Lessons Learned from the RAICAM Doctoral Network Research Sprints
Doctoral Networks (DNs) aim to address systemic challenges in doctoral education, such as fostering interdisciplinarity, enabling international and intersectoral collaboration, enhancing employability, and promoting responsible innovation. While cohort-based training helps mitigate student isolation through workshops and summer schools, traditional DNs often struggle to fully realise their collaborative potential, often relying on predefined supervisor relationships or the initiative of individual researchers. In contrast, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DNs) prioritise doctoral candidates (DCs), challenging them to balance independent research with contributions to a shared, mission-driven objective. This study examines how structured training, including digital communities and application-focused research sprints, enhances system integration and collaboration within the Robotics and AI for Critical Asset Monitoring (RAICAM) Doctoral Network. DCs located across seven European countries worked in virtual teams, refining systems through structured workflows, weekly meetings, and shared workspaces before training schools. Through continuous online collaboration and targeted sprints, RAICAM facilitated interdisciplinary integration. Two research sprints, conducted in Italy and France, allowed teams to develop and test solutions for real-world challenges with an impact-driven plan that considers a given problem from and end-to-end perspective that requires and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. The results highlight the effectiveness of structured training in enhancing collaboration and adaptability, while identifying key areas for improvement. This study translates lessons from RAICAM into practical guidelines for future doctoral networks, demonstrating how structured training empowers students to drive interdisciplinary research independently
Implementation of a Real-Time ESC Simulation Environment into a Dynamic Driving Simulator (SiL/DiL)
The Electronic stability control (ESC) is a safety system that helps prevent vehicle skidding and loss of control. ESC systems are usually tested and calibrated on real vehicles, which is costly and time-consuming. This paper presents a novel approach to implement a serial production ESC simulation environment in a dynamic driving simulator. This allows performing objective and subjective evaluations of the ESC system at an early stage of the development process. The hardware and software components of the real-time simulation environment are described, as well as the integration of the ESC system and validation of its functionality. In a pilot study, expert drivers compared the simulated ESC system with the real one in different driving scenarios. The results show that the simulation environment and therefore the dynamic driving simulator can reproduce the behavior and performance of the real ESC system with high fidelity and accuracy, by providing useful feedback about the driving characteristics and stability of the vehicle. To conclude, the approach could reduce the development time and cost of ESC systems, as well as improve their quality and safety
Geriatrische Rehabilitation in unterschiedlichen Settings: CME Zertifizierte Fortbildung
Angesichts der rasch wachsenden Zahl Älterer und Hochbetagter gewinnt die geriatrische Rehabilitation an Bedeutung. Primäres Ziel ist nicht die Heilung von Erkrankungen, sondern der Erhalt bzw. die Wiederherstellung funktioneller Fähigkeiten, um Teilhabe, Autonomie und Lebensqualität zu sichern. Der Beitrag vermittelt Konzepte der geriatrischen Rehabilitation, einschließlich des auf der Internationalen Klassifikation der Funktionsfähigkeit, Behinderung und Gesundheit (ICF) basierenden Vorgehens, der partizipativen Zieldefinition und des geriatrisch-rehabilitativen Basismanagements. Zugangswege und -voraussetzungen gemäß Sozialgesetzbuch V (SGB V) sowie die Unterschiede der 4 Versorgungsformen – stationär, ambulant, mobil und frührehabilitativ – werden dargestellt. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt der individuellen Zielplanung und der Auswahl geeigneter Rehabilitationsstrategien (Restitution, Kompensation, Adaptation). Towards Real-Time Tool Wear Detection on Edge Devices: A Lightweight Dimensionality Reduction Approach for Spindle Integrated Cutting Force Sensor Data
We present an efficient algorithm for monitoring milling tool wear using data from a spindle integrated Cutting Force Sensor. In a near-real-world milling experiment, we collected quality data of the manufactured part, tool wear, and cutting forces. A preprocessing pipeline transforms the data from time-domain to angle-domain and ensures its integrity. Using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) for dimensionality reduction, we achieve a compact encoding of key sensor data and avoid manual intervention in the feature engineering. Notably, the SVD reconstruction error proves to be a reliable indicator for tool wear
Szenarien für die Zukunft des Wintertourismus in Bayern 2050
