The Science of Russian Formalism and Modernist Formalesque: Radical Linguistic Aesthetics of Kazimir Malevich and Velimir Khlebnikov
The semiotic, particularly linguistic, essence of Futurism arguably laid the foundation for the early theories of Russian Formalism. Viktor Shklovsky, drawing inspiration from Futurist works, introduced the intriguing concept of the ‘resurrection of the word’ to establish the theory of creative estrangement. Within Russian Modernism and Avant-garde, exemplified by Symbolism and Futurism, a noteworthy development was establishing a dynamic interaction between verbal and visual elements. Avant-gardist visionaries, not only artists but also literary innovators, seamlessly integrated advancements from visual art, giving rise to a novel form of symbiotic semiosis. Consequently, the conventional boundaries between diverse art forms blurred, marking a distinctive Formalist feature that aligns with international Modernist aesthetics. The essay discusses this aesthetic through the prism of linguistic innovation.info:eu-repo/semantics/inPres
Roaring out of digital transformation
Can firms engaged in digital transformation (DT) build new profit streams that over-compensate the risk of market disruption? Using cross-sections of large firms globally, we find that firms are better off better off engaging in DT rather than not; however, the sufficient conditions to bounce forward are for firms to innovate in new products, markets and business models, and complete this renewal posture by strong digital capabilities ahead of peers. Firms failing this orientation may still gain some value compared to no DT but would suffer from profit growth pressure due to digital competition.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

The big sell: Privatizing East Germany's economy
Departing from communism, East Germany witnessed history's most extensive privatization program. While the program sparked global interest as a blueprint for economic transformation, its effectiveness remains disputed. Using unique firm-level data, we examine the program's objective to privatize the most competitive firms. We document that firms with higher baseline productivity are more likely to be privatized, yield higher prices, are more often acquired by West Germans, and are more likely to survive 20 years later. Inspecting the inner workings of the privatization agency, we illustrate challenges and lessons for how governments can design and implement industrial policy goals.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
Anion Transport by Bambusuril-Bile Acid Conjugates: Drastic Effect of the Cholesterol Content
Artificial anion transporters offer a potential way to treat deficiencies in cellular anion transport of genetic origins. In contrast to the large variety of mobile anion carriers and self-assembled anion channels reported, unimolecular anion channels are less investigated. Herein, we present a unique example of a unimolecular anion channel based on a bambusuril (BU) macrocycle, a well-established anion receptor. The BU structure was expanded by appending various bile acid residues allowing a single molecule to span the membrane. Chloride transport mediated by BUs through lipid bilayers was investigated in liposomes and these studies revealed a surprisingly high dependence of the anion transport activity on the cholesterol content in the liposomal membrane.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Essays on Wages and Productivity: The Role of GVCs, Tenure, and Global Warming
This PhD thesis includes three original microeconomic analyses that investigate critical factors influencing workers’ wages and firm productivity, and underpinning relevant megatrends poised to reshape economic systems and lifestyles worldwide for decades to come. Specifically, the thesis explores the following dimensions: firms’ relative positioning within Global Value Chains (GVCs), organizational tenure (i.e. the length of employment in a given firm), and the economic implications of global warming. The first two analyses focus on the Belgian labor market, while the third adopts a broader European perspective. Based on matched employer-employee data relative to the Belgian manufacturing industry for the period 2002-2010 combined with a unique indicator of firm-level upstreamness (i.e. the steps before the production of a firm meets final demand), Chapter 1 shows that workers earn significantly higher wages when employed in more upstream firms. However, the benefits from upstreamness are found to be unequally shared among workers, both along the wage distribution and when considering the gender dimension of the workforce. Using rich longitudinal matched employer-employee data on Belgian firms over the period 2005-2016, Chapter 2 point to positive, but decreasing, returns to tenure. The study also finds that the impact differs widely across several firm dimensions (e.g. task routineness, job complexity, capital intensity). Using longitudinal firm-level balance-sheet data from private sector firms in 14 European countries over the period 2013-2020, combined with detailed weather data, including temperature, Chapter 3 reveals that global warming significantly and negatively impacts firms’ Total Factor Productivity (TFP). Labor productivity also declines markedly as temperatures rise, while capital productivity remains unaffected – indicating that TFP is primarily affected through the labor input channel. Such impacts appear to persist across geographical, sectoral, and firm-specific dimensions.Doctorat en Sciences économiques et de gestioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublishe
Using DNA metabarcoding and direct behavioural observations to identify the diet of proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) in the Kinabatangan Floodplain, Sabah
Characterizing the feeding ecology of threatened species is essential to establish appropriate conservation strategies. We focused our study on the proboscis monkey ( Nasalis larvatus ), an endangered primate species which is endemic to the island of Borneo. Our survey was conducted in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary (LKWS), a riverine protected area that is surrounded by oil palm plantations. We aimed to determine the diet of multiple proboscis monkey groups by using two methods. First, we conducted boat-based direct observations (scan and ad libitum sampling) and identified 67 plant species consumed by the monkeys at their sleeping sites in early mornings and late afternoons. Secondly, we used the DNA metabarcoding approach, based on next-generation sequencing (NGS, MiSeq Illumina) of faecal samples (n = 155), using the short chloroplast sequence, the trnL (UAA) P6 loop. In addition, we built a DNA reference database with the local plants available in the LKWS. When combining feeding data from both methods, we reported a diverse dietary ecology in proboscis monkeys, with at least 89 consumed plant taxa, belonging to 76 genera and 45 families. Moreover, we were able to add 22 new genera as part of the diet of this endangered colobine primate in the LKWS. The two methods provided congruent and complementary results, both having their advantages and limitations. This study contributed to enhance the knowledge on the feeding ecology of proboscis monkeys, highlighting the significance of several plant species that should further be considered in habitat restoration plans or corridor establishment.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
