Ellipsometrische Charakterisierung von Polydopamin für funktionelle technische Schichten

    No full text
Poste

A New Symmetrical Source-Based DC/AC Converter with Experimental Verification

    No full text
This research paper introduces a new topology for multilevel inverters, emphasizing the reduction of harmonic distortion and the optimization of the component count. The complexity of an inverter is determined by the number of power switches, which is significantly reduced in the presented topology, as fewer switches require fewer driver circuits. In this proposed topology, a new single-phase generalized multilevel inverter is analyzed with an equal magnitude of voltage supply. A 9-level, 11-level, or 13-level symmetrical inverter with RL load is analyzed in MATLAB/Simulink 2019b and then experimentally validated using the dSPACE-1103 controller. The experimental verification of the load voltage and current with different modulation indices is also presented. The analysis of the proposed topology concludes that the total required number of components is lower than that necessary for the classical inverter topologies, as well as for some new proposed multilevel inverters that are also compared with the proposed topology in terms of gate driver circuits, power switches, and DC sources, which thereby enhances the goodness of the proposed topology. Thus, a comparison of this inverter with the other topologies validates its acceptance

Drowning in emails: Investigating email classes and work stressors as antecedents of high email load and implications for well-being

    No full text
Introduction: High email load has been associated with impaired well-being because emails impose specific demands, disturb the workflow, and thereby overtax individuals’ action regulation toward prioritized goals. However, the causes and well-being-related consequences of email load are not yet well understood, as previous studies have neglected the interaction type and function of emails as well as co-occurring stressors as antecedents of high email load and have relied predominantly on cross-sectional designs. Methods: In two studies, we aimed to clarify the nature of email load through the lens of action regulation theory. The first study, a two-wave investigation with a fortnightly interval, examined the lagged relationships among email load, work stressors, strain, and affective well-being. The sample included 444 individuals across various occupations and organizations, with 196 of them working from home or remotely at least part of the time. In the second cross-sectional study, we surveyed 257 individuals using a convenience sampling approach, 108 of whom worked from home or remotely at least partially. This study focused on evaluating how different email classes—distinguished by email interaction type (received vs. processed) and email function (communication vs. task)—serve as predictors of high email load. Results: In Study 1, we found a positive lagged effect of high email load on strain, even when controlling for the co-occurring stressors time pressure and work interruptions. In addition, lagged effects of email load on time pressure and interruptions were identified, while no evidence was found for the reverse direction. The results of Study 2 suggest that only the number of communication-related emails received, but not the number of task-related emails received, or the number of all emails processed contribute to high email load. Conclusion: Findings suggest that email load can be considered a unique stressor and that different classes of email need to be distinguished to understand its nature. Clarifying the sources of email load can help develop effective strategies to address it

On the advances in machine learning and complex network measures to an EEG dataset from DMT experiments

There is a growing interest in the medical use of psychedelic substances, as preliminary studies using them for psychiatric disorders have shown positive results. In particular, one of these substances is N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), an agonist serotonergic psychedelic that can induce profound alterations in the state of consciousness. In this work, we use an exploratory tool to reveal DMT-induced changes in brain activity using EEG data and provide new insights into the mechanisms of action of this psychedelic substance. We used a two-class classification based on (A) the connectivity matrix or (B) complex network measures derived from it as input to a support vector machine. We found that both approaches could detect changes in the brain's automatic activity, with case (B) showing the highest AUC (89%), indicating that complex network measurements best capture the brain changes that occur due to DMT use. In the second step, we ranked the features that contributed the most to this result. For case (A), we found that differences in the high alpha, low beta, and delta frequency bands were most important in distinguishing between the state before and after DMT inhalation, which is consistent with the results described in the literature. Further, the connection between the temporal (TP8) and central cortex (C3) and between the precentral gyrus (FC5) and the lateral occipital cortex (P8) contributed most to the classification result. The connection between regions TP8 and C3 has been found in the literature associated with finger movements that might have occurred during DMT consumption. However, the connection between cortical areas FC5 and P8 has not been found in the literature and is presumably related to the volunteers' emotional, visual, sensory, perceptual, and mystical experiences during DMT consumption. For case (B), closeness centrality was the most crucial complex network measure. Furthermore, we discovered larger communities and longer average path lengths when DMT was used and the converse when not, showing that the balance between functional segregation and integration had been disrupted. These findings support the idea that cortical brain activity becomes more entropic under psychedelics. Overall, a robust computational workflow has been developed here with interpretability of how DMT (or other psychedelics) modify brain networks and insights into their mechanism of action. Finally, the same methodology applied here may help interpret EEG time series from patients who consumed other psychedelic drugs

The role of supplier-induced demand on the occurrence of information overload in managerial reporting environments

    No full text
This article develops a model showing how information reporters influence information load among decision makers and generate supplier-induced information demand (SID). The intra-corporate information-providing process is an expert market with information asymmetry. I show that information overload occurs as an SID and is the result of informational overconsumption deliberately caused by the supplying reporter. My analysis highlights that the information overload depends on the specificity of information. It also shows that the decision maker may face a hold-up situation in light of switching costs. The more specific the information needed, the higher the threat of information overload. The strategic content of information tempts reporting managers to overload the decision maker for the purpose of increasing their reporting transfer price and to discourage the decision maker from getting the information from another reporting manager. Although the decision maker knows a part of the information demand, information overload involves the cost of using unnecessary inputs, information overload occurs as an SID of information, even if other competing reporting managers exist. My analysis demonstrates that information overload can occur due to uncertainty and opportunism of both the decision maker and reporting managers

Spectral measurements and life science experiments using extreme radiation exposures at high altitude

    No full text
The ASTRABAX project ("Aschaffenburg Stratospheric Balloon Experiment"), being funded for the years 2024 to 2026, is designed as a multimodal platform for the investigation of radiation exposures at high altitude. The UV-C spectral region is of special interest. Spectral measurements observe this region of interest using miniature UV-VIS spectrometers. The platform also contains a radiation dosimetry, a power source for on-board electronics, and common shielding setups for multiple spectral combinations. Human cells are exposed simultaneously to radiation of different compositions as particle, X-ray and UV radiation. After the flight, possible changes in the spatial chromatin organization are examined. Material samples intended for the development of satellite components are irradiated also. Investigations under such conditions are realistic and crucial for high altitude flights in the atmosphere, for space flights as well as for comparable exposures on other objects of the solar system, and even for exoplanet habitats to some extent

    No full text
