    Optimizing river restoration:A multi-scenario approach to barrier removal prioritization

    River barriers can disrupt connectivity, sediment transport, water flow, and biodiversity, leading to widespread degradation of river ecosystems. Hence, the EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL) urges river connectivity restoration by removing barriers. However, its implementation requires robust, data-driven prioritization strategies. In this study, we apply a multi-scenario spatial optimization framework using multi-criteria decision analysis to prioritize barrier removal across seven conservation scenarios-focusing on biodiversity enhancement, erosion reduction, and human impact mitigation-within the Morava sub-basin of the Danube Basin. Our findings reveal substantial variability in prioritization across scenarios, driven by differing costs. At the same time, certain areas consistently emerge as high priority, indicating their role in improving connectivity and riparian restoration. Removing barriers in these areas could restore up to 1011 km of free-flowing river length and 604 ha of riparian zones. These results provide actionable insights for identifying areas that maximize ecological benefits while minimizing socio-economic trade-offs, supporting effective restoration planning. Despite the utility of this approach, challenges remain, particularly the lack of high-resolution data for small and undocumented barriers and the exclusion of smaller streams. Expanding this analysis to basin-wide scales and incorporating detailed datasets-such as sediment dynamics and climate change scenarios-will refine future outcomes. Additionally, transboundary coordination will be essential to achieve the NRL's target of 25,000 km of free-flowing rivers. This study highlights the trade-offs between ecological restoration and socio-economic constraints, demonstrating how scenario-based spatial optimization provides a structured framework for balancing these priorities.</p

    Fecal microbiota transplantation from a healthy pouch donor for chronic pouchitis:a proof-of-concept study

    Chronic pouchitis is a common complication after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) with limited treatment options. In this case series, we aimed to investigate clinical and microbiome changes, as well as adverse events, associated with using fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from a donor with a normal functioning IPAA to induce remission in patients with chronic pouchitis. Methods The study was a case-series including a 4-week intervention period and 12-month follow-up. Patients with chronic pouchitis who met the inclusion criteria were recruited from the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark. Participants received FMT derived from a donor with a normal functioning IPAA. Treatment was administered by enema daily for two weeks, then every other day for two more weeks. Disease severity and quality of life (QoL) were accessed at baseline and 30-day follow-up. Clinical remission was defined as Pouchitis Disease Activity Index (PDAI) &lt;7. Fecal samples from participants, healthy donors, and the IPAA donor were analyzed using shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Results Three patients with chronic pouchitis were included and completed the treatment protocol and follow-up visits. At the 30-day follow-up, all participants achieved clinical remission with reduced endoscopic inflammation. The median total PDAI score decreased from 8 (range 10–8) at baseline to 6 (range 6–5) at 30 days. Two participants reported improved QoL, while one reported no change. Few mild, self-limited adverse events were reported by all participants during treatment, with no serious events. Principal component analysis of fecal samples distinguished two clusters: healthy donors and the IPAA donor, with participant samples forming a separate cluster Conclusion We observed that all participants achieved clinical remission with reduced endoscopic inflammation following a 4-week FMT intervention. Adverse events were mild and self-limited. Metagenomic analysis revealed distinct microbiome clusters between IPAA donor and recipients, both of which differed from those of healthy donors.</p

    Enhancing Glucose Level Prediction of ICU Patients through Hierarchical Modeling of Irregular Time-Series

    Accurately predicting blood glucose (BG) levels of ICU patients is critical, as both hypoglycemia (BG &lt; 70 mg/dL) and hyperglycemia (BG &gt; 180 mg/dL) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This study presents a proof-of-concept machine learning framework, the Multi-source Irregular Time-Series Transformer (MITST), designed to predict BG levels in ICU patients. In contrast to existing methods that rely heavily on manual feature engineering or utilize limited Electronic Health Record (EHR) data sources, MITST integrates diverse clinical data—including laboratory results, medications, and vital signs—without predefined aggregation. The model leverages a hierarchical Transformer architecture, designed to capture interactions among features within individual timestamps, temporal dependencies across different timestamps, and semantic relationships across multiple data sources. Evaluated using the extensive eICU database (200,859 ICU stays across 208 hospitals), MITST achieves a statistically significant (p&lt;0.001) average improvement of 1.7 percentage points (pp) in AUROC and 1.8 pp in AUPRC over a state-of-the-art random forest baseline. Crucially, for hypoglycemia—a rare but life-threatening condition—MITST increases sensitivity by 7.2 pp, potentially enabling hundreds of earlier interventions across ICU populations. The flexible architecture of MITST allows seamless integration of new data sources without retraining the entire model, enhancing its adaptability for clinical decision support. While this study focuses on predicting BG levels, we also demonstrate MITST's ability to generalize to a distinct clinical task (in-hospital mortality prediction), highlighting its potential for broader applicability in ICU settings. MITST thus offers a robust and extensible solution for analyzing complex, multi-source, irregular time-series data.</p

