PERCEPTIONS OF MODERATE SEDATION SUCCESS IN THE PEDIATRIC POPULATION

    No full text
Purpose: To compare perceptions of dental providers including pediatric dentists, general dentists, and pediatric dental residents in how they view the success of moderate sedation (MS) in the pediatric population. Methods: A 22-item survey was distributed to members of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), including pediatric dentists, general dentists, and residents. The survey included provider preferences and attitudes towards MS, ranking patient considerations and other factors associated with MS success. Results: Of 470 respondents, 73% (n=342) reported current MS use, with rates highest among residents (89%), followed by residency-trained pediatric dentists (71%) and general dentists (64%) (P=.0006). Provider outlook towards use of MS was not significantly associated with provider type (P=.3364). MS users had more positive attitudes toward sedation than non-users (P\u3c .0001). The rates for treatment completed and patient behavior were significantly higher than patient satisfaction or duration of treatment when measuring success of MS (P\u3c .0001). Conclusion: MS success was primarily associated with treatment completion and patient behavior, rather than patient satisfaction or appointment duration. Providers prioritized behavioral and treatment outcomes as indicators of success

    Reply STOP to Stop

Over the course of 8 years working in progressive political strategy, 2015–2023, I became increasingly critical of the systems, formulas and tools we were using to communicate with voters. Reply STOP to Stop is documentation of my time at graduate school, of wrestling with ideas of political design, language, communication and distribution. I analyzed my past work — all the texts, emails, social media posts, print ads, web banners, videos and other miscellaneous scripted content — and wondered if we would all be better off without it. Would elections be fairer, would there be less fake news, more community building? Less divisiveness? Was I part of the problem? I used to believe my job was an act of resistance against conservative ideals and MAGA propaganda, but now all this content felt like adding wood to a fire. I made work about this disconnect, how the language in politics often felt flat and soulless when the issues were anything but. My research became about political language — the absurd, hyper-edited and often useless nature of it. I thought about design’s role in distributing political communication; I delved into the ad targeting and focus groups, scripting and editing, words and sentence structure, slogans and buzzwords. I tried to work within these systems — using their tools upside down or backwards — in an attempt to find a hidden truth, something more real

    Afterlife Recovered

The poems in this collection seek to reframe the language we use to describe and characterize addiction and recovery. The poems interweave in two major threads, Addiction poems and Recovery poems, as a way to complicate and contextualize the interplays between the two states, and to recenter the I, the internal experience, which often proves to be illegible and elusive. Via references to childhood, to Dante\u27s Purgatory, to the myths of Actaeon and Artemis, Echo and Narcissus, the speaker explores modes of indulgence, self-isolation, the unreliability of memory, and the reaches we must make towards hope

EVALUATION OF SUCCESS AND PARENTAL SATISFACTION OF RESIN POLYMER COMPARED TO STAINLESS STEEL CROWNS FOR RESTORATION OF PRIMARY MOLAR TEETH: A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

    No full text
Purpose: To evaluate the success, as well as the impact on child oral health-related quality of life comparing resin polymer (RP) crowns (NuSmile BioFlx) and stainless steel (SSC) crowns (3M ESPE) for the restoration of primary molars. Methods: A prospective, randomized, split-mouth clinical trial was conducted in children aged 3 to 9 years requiring restoration of primary molars under general anesthesia. RP crowns were randomly assigned to one side of the mouth and SSCs were placed on the contralateral side. Clinical success was assessed at 2-weeks follow-ups. Oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL).was assessed using the ECOHIS questionnaire and parental satisfaction was assessed at 2 weeks follow up.. Statistical analysis included McNemar’s chi-square tests. Results: Twenty- four patients participated, 20 completed the 2-week follow-up and received 28 crowns of each type. Patients demonstrated decreased OHRQoL at baseline at both child and family levels. At the 2-week follow-up, RP crowns demonstrated significantly more issues with surface roughness (57% vs 0%, P=.0002) and issues with opposing tooth wear (18% vs 0%, P=.0736). One-third of the RP crowns had issues with the color match of the crown. None of the parents reported overall dissatisfaction with any of the crowns, although 86% indicated preference for RP crowns compared to 29% for SSC. Conclusion: RP crowns demonstrated more issues with surface roughness and opposing tooth wear at 2 weeks follow-up. None of the parents reported overall dissatisfaction with any of the crowns, although the majority of them preferred RP crown

Still Faces, Different Places: An Assessment of the Literature on the Face-to-Face Still Face Procedure for Cultural Congruence

Cultural understanding is a factor that impacts reliability of research results for observational studies. It is important to include participants of minority groups in research, as many people of color face disproportionate challenges in terms of healthcare access and resources. Within the context of mother-infant attachment, a technique known as the Face-to-Face Still Face procedure can be utilized to observe attachment styles and the bond between a parent and their infant. In order to combat subjectivity within the coding process for this Face-to-Face Still Face procedure, cultural congruence between the participants being observed in the study and the coding researchers qualifying behaviors should be considered. A literature search was conducted in which 12 articles, each utilizing coding to analyze mother-infant bonds, were reviewed to discover whether cultural congruence was reported or considered in the context of the coding process. None of the articles reviewed explicitly stated the cultural, racial, or ethnic backgrounds of the coding researchers. One article noted the nationalities of different members of the research team, with the nationalities of the research team and study participants matching. Another study noted that all the coding researchers were bilingual in the languages spoken by both groups of participants in the study. Details about the coding guidelines, educational background of the coding researchers, and the training process for coders was included in some articles. This review provides a starting point for further research into how a coding researcher’s personal background can influence the coding process, and therefore the reliability of results.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/uresposters/1486/thumbnail.jp

Existing in the Context: A Conjunctural Analysis of Kamala Harris Memes

Political memes have become a common way for people to express their political views online, helping politics reach young adults who weren’t previously interested. Consequently, politicians have begun sharing and creating memes themselves. The memeification of American politics has diminished debate about ideas, ideals, issues, and people’s vital interests, debasing voters by treating them not as citizens but as passive “consumers” and “spectators” of mediated politics. This paper helps make sense of this crisis, focusing on the example of former Vice President Kamala Harris. Vice President Kamala Harris\u27 memeified presidential campaign during the 2024 U.S. election targeted voters through a combination of social media posts on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, X, and Facebook. Along with her opponent, Donald Trump, each campaign’s social media account had its own distinct personality, with content and format curated to suit its target audience. This paper examines Kamala Harris memes to understand how they circulated and what impact they had. My inquiry comes in three distinct vignettes: the first political internet meme, the celebritization of politics, and the co-optation of Black joy under neoliberalism. Rooted in scholarship on internet memes, particularly political internet memes and scholarship on affect, this article employs conjunctural analysis to illuminate the broader socio-political conjuncture and the current and future roles that political memes may play
