    Food literacy in families: Competencies, needs and optimization potential

    Ernährungskompetenz in Familien ist entscheidend, um ernährungsmitbedingte Erkrankungen zu vermeiden. Allerdings sind die Kompetenzen begrenzt, ebenso deren Transfer in den Familienalltag. Basierend auf der Analyse der Nutzung eines Rezeptbuches für Familien wird untersucht, welche Kompetenzbereiche im Alltag umgesetzt werden, und welche Ansätze geeignet sind, den Praxistransfer zu fördern. Internet und Kochbücher werden am häufigsten als Quellen für Rezepte und für den Kompetenzerwerb genutzt. Besonderes Interesse besteht in den Bereichen Speisenplanung, Zubereitung und Essverhalten. Kindliche Partizipation findet v. a. passiv im Zuge der Speisenplanung statt. Abendessen und Wochenend-Mahlzeiten bieten Potential, um aktive Partizipation und Kompetenzerwerb bei Kindern zu steigern.Food literacy in families is essential to prevent diet-related diseases. The competencies in food and nutrition are limited, as is their transfer into everyday life. Based on the analysis of the usage of a recipe book for families it is investigated which competencies are implemented in everyday life, and which approaches are suitable to promote further transfer. Internet and cookbooks are the most frequently used sources for recipes and competence acquisition. There is particular interest in the areas of meal planning, preparation and eating behavior. Participation of children is mainly passive in the course of meal planning. Dinner and weekend meals offer potential to increase children’s active participation and competence acquisition

    Smart technologies and textiles and their potential use and application in the care and support of elderly individuals: A systematic review

    Demographic change is causing society to age. At the same time, technological progress is changing the way ageing individuals are cared for and medically treated. Several smart wearables and garments have recently been developed for this purpose. Based on previous research, we see a research gap in the use of smart clothing in the care and support of elderly people, especially with regard to concrete application potentials and example products. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the latest studies and developments in smart clothing with a focus on usability and acceptance for an elderly individuals. A systematic literature search was performed in five databases using a predefined set of keyword. A total of 169 articles published between 1/2000 and 2/2023 were identified and assessed. The literature search followed a previously prepared research protocol according to the criteria of a systematic literature search. The research field of smart clothing is expanding with smart shirts being a major focus; however other products are also being investigated, each with specific capabilities. In particular, vital parameters are constantly optimized; representative products are described and assessed according to their potential applicability to elderly people. The future applications of smart clothing in health care are promising. Many studies on basic applications of smart textiles have been done, and some studies have already involved older people. Furthermore, newly developed suggestions for possible categorizations of smart wearables as well as smart clothing as a subtype are presented based on the researched literature. We found an overall positive impression of the development and application of smart clothing, especially in geriatric settings. However, aspects such as data collection, skin compatibility, wearing comfort, and integration of geriatric factors into known acceptance models need further investigation. Over the last two decades, there have been many developments in the field of smart clothing. For the care and support of elderly people, smart clothing is an important development with great potential. Continued advancement in these products is needed to adequately address the special needs of older people

    Enzyme indicators for H2O2 biodecontamination

    In the context of the increasing relevance of biopharmaceuticals and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP), isolator technology is gaining in importance. To provide an aseptic production environment H2O2 biodecontamination of isolators is used. In addition to chemical indicators (CI) and biological indicators (BI), enzyme indicators (EI) are an innovative and promising addition for assessing the efficiency of H2O2 biodecontamination. The principle here is the denaturation of an enzyme by the action of H2O2 with subsequent quantification of the residual enzyme activity via adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence. Studies confirm the correlation of BI and EI results after H2O2 exposure. It can be assumed that the use of EI will find its way into standards and pharmaceutical regulations in the future. However, to prove the equivalence or superiority of the method regarding contamination control, a general database is first required.     Neural auto-association with optimal Bayesian learning.

    Neural associative memories are single layer perceptrons with fast synaptic learning typically storing discrete associations between pairs of neural activity patterns. Previous works have analyzed the optimal networks under naive Bayes assumptions of independent pattern components and heteroassociation, where the task is to learn associations from input to output patterns. Here I study the optimal Bayesian associative network for auto-association where input and output layers are identical. In particular, I compare performance to different variants of approximate Bayesian learning rules, like the BCPNN (Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network), and try to explain why sometimes the suboptimal learning rules achieve higher storage capacity than the (theoretically) optimal model. It turns out that performance can depend on subtle dependencies of input components violating the ``naive Bayes'' assumptions. This includes patterns with constant number of active units, iterative retrieval where patterns are repeatedly propagated through recurrent networks, and winners-take-all activation of the most probable units. Performance of all learning rules can improve significantly if they include a novel adaptive mechanism to estimate noise in iterative retrieval steps (ANE). The overall maximum storage capacity is achieved again by the Bayesian learning rule with ANE
