    Tabletop Exercise for Ransomware Negotiations

    Ransomware has grown to become one of the most significant cyber threats to organizations worldwide. In the event of an attack, many victims choose to pay in order to restore their systems or prevent stolen data from being published or sold. If this decision is made, organizations should consider entering into negotiations with the attackers, as ransoms are often negotiable. It is important that relevant personnel are prepared for such negotiations. The aim of this work is to evaluate how Tabletop Exercises can be used to prepare for possible Ransomware Negotiations. A concept for Tabletop Exercises is developed, which is slightly adapted to the requirements of Ransomware Negotiation Training. The main modification involves the inclusion of an adversarial team in the exercise, representing the attackers or ransomware operators. This will provide participants with the opportunity to negotiate with an opponent who will react to their actions in a spontaneous and unpredictable manner. A basic model for designing a Tabletop Exercise in this format is provided, supplemented by an exemplary scenario for a Ransomware Negotiation Tabletop Exercise

    Stated purchase of bio-based products: Personal and regional factors in Germany

    A successful transformation to an economy less dependent on fossil resources requires consumers’ willingness to buy bio-based products. Therefore, it is essential to understand which factors determine their preferences. Using a large-scale online survey representative of the German population at the sub-national level, this study in� vestigates to what extent personal and regional macro-economic factors are associated with consumers’ mean stated purchase for various bio-based products. Results of the regression analysis reveal that personal factors, such as economic preferences, universal moral values, and individual factors related to climate change perception, climate policy support, and civic engagement to fight climate change, are statistically significantly associated with consumers’ stated bio-based purchases. The influence of regional characteristics (e.g., GDP, employment sectors, and climate change) is weaker and less consistent. The study draws a holistic picture of the factors that determine consumers’ preferences regarding the purchase of bio-based products. Additionally, the study contributes to theory, as it is the first one applying comprehensive measured economic preferences and moral foundations in the context of bio-based purchases. The findings imply the need for target-specific ap� proaches to also reach those less engaged and unlikely to be convinced by general communication measures

    Nature as blueprint: Global phenotype engineering of CHO production cells based on a multi-omics comparison with plasma cells

    Especially for the production of artificial, difficult to express molecules a further development of the CHO production cell line is required to keep pace with the continuously increasing demands. However, the identification of novel targets for cell line engineering to improve CHO cells is a time and cost intensive process. Since plasma cells are evolutionary optimized for a high antibody expression in mammals, we performed a comprehensive multi-omics comparison between CHO and plasma cells to exploit optimized cellular production traits. Comparing the transcriptome, proteome, miRNome, surfaceome and secretome of both cell lines identified key differences including 392 potential overexpression targets for CHO cell engineering categorized in 15 functional classes like transcription factors, protein processing or secretory pathway. In addition, 3 protein classes including 209 potential knock-down/out targets for CHO engineering were determined likely to affect aggregation or proteolysis. For production phenotype engineering, several of these novel targets were successfully applied to transient and transposase mediated overexpression or knock-down strategies to efficiently improve productivity of CHO cells. Thus, substantial improvement of CHO productivity was achieved by taking nature as a blueprint for cell line engineering

    Improvement of bioanalytical parameters through automation: suitability of a hand-like robotic system

    Commercial automation systems for small- and medium-sized laboratories, including research environments, are often complex to use. For liquid handling systems (LHS), development is required not only for the robot’s movements but also for adapting the bioanalytical method to the automated system. This study investigates whether a more human-like automation strategy—using a robotic system (RS)—is more suitable for research laboratories than a professional automation approach utilizing a commercial automated LHS. We conducted a series of measurements for protein determination using a Bradford assay manually, with a fully automated LHS, and with our human-like RS. Although the hand-like RS approach requires more than twice the time of the LHS, it achieved the best standard deviation in this setup (RS = 0.5, manual = 0.71, LHS = 0.86). Due to the low limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ), most protein samples could be quantified with the RS (samples below LOQ = 9.7%, LOD = 0.23; LOQ = 0.25) compared to manual (samples below LOQ = 28.8%, LOD = 0.24; LOQ = 0.26) and the LHS (samples below LOQ = 36.1%, LOD = 0.27; LOQ = 0.31). In another time-dependent enzymatic assay test, the RS achieved results comparable to the manual method and the LHS, although the required time could be a constraint for short incubation times. Our results demonstrate that a more hand-like automation system closely models the manual process, leading easier to accurate bioanalytical results. We conclude that such a system could be more suitable for typical research environments than a complex LHS

    Consumers' responses to rising food prices in Germany

    The food price inflation in 2022 has put considerable pressure on some consumers, leading to changes in their food choice and consumption behavior. To gain a better understanding of consumers' responses to rising food prices, we conducted an online survey among 1000 consumers in Germany, in which they were asked to self-report the extent of their changes during a period from the beginning of 2022 to November 2022. A principal component analysis was conducted to summarize the queried items into three factors, which were subsequently used for a cluster analysis. The emerging clusters were characterized in terms of sociodemographic as well as psychographic variables, namely locus of control, life satisfaction, optimism, pessimism, human values, and food values. The segment that appears to be most affected by rising food prices consists of about 28% of the sample’s respondents and is characterized by a strong engagement in saving behaviors. These consumers are less satisfied with their lives and more pessimistic, corresponding to their lower incomes and lower likelihood to be fully employed. Communication and policy measures need to be designed in a way that these consumers regain stability and become more confident about the future

    The project "BUSINESS | Bio-Bauernhof Speise-Eis in recycelbaren Kunststoffverpackungen aus Agrar-Reststoffen" focuses on creating a market-ready, recyclable ice cream cup made from biobased Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF). This initiative is spearheaded by the Sustainable Packaging Institute (SPI) in collaboration with the University of Hohenheim, Peter Vogel, and ARBURG. Supported by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the project aims to leverage agricultural residues as a raw material for developing sustainable packaging solutions. Ice cream packaging, typically made from single-use fossil-based plastics, is a prime candidate for sustainable alternatives. PEF, a highly functional biopolymer, offers a promising solution due to its superior material efficiency and recyclability without compromising food protection