Der Winter(sport)tourismus in Deutschland steht vor verschiedenen Herausforderungen wie Klimakrise oder demografischer Wandel. Trotz seiner hohen Abhängigkeit von den klimatischen Bedingungen und seiner Betroffenheit vom voranschreitenden Klimawandel wird für die Zukunft von einem weiteren Wachstum der Nachfrage ausgegangen. Insbesondere tiefer gelegene und oftmals weniger schneesichere Skigebiete stehen bereits heute unter enormen Anpassungsdruck an die klimatischen Veränderungen sowie die sich wandelnden gesellschaftlichen und technischen Rahmenbedingungen. Um diesen Anpassungsdruck zu bewältigen, können mögliche Zukunftsstrategien in Form von Szenarien hilfreiche Unterstützung bieten. In Bayern wurden vom Bayerischen Zentrum für Tourismus im Jahr 2024 Szenarien zur Zukunft des Wintertourismus in Bayern entwickelt, die im vorliegenden Projektbericht vorgestellt werden.Winter (sports) tourism in Germany is facing various challenges such as the climate crisis and demographic change. Despite its high dependency on climatic conditions and its exposure to advancing climate change, demand is expected to continue growing in the future. Lower-lying and often less snow-sure ski resorts are already under enormous pressure to adapt to climate change and changing social and technical conditions. To cope with this pressure to adapt, possible future strategies in the form of scenarios can provide helpful support. In Bavaria, the Bavarian Center for Tourism has developed scenarios for the future of winter tourism in Bavaria in 2024, which are presented in this project report
Global, regional, and national trends in routine childhood vaccination coverage from 1980 to 2023 with forecasts to 2030: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023
Background
Since its inception in 1974, the Essential Programme on Immunization (EPI) has achieved remarkable success, averting the deaths of an estimated 154 million children worldwide through routine childhood vaccination. However, more recent decades have seen persistent coverage inequities and stagnating progress, which have been further amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, WHO set ambitious goals for improving vaccine coverage globally through the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030). Now halfway through the decade, understanding past and recent coverage trends can help inform and reorient strategies for approaching these aims in the next 5 years.
Methods
Based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2023, this study provides updated global, regional, and national estimates of routine childhood vaccine coverage from 1980 to 2023 for 204 countries and territories for 11 vaccine-dose combinations recommended by WHO for all children globally. Employing advanced modelling techniques, this analysis accounts for data biases and heterogeneity and integrates new methodologies to model vaccine scale-up and COVID-19 pandemic-related disruptions. To contextualise historic coverage trends and gains still needed to achieve the IA2030 coverage targets, we supplement these results with several secondary analyses: (1) we assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on vaccine coverage; (2) we forecast coverage of select life-course vaccines up to 2030; and (3) we analyse progress needed to reduce the number of zero-dose children by half between 2023 and 2030.
Findings
Overall, global coverage for the original EPI vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (first dose [DTP1] and third dose [DTP3]), measles (MCV1), polio (Pol3), and tuberculosis (BCG) nearly doubled from 1980 to 2023. However, this long-term trend masks recent challenges. Coverage gains slowed between 2010 and 2019 in many countries and territories, including declines in 21 of 36 high-income countries and territories for at least one of these vaccine doses (excluding BCG, which has been removed from routine immunisation schedules in some countries and territories). The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these challenges, with global rates for these vaccines declining sharply since 2020, and still not returning to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels as of 2023. Coverage for newer vaccines developed and introduced in more recent years, such as immunisations against pneumococcal disease (PCV3) and rotavirus (complete series; RotaC) and a second dose of the measles vaccine (MCV2), saw continued increases globally during the COVID-19 pandemic due to ongoing introductions and scale-ups, but at slower rates than expected in the absence of the pandemic. Forecasts to 2030 for DTP3, PCV3, and MCV2 suggest that only DTP3 would reach the IA2030 target of 90% global coverage, and only under an optimistic scenario. The number of zero-dose children, proxied as children younger than 1 year who do not receive DTP1, decreased by 74·9% (95% uncertainty interval 72·1–77·3) globally between 1980 and 2019, with most of those declines reached during the 1980s and the 2000s. After 2019, counts of zero-dose children rose to a COVID 19-era peak of 18·6 million (17·6–20·0) in 2021. Most zero-dose children remain concentrated in conflict-affected regions and those with various constraints on resources available to put towards vaccination services, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. As of 2023, more than 50% of the 15·7 million (14·6–17·0) global zero-dose children resided in just eight countries (Nigeria, India, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Indonesia, and Brazil), emphasising persistent inequities.
