vergleich von rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen und Marktkapitalisierungen

    Dieses Arbeitspapier liefert eine vergleichende Bestandsaufnahme des REIT-Marktes in Eu-ropa. Für ausgewählte Länder (Deutschland, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Belgien und Nieder-lande) wird analysiert, wie die wesentlichen rechtlichen Regelungen bezüglich REITs in dem Land aussehen, wobei Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der nationalen Regelungen deut-lich werden. Dabei wird auch dargestellt, wie sich der REIT-Markt des jeweiligen Landes unter den dort gegebenen Voraussetzungen entwickelt hat. Dieser Teil der Analyse liefert sowohl Informati-onen zu den wichtigsten REIT-Gesellschaften wie auch zur gesamten Marktkapitalisierung des REIT-Segments in dem Land. Das Arbeitspapier schließt mit dem Fazit, dass sich die Ausgestaltung des REIT-Regimes auf die Entwicklung dieses Kapitalmarktsegments in den jeweiligen Ländern erkennbar ausgewirkt hat
