Information overload in the information age: a review of the literature from business administration, business psychology, and related disciplines with a bibliometric approach and framework development
In the light of the information age, information overload research in new areas (e.g., social media, virtual collaboration) rises rapidly in many fields of research in business administration with a variety of methods and subjects. This review article analyzes the development of information overload literature in business administration and related interdisciplinary fields and provides a comprehensive and overarching overview using a bibliometric literature analysis combined with a snowball sampling approach. For the last decade, this article reveals research directions and bridges of literature in a wide range of fields of business administration (e.g., accounting, finance, health management, human resources, innovation management, international management, information systems, marketing, manufacturing, or organizational science). This review article identifies the
major papers of various research streams to capture the pulse of the information overload-related research and suggest new questions that could be addressed in the future and identifies concrete open gaps for further research. Furthermore, this article presents a new framework for structuring information overload issues which extends our understanding of influence factors and effects of information overload in the decision-making process
A Software Engineer's Competencies: Undergraduate Preconceptions in Contrast to Teach-ing Intentions
Unlike numerous scientific disciplines, the field of engineering has rarely been subject to investigations of undergraduate pre-/misconceptions except for STEM subjects within engineering degrees. When it comes to Software Engineering, some special issues have to be taken into account (e.g. novelty of the discipline and immateriality of the product) that make this discipline hard to teach and learn. Additionally, it requires a wide range of different technical competencies as well as soft skills. As a consequence, the goal is to improve learning by using undergraduates’ “right” conceptions as “points of departure” and reduce learning obstacles by facing misconceptions.
This paper is giving some first insights into a quantitative study conducted with undergraduates – before and after instruction – as well as two professors using a questionnaire to rate Software Engineering competencies to elicit preconceptions
Reflectivity-enhancement at low x-ray energies in astronomical telescopes using low-density overcoatings: alternative materials and deposition methods
Low density overcoatings (mainly based on materials containing Carbon) onto usual high-density coatings (based i.e. on materials like e.g. like Ir, Au or Pt) have been proposed since many years ago in order to enhance the X- ray reflectivity at low energy (between 0.5 and 4 keV) of X-ray astronomical optics. The trick is to make use of the total reflection from the thin low-density material (which does not suffer much the photoelectric absorption) at low X-ray energies; the reflection of photons at higher energies (< 4 keV) occurs thanks to the much denser material under the overcoating. For several future projects, like e.g. ATHENA, LYNX and eXTP, it is foreseen the use of low-density overcoatings that will importantly increase the effective area at low X-ray energies. In this paper we will introduce the use of overcoatings based on materials different from the usual ones considered so far like C, B4C and SiC. In particular, we will discuss about a novel approach based on the use of thin layer of a Carbon-like materials deposited using a dip coating method. A possible combination with an intermediate thin layer of Chromium deposited e.g. via sputtering onto the usual high density material (Ir, Au or Pt) before the application of the Carbon-like material is also considered in the study, because it can further greatly enhance the soft X-ray effective area of future X-ray telescopes
Total spiking probability edges: A cross-correlation based method for effective connectivity estimation of cortical spiking neurons
Background: Connectivity is a relevant parameter for the information flow within neuronal networks. Network connectivity can be reconstructed from recorded spike train data. Various methods have been developed to estimate connectivity from spike trains. New method: In this work, a novel effective connectivity estimation algorithm called Total Spiking Probability Edges (TSPE) is proposed and evaluated. First, a cross-correlation between pairs of spike trains is calculated. Second, to distinguish between excitatory and inhibitory connections, edge filters are applied on the resulting cross-correlogram. Results: TSPE was evaluated with large scale in silico networks and enables almost perfect reconstructions (true positive rate of approx. 99% at a false positive rate of 1% for low density random networks) depending on the network topology and the spike train duration. A distinction between excitatory and inhibitory connections was possible. TSPE is computational effective and takes less than 3 min on a high-performance computer to estimate the connectivity of an 1 h dataset of 1000 spike trains. Comparison of existing methods: TSPE was compared with connectivity estimation algorithms like Transfer Entropy based methods, Filtered and Normalized Cross-Correlation Histogram and Normalized Cross-Correlation. In all test cases, TSPE outperformed the compared methods in the connectivity reconstruction accuracy. Conclusions: The results show that the accuracy of functional connectivity estimation of large scale neuronal networks has been enhanced by TSPE compared to state of the art methods. Furthermore, TSPE enables the classification of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic effects
Electrochemical Characterization of Graphene Microelectrodes for Biological Applications
Graphene is a promising material both as a coating for existing neural electrodes as well as for transparent electrodes made exclusively from graphene. We studied graphene‐based microelectrodes by investigating their recording and stimulation properties in order to evaluate their suitability for neuronal implants. In this work, we compare three different electrode material compositions. Microelectrode arrays (MEA) with an electrode size of about 700 μm2 were prepared of gold, graphene on gold, and plain graphene on glass substrate. In order to reduce polymer contamination during graphene transfer, we employed a polymer‐free transfer and lift‐off process. Impedance studies revealed a value of 2.3 MΩ at 1 kHz for plain, and 0.88 MΩ for graphene on gold. Neuronal recording experiments showed a sufficient SNR for both graphene‐based materials and a stable impedance, unaffected by surface degradation metal electrodes are known for. Stimulation measurements yielded a charge injection capacity of 0.15 mC/cm2 using biphasic pulses of 1 ms and 1 μA transparent graphene electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry revealed a large voltage range of −1.4 V to +1.6 V before water electrolysis occurs. Graphene‐coated gold microelectrodes show enhanced recording properties, whereas plain graphene electrodes might be better suited for stimulation applications

Power quality evaluation for observatories
Within the project SLOBATCO the question did arise, to what extend observatories have to rely on adequate
power quality, e.g. the perfect sinusoidal shape of supply voltage and current, in order to ensure safe
operation and accurate measurement results. International power quality standards are put in perspective
with requirement specifications. Telescope operators indicate partial or total loss of function of measurement instruments. Measurements
conducted during SLOBATCO project substantiate the need for power quality measurement campaigns.Poste