Interpretation
Our estimates of current vaccine coverage and forecasts to 2030 suggest that achieving IA2030 targets, such as halving zero-dose children compared with 2019 levels and reaching 90% global coverage for life-course vaccines DTP3, PCV3, and MCV2, will require accelerated progress. Substantial increases in coverage are necessary in many countries and territories, with those in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia facing the greatest challenges. Recent declines will need to be reversed to restore previous coverage levels in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially for DTP1, DTP3, and Pol3. These findings underscore the crucial need for targeted, equitable immunisation strategies. Strengthening primary health-care systems, addressing vaccine misinformation and hesitancy, and adapting to local contexts are essential to advancing coverage. COVID-19 pandemic recovery efforts, such as WHO's Big Catch-Up, as well as efforts to bolster routine services must prioritise reaching marginalised populations and target subnational geographies to regain lost ground and achieve global immunisation goals
Community health needs assessment: findings from a community-university partnership strengthening program on maternal and child health in Pakistan
Background: Pakistan has been progressing at a slow pace in enhancing maternal and child health (MCH) indicators, experiencing some of the poorest pregnancy outcomes globally. In response to the challenges faced at the community level in MCH, a community health needs assessment (CHNA) was undertaken through a community university partnership project. BeStärken+als gesundheitsfördernder Ansatz von Pflegebedürftigen in der ambulanten Regelversorgung
Die Zahl Pflegebedürftiger (PB), die im häuslichen Umfeld versorgt und therapeutisch betreut werden, steigt. Aufgrund des zunehmenden Fachkräftemangels kann der wachsende Bedarf nicht vollständig gedeckt werden. In der Regelversorgung verankerte Alltagsbegleitende (AB), die Aktivitäten zur Unterstützung im Alltag (AUA) durchführen, könnten im Sinne eines gesundheitsfördernden Ansatzes unterstützen. Im Projekt „BeStärken+“ (Bewegen und Stärken: Gesundheitsförderung in der Alltagsbegleitung) werden AB zu evidenzbasierten Aktivitäten, u.a. Bewegungsübungen, fortgebildet, die sie anschließend mit PB zu Hause umsetzen, um deren Wohlbefinden und Selbstständigkeit zu fördern
Summit Allgäu: Produktion 2025
Die Managementkonferenz SUMMIT ALLGÄU Produktion fand 2025 bereits zum dritten Mal statt und hat sich als feste Plattform „von der Industrie für die Industrie“ etabliert. Die begleitende Publikation bündelt die Beiträge der Veranstaltung und greift zentrale Themen des industriellen und gesellschaftlichen Wandels sowie verantwortlichen Handelns auf.
Angesichts tiefgreifender ökologischer, ökonomischer und digitaler Transformationen wird der Dialog zwischen Wirtschaft, Industrie und Unternehmertum als entscheidend hervorgehoben. Produktion wird dabei nicht mehr nur als effiziente Herstellung verstanden, sondern als gestaltendes Element nachhaltiger Wertschöpfung.
Im Fokus stehen neue Denkweisen industrieller Wertschöpfung zwischen Digitalisierung und Dekarbonisierung, globaler Vernetzung und regionaler Verantwortung sowie Effizienz und Resilienz. Besondere Bedeutung kommt der Integration von Mensch, Technik und Daten in lernende Systeme zu.
Unter den Leitthemen „Im Fokus der Zukunft“ und „Die Kraft der Veränderung“ wurden beim SUMMIT 2025 aktuelle Erkenntnisse, visionäre Strategien und praxisnahe Erfahrungen diskutiert. Ziel ist es, den Wandel aktiv und verantwortungsvoll zu gestalten
Grüne Infrastruktur planen, entwickeln und umsetzen: Ein Beitrag zur Alpinen Raumordnung
Der Alpenraum steht vor besonderen Herausforderungen, die internationalen Ziele des Globalen Biodiversitätsrahmens sowie der EU-Verordnung über die Wiederherstellung der Natur („Nature Restoration Law“) umzusetzen. Neben etablierten Bestandteilen räumlicher Planungsdokumente, wie etwa zum Landschaftsschutz oder der Naherholungsvorsorge, drängen ökologische Belange stärker in den Vordergrund. Das Positionspapier aus der länderübergreifenden Arbeitsgruppe des ARL-Forums Bayern versteht das multifunktionale Konzept der „Grünen Infrastruktur“ als gewinnbringenden Zugang, um im Alpenraum eine stärkere Koordinationsrolle der räumlichen Planung für freiraumbezogene Planungen und Maßnahmen zu fordern. Denn bislang fallen sie in die Zuständigkeiten verschiedenster Fachressorts und werden oftmals thematisch isoliert betrachtet und behandelt. Gleichzeitig soll damit auch die Akzeptanz staatlicher Nachhaltigkeitsziele sowie der effektive Einsatz öffentlicher Mittel gefördert werden. Das Positionspapier skizziert die Vision eines leistungsfähigen Netzwerks Grüner Infrastruktur im Alpenraum, welches vor allem die ökologische Vernetzung stärkt und sich auf eine rahmengebende Sicherung durch die Raumplanung stützt. Um dies zu erreichen, werden Handlungsempfehlungen bezüglich der Stärkung des rechtlichen Rahmens, der Eignung von Planungsinstrumenten, der Förderung und Finanzierung von Maßnahmen zur Umsetzung der Grünen Infrastruktur, der Stärkung der ressortübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit sowie der Mobilisierung gesellschaftlicher Akteurinnen und Akteure formuliert
