Fallstudie: ABB – Eine Marke in Bewegung gebracht
(Diese Fallstudie wurde in Anlehnung an Heidig et al. [ABB – A brand in movement: Branding challenges of a global business-to-business company, Universität St. Gallen, St. Gallen, 2013]. ABB – A Brand in Movement. erarbeitet.)
What is the value of Facebook? Evidence from the Schwartz/Moon model
Purpose
On May 17, 2012, the social networking company Facebook Inc. fixes its initial public offering (IPO) price at 26.53, which exceeded the market price per share of $22.66 by 22.48 per cent, but was far less than the IPO stock price. The subsequent sensitivity analysis reveals the robustness of the result to key input parameters.
Originality/value
The results raise doubts about the IPO price of Facebook. Furthermore, this paper is of value from a more conceptual perspective in that an extended version of the Schwartz/Moon model is provided. Beyond extensions previously discussed in the subject-based literature, the authors include stochastic interest rates (as an additional source of uncertainty) and investigate their valuation effects
A methodological approach for the on-site quantification of food losses in primary production: Austrian and German case studies using the example of potato harvest
In the last decade, in many European Countries more and more measures have been initiated aiming at the prevention of food losses and wastes along the entire value chain. In order to evaluate or monitor such important measures it is crucial to obtain quantitative information on generated food waste amounts, subsequently enabling the quantitative evaluation of the measure’s outcomes and efficiency. Currently there is a paucity of quantitative information, particularly on food losses that are directly generated during harvesting processes. Up to date, no method is available or standardised aiming at the in-situ or on-site quantification of food losses during harvest. Using the example of the potato harvest, this study presents a practical approach for determining potato losses. To test the applicability of the developed method, on-site measurements were conducted directly on the field at five different locations in Austria and Germany. Our method enables the quantification of food losses based on defined areas along the harvested potato rows, where the analyser manually collects potatoes during their harvest. Hereby, two types of potato losses needs to be considered: non-harvested, under-sized potatoes that remain under the earth and the harvested ones, which are rejected on-site because of quality requirements regarding their size, shape, and state of health. Our study shows that between 1 and 9% of field losses (based on yield potential) can be generated during the potato harvest. In future, this method may be the basis for standardised protocols in order to be able to derive cultivar-specific benchmarks and, consequently, to develop measures for preventing food losses. In general, more case studies and evidence-based ground-up measurements on other cultivars and for other regions are needed focusing on the on-site quantification of post-harvest losses

Development of a modelling and simulation methodology for hierarchical energy system scenarios
In the context of renewable energies, precise and reliable forecasts are necessary to ensure a sustainable and economic operation of energy systems. This paper presents a methodology and environment that allows modelling, simulation and analysis of decentralized and heterogeneous energy system scenarios on a virtual level. An essential requirement for the modelling and simulation of complex network scenarios is a capable abstraction strategy, which allows hierarchical clustering and interaction of several network levels. The approach presented in this contribution provides mechanisms that allow a realistic modelling of complex energy system scenarios covering several network levels, taking into account the specific components, interactions and relationships that exist at each level (e.g. specific electrical lines etc.). The simulation follows a hierarchical tree-based approach, which allows to integrate already existing simulation models into the environment and to generate only a small overhead over the simulation run time. As we can show, the developed environment not only serves as an excellent basis for analysis and optimization purposes but also for the application of artificial intelligence techniques, as it supports the effective generation of training data and verification of optimization results

Bewegungstechnik

Use of the Weibull distribution function for describing cleaning kinetics of high pressure water jets in food industry
The Weibull distribution function can be used to describe cleaning kinetics of high pressure water jets. This function has been proposed previously to describe the soil removal of heat exchangers in milk industry during CIP processes. Weibull distribution function can be applied to model different types of kinetics by use of two parameters. Thus, characteristic cleaning times can be calculated more precisely than using an exponential function. This is necessary for proper simulation of the cleaning process of machines and equipment in food industry. Experimental trials were performed in cleaning milk protein soil from stainless steel plates with pressures from 20 to 60 bar at temperatures of 30–50 °C. In many cases, experimental data could be described equally well using an exponential function, but in specific cases, e.g. at low pressure (20 bar) or low temperature (30 °C), the Weibull distribution function resulted in much better fit
