Deep space optical communications (DSOC) downlink simulation with varying PPM order

    Get PDF
During the course of a typical deep space mission like the Mars Earth mission, there exist a wide range of operating points, due to the different changes in geometry that consequently cause different link budgets in terms of received signal and noise power. These changes include distance range, Sun-Earth-Probe angle, zenith angle and atmospheric conditions. The different operating points, with different losses (background noise, pointing losses and atmospheric losses), lead to different capacities and data rates over the course of a typical deep space mission. Consequently, different engineering parameters are adjusted and optimized to combat some of these varying losses in order to get acceptable data rates and bit error probabilities. This is a useful reason to analyze and simulate various operating conditions that occur with the varying spatial orbital time periods of the resulting received signal power level, noise power level, capacity, data rates and bit error probabilities. This paper details results of simulations of typical deep space optical communication link operation

Fuel Effects in Turbulent Premixed Pre-vaporised Alcohol/Air Jet Flames

    Get PDF
To study combustion fundamentals of complex fuels under well-defined boundary conditions, a novel Temperature Controlled Jet Burner (TCJB) system is designed that can stabilise both gaseous or pre-vaporised liquid fuels. In a first experimental exploratory study, piloted turbulent jet flames of pre-vaporised methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and 2-butanol mixtures are compared to methane/air as a reference fuel. Complementary one-dimensional laminar flame calculations are used to provide flame parameters for comparison. Blow-off and flame length as global flame characteristics are measured over a wide range of equivalence ratios. For fuel rich conditions, blow-off limits correlate well with extinction strain rate calculations. Differing flame lengths from lean to rich conditions are explained partly by different flame wrinkling that is assessed using planar laser-induced fluorescence imaging of the hydroxyl radical (OH-PLIF). A study of Lewis-number effects indicates that they have substantial influence on flame wrinkling. Lean alcohol/air flames, opposed to methane/air, have a Lewis-number greater than unity. This impedes curvature development, which promotes relatively large flame lengths. In contrast, across stoichiometric conditions, all alcohol/air mixture Lewis-numbers decrease significantly. At such conditions, alcohol/air flames show alike or even larger wrinkling compared to methane/air flames. However, quantitatively, the differences in flame length and wrinkling observed among the flames can neither be explained alone by Lewis-number differences, nor other global mixture parameters available from 1D laminar flame calculations. This study shall therefore emphasise the need for more detailed experimental analyses of the full thermochemical state of laminar and turbulent flames fuelled with complex fuels

Breathing life into consumer rights: smartphone tools facilitating the “right to know” on substances of very high concern in REACH articles

    Get PDF
Abstract Background The EU chemicals regulation “Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals” (REACH) aims to reduce the usage of substances of very high concern (SVHCs) by firms. Therefore, a consumer right-to-know about SVHCs in articles is intended to create market-based incentives. However, awareness of the right-to-know among EU citizens is low. Moreover, the response window of 45 days afforded to suppliers impedes immediate, informed decisions by consumers. Consequently, despite being in effect for more than 10 years, only few consumer send requests. Civil society actors have developed smartphone applications reducing information search costs, allowing users to send right-to-know requests upon scanning an article’s barcode. Answers are stored in a database and made available to the public immediately. This paper assesses to which extent smartphone tools contribute to an increased use of the right-to-know by undertaking a case study of the application “ToxFox” by the German non-profit organisation Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND). Results An analysis of the data from the BUND database for the period 2016 to 2018 reveals that about 20 thousand users have sent almost 49 thousand requests. This has led to more than 9 thousand database entries, including 189 articles which contain SVHCs above the legal threshold. The data also indicate that receiving information on requested articles encourages further use of the application. Many suppliers accept the application and pro-actively provide information on articles without SVHCs above the threshold. However, most consumers use the application only for a short time, and suppliers are struggling to reply to right-to-know requests. Conclusion Evaluating the results, the study identifies options to enhance the application’s design in terms of user motivation and legal certainty, and to enhance the framework governing "barcode" assignments to articles with a view to better contributing to transparency. As for policy implications, a lack of consumer requests can in part be traced back to design flaws of the right-to-know and a lack of implementation and enforcement of REACH. In addition, suppliers have to increase their supply chain communication efforts to make sure they are in a position to properly answer consumer requests. We recommend several policy options addressing these and additional aspects, thus contributing to the legislative review of Art. 33 REACH

Iterative Potts Minimization for the Recovery of Signals with Discontinuities from Indirect Measurements: The Multivariate Case

    Get PDF
Signals and images with discontinuities appear in many problems in such diverse areas as biology, medicine, mechanics and electrical engineering. The concrete data are often discrete, indirect and noisy measurements of some quantities describing the signal under consideration. A frequent task is to find the segments of the signal or image which corresponds to finding the discontinuities or jumps in the data. Methods based on minimizing the piecewise constant Mumford–Shah functional—whose discretized version is known as Potts energy—are advantageous in this scenario, in particular, in connection with segmentation. However, due to their non-convexity, minimization of such energies is challenging. In this paper, we propose a new iterative minimization strategy for the multivariate Potts energy dealing with indirect, noisy measurements. We provide a convergence analysis and underpin our findings with numerical experiments
