    Information Requirements for Data-Driven Upgrade Engineering to Enable an Upgrade Circular Economy

    In today’s environment, organizations face mounting challenges to reconcile eco-nomic efficiency with ecological responsibility and social sustainability. Upgrade Engineering offers a promising alternative to traditional maintenance strategies by combining technical upgrades with broader organizational and strategic sustaina-bility goals. Through a qualitative and exploratory research design that includes in-depth expert interviews across various industrial sectors and a systematic liter-ature review, a lifecycle-based information model was developed. This model de-scribes the information and data needs from the planning stage through construc-tion, usage, and improvement phases. The findings reveal that adopting an inte-grated data infrastructure that captures both quantitative sensor readings and qual-itative expert feedback is essential for effective decision-making and continuous improvement. The study concludes with practical recommendations and empha-sizes the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration. Future research should fur-ther investigate interrelationships between the information collected in the plant life cycle phases and the technical, economic, and social dimensions of Upgrade Engineering in order to be able to steer upgrade decisions even more effectively

    The success of digital transformation initiatives relies heavily on effective digital leadership, which requires a blend of human-centric traits and technical expertise. While digital technologies enable transformation, organizations must develop leaders with the skills to navigate the complexities of change, foster innovation, and align strategies with organizational goals. Despite the growing importance of digital leadership, there is a lack of standardized, validated tools to measure and assess digital leadership competencies systematically. This study introduces the Digital Leadership Scale (DLS), a validated self-assessment tool designed to measure a leader’s ability across seven human-centric dimensions essential for digital transformation: Positive Attitude, Ethical AI Use, Growth Mindset, Track Record, Transparent Agenda, Skills Acquisition, and Participative Style. The DLS serves as a practical tool for leaders to engage in self-reflection, identify strengths and development areas, and adopt personalized learning strategies. Organizations can leverage this scale to cultivate a digitally proficient workforce and foster leadership capabilities aligned with digital transformation success

    Continuous value shaping

    Technological advancements and evolving value orientations reshape future value creation and pose new requirements for service innovation. While a variety of disciplines are developing new approaches to drive service innovation, this is primarily done in isolation and generates only fragmented solutions. Sociological theory has proposed “boundary objects” as an effective umbrella for communication and cooperation among communities. Therefore, we introduce continuous value shaping (CVS) as a boundary object describing service innovation approaches along five principles. We reflect on this concept through the different disciplinary lenses of researchers in service marketing, information systems, service engineering, sociology of work, and innovation management. These perspectives highlight how the CVS principles already connect to discourses within the individual disciplines. However, the CVS concept will not only provide an umbrella to embrace existing activities in different academic disciplines. It also assists to identify research themes that will benefit from uniting the power of these disciplines, and it can serve as an integrating framework to conceptualize complex service innovation approaches. Thus, the CVS concept should guide both researchers and practitioners to develop and implement novel innovation and transformation efforts—in and across organizations

    Supporting Strategic Decision Making for Data Monetization in the Era of Digital Transformation

    Unlocking the value of data remains one of the most pressing and promising strategic challenges in the age of digital transformation. While data is widely recognized as a key asset, many organizations still face difficulties in converting its potential into tangible business value. This paper presents a research-based framework for data monetization strategies, developed through literature review, expert input, and ecosystem analysis. To support practical application, the framework is complemented by a diagnostic questionnaire that helps organizations assess their current capabilities and reflect on suitable strategic directions. Designed for early-stage use, the tool fosters alignment between monetization efforts and the company’s transformation context. The approach was developed within the EU-funded DATAMITE project and contributes to advancing strategy development in industrial data use and digital production management

    Analysis of company characteristics for the selection of suitable supply chain networks for value-retention circular economy strategies
