Stained Glass, Depicting Absence
No full textStained Glass, Depicting Absence is a collection of poetry that weaves between the speaker’s familial history in an eastern Ohio coal town, the speaker’s return to a Catholic faith left behind by her family, the storied relationship between French medieval Catholic scholars Heloise d\u27Argenteuil and Peter Abelard, and the speaker’s own restless and complicated relationships and the small and daily conversions they bring her to. These poems are, at their core, devotional. Each of the collection’s threads return again and again to the ways that the observable and imperfect things of this world—from Pittsburgh’s bridges and Wheeling’s crumbling buildings, to Heloise’s erotic desires, letters, and loss, to thin apartment walls and windowless English department offices—testify to what exists between and beyond, and to a God who remains close and personally knowable not merely in spite of, but because of, the many failures of our language, our loves, and our selves

Personal Relevance: This project merges my passion for film photography and modern technology, aiming to create a design that bridges traditional and modern practices.
Local Relevance: Richmond’s rich historical context provides an ideal setting to illystrate that traditional arts like analog photography can be preserved while integrating modern digital technology.
Global Relevance: Globally, there is an increasing trend toward combining traditional and modern design approaches, particularly in architecture and interior design. Synthesizing analog and digital means is used to meet the balance between materiality and modern technology (Rose, 2014; Pelizzari & Scrivano, 2011). Designers balance tactile materials like wood and stone with digital tools to design spaces that honor tradition while embracing innovation.
Issues in Interior Design: Interior design faces similar challenges to photography, material experience is significant. Designers must be able to integrate modern technologies without losing the sensory engagement that traditional techniques achieve (Minniti, 2016). Photography studios and other adaptive reuse projects require a balance between materiality and innovation, which ensures that analog and digital elements can coexist within the space (Keightley & Pickering, 2014).
Research Question:
Design Conflict: Interior design can be used to fill the gap between the physical experience of analog photography and the accuracy of digital technology. Similar to photography, it is challenged to retain material richness in the face of changing digital demands and to reconcile sincerity with innovation.
Design Objective: This project explores strategies in the using contrasting materials, flexible layouts, and sensory-focused details to support both analog and digital workflows. The objective is to design a soace where material interaction and technological flexibility further enhance the creative process.
Method:
Literature Review: Source Keightley & Pickering (2014) will be reviewed for the role of materiality in analog and digital photography. Fackler (2019) provides insights into the resurgence of analog methods in digital spaces, highlighting the importance of balancing both elements.
Case Studies: Explore flexible and adaptable space designs that can accommodate both analog and digital workflows, informed by projects such as Minniti (2016), which investigates hybrid creative spaces.
Interviews: Engage with photographers who use both analog and digital techniques to discover their spatial needs in a studio setting. These interviews can offer insights into how spaces can be designed to support hybrid workflows.
Outcomes:
Reasons for Interest: Dematerialization refers to the reduction of physical, tangible experiences in virtual environments. In photography, it is evident in the loss of the tactile process of film development, which many designers and photographers are attempting to preserve (Fackler, 2019).
Outcomes: This project proposes a photography center integrating analog and digital modes through materiality and sensory engagement. Modular furniture designs and spaces will support shifting creative needs.
Contrasting materials, textures, light, and touch will enhance the user experience in an interactive environment that seamlessly merges traditional tactile with modern technological accuracy
Understanding the Experiences of People of Color who Engage in Psychedelic Use
Get PDFThere is a growing body of research that supports the potential of psychedelic substances being used to support individuals with alleviating mental health symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and existential distress. Though it has been labeled that Western society is within a psychedelic renaissance, it should also be noted that many indigenous cultures have utilized plant-based medicines as a form of healing and connection. Despite the ever increasing amount of studies being conducted, a consistent deficit is the lack of representation of non-White individuals in research samples. Utilizing the theoretical framework of set and setting, the present study aims to examine the lived experiences of POC in the psychedelic community to help gain insight into the way individuals perceive the impact that psychedelic experiences have on one\u27s racial and spiritual identity development. The four group experiential themes (GETs) reflect the convergence and divergence of participants\u27 experiences with psychedelics, including (1) racial identity, (2) aspects of psychedelic journeys, (3) spirituality and spiritual connections, and (4) the future of the psychedelic ecosystem. Radical hope amid generational oppression and Puerto Rican well-being
Get PDFOppressive systems (e.g., colonialism, racism, capitalism) create a disparate distribution of power that, through various mechanisms, negatively impacts the health and well-being of members of the oppressed group. Boricuas have experienced over 500 years of oppression, with the island currently maintaining a colonial relationship with the United States. As these adverse effects of oppression are identified, the need for protective factors (e.g., hope) has emerged. This study explored how islander Boricuas practice radical hope, understand their history of oppression and resistance, and how they perceived it to impact their overall well-being. Utilizing a phenomenological qualitative approach, I conducted 15 semi-structured interviews with Boricuas living on the island. Then, I used thematic analysis with an abductive approach to analyze the transcripts, guided by the radical hope framework. Findings revealed several themes around five overarching qualitative research questions in the area of: (1) understanding the island’s history of colonial and governmental oppression and islander Boricuas’ resistance to internalized inferiority and through activism, (2) recognizing the impact of oppression across psychological, physical, economic, educational, and collective well-being domains, (3) embracing ancestral pride through familial and cultural pride, (4) envisioning future possibilities for Puerto Rico through seeking knowledge, being open to change, and asking for governmental reform, and (5) meaning-making and purpose through positively impacting others and intentional rootedness
