    Role of Oral Health Providers in Supporting HPV-Related Cancer Prevention in the Dental Setting

    Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination can prevent HPV-related illness and associated cancers, including oropharyngeal. The safety and efficacy of HPV vaccination has been well-established, but national HPV vaccination rates remain unacceptably low with persistent disparities for certain populations. While vaccination has been one of the biggest public health accomplishments of the last century, vaccine hesitancy continues to grow in the United States, and remains a challenging element of low HPV vaccine uptake. Description: Oral health providers have been traditionally siloed and largely uninvolved in vaccination counseling and administration, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought oral health providers, pharmacists and other allied professions together to join in disease prevention efforts. Over 70% of oropharyngeal cancer cases are caused by HPV, placing oral health providers in a unique and critical ethical position to join in HPV prevention efforts by recommending the HPV vaccine to patients and directly administering the vaccine when appropriate. This discussion aims to (1) educate oral health providers about HPV and oropharyngeal cancer, (2) provide concrete strategies and resources for incorporating HPV prevention into clinical dental practice, and (3) discuss the challenges of patient vaccine hesitancy and opportunities for patient education

    Conversations with HSLS:09: Reflections on College-Going by Black Queer and Trans Scholars

    This paper threads together quantitative data on Black QT students from the HSLS:09 data set, while connecting the authors\u27 lived experiences about the college-going process. According to this data, Black QT high school students were heavily influenced by parents and peers and less influenced by school counselors and teachers regarding decisions about college and post-high school trajectories. In response, we engage in collaborative autoethnography (CAE) to center our narratives as Black QT people by threading our commonalities and differences to highlight what tensions and connections emerged from our experiences with the college-going process to add context to the aforementioned data

    Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that causes red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped, blocking blood flow and leading to severe pain, organ damage, and shortened life expectancy. Current treatments are often toxic, costly, or only partially effective. Albert Opare\u27s research aims to develop aromatic aldehydes as affordable, functional cures for SCD. These small molecules bind directly to hemoglobin, preventing red blood cells from sickling and reducing the complications of the disease. Specifically, Albert is synthesizing amide analogs of our clinical lead compound, ILX-002, to improve potency and stability

    Advanced Air Preheater Sealing Systems for Enhanced Efficiency and Reliability in Thermal Power Plants

    Global electricity generation still relies heavily on thermal power plants, which consume vast amounts of fuel and emit significant amounts of carbon dioxide. A major but often overlooked source of inefficiency in these plants lies within the rotary regenerative air preheater (RAPH), a critical heat-exchange component where air leakage can exceed 20% in aging units. This leakage increases fuel consumption, parasitic fan power, and CO₂ emissions, while degrading boiler reliability. This research introduces advanced adaptive sealing systems designed to mitigate these losses by dynamically compensating for rotor eccentricity, thermal distortion, and wear under harsh operating conditions. Brush seals, composed of thousands of flexible filaments, conform to surface irregularities and varying gap sizes, dissipating stress under deformation to minimize drag and wear. Unlike rigid strip seals—which fail to adapt to uneven surfaces and allow leakage at wider gaps—brush seals offer superior abrasion resistance, flex life, and bend recovery. They maintain sealing integrity under high differential pressures and thermal expansion, ensuring consistent performance across operating conditions. A reverse-engineering methodology using 3D modeling and in-situ rotor mapping enabled custom seal design without OEM drawings. Field deployments across 25 power plants in 12 countries demonstrated leakage reductions from 22% to as low as 4.5%, fan-power savings up to 15%, and annual CO₂ reductions exceeding 10,000 tons per unit. Thermodynamic analysis following ASME PTC 4.3 confirmed heat-rate improvements of 170–280 kJ/kWh and payback periods under six months, achieving carbon-abatement costs below $4 per ton. Materials engineering investigations addressed corrosion and erosive wear, while predictive-maintenance frameworks incorporating leakage mapping and digital-twin integration enhanced lifecycle reliability. The study concludes with a techno-economic roadmap for scaling the technology to Rothemühle-type air preheaters and future spring-loaded adaptive seals

    Investigating the Association Between Parental Paid Sick Leave Benefit and Children\u27s Dental Care Utilization

    Objective: The purpose of this research is to examine the association between paid sick leave (PSL) benefit for employed parents and their child\u27s dental care utilization, including preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services. Methods: Using pooled data from the 2017–2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, we created a dyadic observational unit linking children aged 0–17 years with their parents (n = 7652) specifically focusing on the younger children of employed parents. Descriptive statistics and a multivariate logistic regression model were employed to examine the association between parental PSL benefit and child dental care utilization, accounting for various child and parent level covariates. All analyses were adjusted for complex survey design, and survey weights were used to get national estimates. Results: Seventy-six percent of children had at least one employed parent with PSL benefit in 2017–19. Among them, 44% of children had preventive visits, 45% had diagnostic visits, and 17% had treatment visits. The adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that children with parental PSL benefit had higher odds of having preventive dental visits (odds ratio [OR] 1.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.38) and diagnostic visits (OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.03, 1.41) compared with children without parental PSL benefit. Conclusion: Parental PSL benefit was associated with augmenting the use of preventive and diagnostic dental care visits among children. Collaboration among policymakers, employers, and dental providers is essential to address disparities in children\u27s dental services utilization and support PSL policies for working parents
