A key challenge for research projects is the sustainable dissemination of project results in order to create value for their target groups in the long term. For this reason, the consortium of the GALA project, which receives funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is currently working intensively on the basis of research and workshops to establish a business model for its continuation beyond the initial project period. For this purpose, methods proven in innovation research are being used, which are introduced in the present article

How to Acquire Customers for Subscription Business Models in Machinery and Plant Engineering

    No full text
To monetize the potential of digitalization in times of saturated markets, increased machinery and plant engineering companies are starting to transform the transaction-based business model into a customer- and service-oriented subscription business. Even though subscription offerings can create win-win situations for providers and customers, companies encounter significant difficulties in acquiring customers for this innovative business model. Historically linear acquisition processes focused on transactional product sales impede success. To identify key challenges and targeted coping strategies for customer acquisition we conducted in-depth interviews with 18 subscription managers and sales representatives from seven machinery and plant engineering case studies. In our research we uncovered four challenge dimensions: (1) lack of motivation, (2) missing skills and competences, (3) insufficient customer confidence and (4) transaction-oriented sales approach. Beyond that we derived four appropriate coping strategies (1) steering mechanisms, (2) human resource management, (3) trust building instruments and (4) systematic methodology to address them. These insights highlight the key challenges at the management level for customer acquisition that companies face when trying to initiate and sustain the transition from a purely transactional product and service business to subscription-oriented growth. Furthermore, they provide guidance how to cope with these challenges

Digitalization offers companies strategic advantages through the simplification and optimization of business procedures and is an important lever for long-term growth. Numerous industries already benefit from optimized coordination of capacities and resources by integrating digital technologies into business processess. Digital platforms enable, e. g. the demand-based adjustment of asset capacities at peak loads on the basis of data-based forecasts. In particular, small and medium sized enterprises in the German quarrying indsutry have so far been denied access to such technologies due to high investment and operating costs, high implementation efforts and heterogeneous machine fleets. This paper presentes the functions of the data-centric platform demonstrator " PROmining" developed in an AiF research project and validates them using case studies in the industry. The platform demonstrator offers marginally digitalised companies a tool with functions ranging from simple operational data collection, the evaluation of capacity utilization, to scenario development for regional demand, which can be used as a blueprint within their own company. Thus, companies in the quarrying sector are provided with a low-effort entry into the digital transformation and a contributio to long-term competitiveness.

A Framework for Leveraging Twin Transition in the Manufacturing Industry

    No full text
The manufacturing industry consumes 54% of global energy and attributes for 20% of global CO2 emissions, demonstrating the industry’s role as global driver of climate change. Therefore, reducing its carbon footprint has become a major challenge as its current energy and resource consumption are not sustainable. Industrie 4.0 presents a chance to transform the prevailing paradigms of industrial value creation and advance sustainable developments. By using information and communication technologies for the intelligent networking of machines and processes, it has the potential to reduce energy and material consumption and is considered a key contributor to sustainable manufacturing as proclaimed by the European Commission in the term “twin transition”. As organizations still struggle to utilize the potential of Industrie 4.0 for a sustainable transformation, this paper presents a framework to successfully align their own twin transition. The framework is built upon three key design principles (micro level: leverage eco-efficient operations, meso level: facilitate circularity and macro level: foster value co-creation) derived using case study research by Eisenhardt, and four structural dimensions (resources, information systems, organizational structure and culture) based on the acatech Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index. Eleven interconnected areas of action are defined within the framework and offer a holistic and practical approach on how to leverage an organization’s twin transition. Within the conducted research, the framework was applied to the challenge of information quality and transparency required for high-value secondary plastics in the manufacturing industry. The result is a digital platform design that enables information transactions for secondary plastics and establishes a circular ecosystem. This shows the applicability of the framework and its potential to facilitate a structured approach for designing twin transitions in the manufacturing industry

Stagnating demand for new machinery and equipment is leading companies in the industry to look for new business models to monetize their products and services. A promising approach in this context the “Netflix of the Industry” by introducing a so-called Subscription Business Model (SBM) that provides targeted support in this area. Implementing such a model, the provider offers its customers a solution in the form of a product-service system and receives regular payments in return. However, the implementation of these business models involves challenges due to thecapital-intensive prefinancing and current lack of evaluation methods to determine for which customers such a model could be profitably implemented. In the ‘SCALA’ project, a subscription business case calculator is developed that will enable companies to focus specifically on profitable SBM and thus take an important step towards becoming the ”Netflix of the Industry“

Crisis situations can lead to extreme consequences for society and the economy, such as the disruption of supply chains and the collapse of critical infrastructure. The challenge for optimal crisis preparation lies in the unpredictability of causes, duration and scope, and severity. AI-based resilience services can aid in crisis preparation by providing software-based warnings, recommendations, and countermeasures. The aim of this paper is to present a method for evaluating such services in terms of their usefulness and acceptance. A questionnaire is presented, and the results of its piloting phase are disseminated. With these results, existing and projected AI-based services for crisis prevention can be evaluated
