Human-Robot Interaction in Extreme and Challenging Environments

    No full text
The first workshop on human-robot interaction in extreme and challenging environments (exactingHRI: https://sites.google.com/monash.edu/exactinghril) focuses on the forefront of HRI research in applications where robots are working with diverse users in uncertain, unknown, or risky environments to deliver reliable outcomes in repeated sessions. In these scenarios, a robot's autonomous and interactive functions are put to the test, with errors likely to arise. Such HRI systems require design and evaluation in-situ with target users, i.e., “exacting” HRI. The exactingHRI 2025 workshop aims to bring together researchers that investigate the diverse human, robot, task, environment, and interaction factors that are challenging for state-of-the-art HRI systems, as well as innovative designs, theories, models, and methods that equip people and robots with the ability to address these challenges. Workshop presenters will share lessons they have learned from successful or failed attempts in testing their work in such difficult settings, in a bid to encourage and guide the necessary efforts that progress our field to solve real-world problems

Evaluation of a Node-based Automatic Short Answer Tool “NodeGrade”

    No full text
NodeGrade tries to provide a suitable solution for the problem of time-intensive short answer grading. This research focuses simultaneously on performance, functionality and user experience, which is underlined by a triangulated approach. The evaluation results show comparable performance of NodeGrade on public datasets, even outperforming GPT-4 on the SemEval 2013 Task 7. Matching of NodeGrade’s output with multiple human expert raters reveals some weaknesses regarding cases at the lower and upper boundary. In terms of user experience, the interviewed and observed students recognized both positive facets, like better learning support and helpful feedback, and negative sides, including technical limitations and lack of transparency. Overall, NodeGrade promises high potential for further practical use and testing in the field of software engineering education and automatic short answer grading

    No full text
Specially designed apps for informal carers offer support and relief in various areas of everyday caregiving, but they are not widely used. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive insight into the current market for German-language apps for digital support for family carers. After conducting a systematic, criteria-based review, 36 apps for family caregivers were included. The analysis shows that these care apps mainly offer functions in the areas of information, communication, organisation, coordination, documentation, and service purchases. Based on this, the apps can be characterised according to their range of functions. We examined the extent to which these apps undergo testing or certification procedures or have seals of approval. We also analysed the general availability and accessibility of care apps and the range of their offers, to provide a comprehensive insight into the German-speaking market for digital support for family carers.

Measuring Resilience: A New Perspective on Assessing Production Facilities Through an OEE Based Resilience Metric

    No full text
Measuring the resilience of industrial production facilities during the production is very complex due to the variety of possible influences and interactions. In addition, production systems are characterized by a dynamic environment with increasing adjustments and changes. A metric for measuring the resilience of individual production facilities during usage phase is intended to help overcome these challenges while meeting requirements such as applicability and comparability. The objective of the metric focuses on the evaluation of measures to remedy resilience relevant events. For this purpose, classified events are considered as a total quantity of changes, adjustments and disruptions together with the measures taken, each in isolation with regard to the productivity of a production facility. An adapted OEE approach with the three weighted influencing factors of quality, performance and availability is developed as the basis for evaluating productivity. This approach evaluates quality based on the direct and indirect costs incurred for rework and post-production. Performance is determined by the cycle time of the facility. The time share of value-adding processes in the period under review is evaluated as a measure of availability. Including the time parameter, which is recorded alongside the resilience event, the metric results in a comparable resilience value. By classifying the event in terms of speed of occurrence and degree of awareness, it is possible to derive the characteristics of adaptability, innovation capability, robustness and improvisation capability of a production facility. In addition, the resilience value determined enables further analysis and the application of resilience strategies

Which estimates can we trust when estimating body surface potential maps from the standard 12- lead ECG? A modeling approach

    No full text
Background The estimation of body surface potentials (BSPs) from the 12‑lead ECG using linear ECG lead transformations is performed in various applications. The quality of these transformations is typically evaluated by quantifying the waveform similarity between the estimated and actual recorded BSPs. However, variations in cardiac electrical activity are known to influence this similarity. We introduce an alternative, model-based approach that measures the similarity between the estimated and actual BSPs using spatial information content rather than waveform similarity

FHA-Model Based Comparison of Different Control Techniques for Wireless Power Transfer Systems

    No full text
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is a technology that is becoming increasingly important. For example, it is used for charging consumer electronics such as smartphones to enhance convenience but also for battery electric vehicles to improve their availability and range. Many different control strategies have already been investigated for WPT systems and their feasibility have been proven. This paper presents a comparison of 3 different control strategies based on the First Harmonic Approach (FHA) model. The main variables considered are the primary and secondary resonance tank currents, as these are either linear or quadratic in any power transfer system losses. Therefore, it gives insight into which operation strategy offers a higher or lower efficiency or allows a reduction in component stress. To provide a basic insight into these control strategies which offer different control parameters, they are briefly introduced. Since these parameters as well as the compensation in the resonance tanks are decisive for the performance of the system, the selection of these quantities is done by optimization. These optimization problems are also addressed in this paper

Statistical Evaluation of Reaction and Movement Times in Pneumatic Systems for Sequential Control Optimization

    No full text
The reaction time of pneumatic cylinders is an important factor in optimizing industrial manufacturing processes. This study statistically analyzes reaction and movement times, considering mechanical influences and communication latencies based on sensor data acquired via OPC UA. Due to high repeatability and small variations, a purely distribution-based approach is insufficient, as no consistent statistical distribution could be confirmed. A hybrid characterization using normal distribution and quantiles is proposed. The results support adaptive control strategies to optimize cycle times