    PrivEval: a tool for interactive evaluation of privacy metrics in synthetic data generation

    Synthetic data generation (SDG) is the process of generating a new synthetic dataset based on the statistical properties of a confidential existing dataset. Differential privacy is the property of a SDG mechanism that establishes how protected individuals whose sensitive data is part of the confidential dataset are, when sharing such data. To ensure a SDG is differentially private, noise is injected into the statistics learned from the dataset. Depending on the amount of noise injected, we witness a trade-off between privacy and utility. Privacy is then measured via a set of privacy metrics that usually establish a lower bound on a few aspects of the privacy-utility trade-off. Therefore, it is not possible to assess privacy based only on one metric. To close this gap, we demonstrate PrivEval, a tool to assist users in evaluating the privacy properties of a synthetic dataset. PrivEval implements several privacy metrics and validates them on both a single user and the overall dataset. Besides, PrivEval checks assumptions behind each metric. Hence, PrivEval is a first step to bridge the gap between privacy experts and the general public to make privacy estimation more transparent.</p

    GMPPT Algorithm Based Maximum Power Tracking under Dynamic Weather Conditions Employing Krill-Herd Technique

    As solar energy extraction becomes more and more popular, attempts are made to further improve the efficiency and reliability of such systems. At the time of partially shaded conditions, the peak power that can be extracted from the PV modules may be more, but the conventional control algorithms may result in the underutilization of the panel. The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms like Perturb and Observance (P&amp;O), Incremental Conductance, and other conventional methods fail to detect the global maximum power point (GMPP). In such conditions, a GMPP algorithm is recommended. This paper proposes a new GMPP algorithm called Krill-Herd (K-H) to augment the performance of PV modules with non-uniform irradiations. Krill is a marine animal, and researchers have shown keen interest in this herd due to its ability to form large swarms. The hardware experimentation with a highly efficient Interleaved Boost Converter (IBC) with GaN devices under different partially shaded conditions is used to validate the proposed algorithm. IBC has many advantages over conventional boost converters such as low input current ripple, high efficiency, fast transient response, and improved reliability, less current stress on switching devices, and reduction in filter size. The K-H algorithm shows improved performance over the conventional P&amp;O based algorithms with no oscillations around peak power point, less time to reach steady-state, less power loss, more accuracy, and fewer numbers of iterations. Five different conditions of operation of the panels in real time applications have been considered and is demonstrated that higher efficiency levels of around 99% could be obtained using the K-H algorithm in all these cases.</p

    Intersektionalitet er et bredt anvendt begreb og koncept med afsæt i amerikansk sort feminisme, aktivisme og jurastudier. Det er blevet en vigtig metodisk tilgang og et analytisk perspektiv inden for mange akademiske discipliner og studier og er ikke til at komme udenom, når emner som ulighed, køn, race, religion og diskrimination er i fokus. Men hvad betyder intersektionalitet egentlig? Hvorfor er der så mange – og ind i mellem modsigende – forståelser i spil? Og hvorfor er det vigtigt at kende til i en dansk kontekst eller for socialrådgivere? Dette kapitel beskriver kort det felt og den forskningstradition begrebet har afsæt i, præsenterer en definition samt beskriver hvordan begrebet har relevans i forhold til ulighed, diskrimination såvel som en række andre danske hverdagskontekster, hvor det kan have en overset betydning. Vi udfolder med eksempler, nogle af de måder intersektionalitet er væsentlig og i spil, både i forhold til os selv som individer, men også i relation til, hvordan vi kan skærpe vores opmærksom på, hvordan intersektionalitet er i spil omkring os.<br/

    Optimized Diode-Bridge DC/DC Converter for HVDC Tapping: Analytical Modeling and Parameter Optimization

    HVDC tapping is a technology designed to transmit a controlled, small amount of power either unidirectionally or bidirectionally from an HVDC transmission line to a local power system. This serves the purposes of supporting, forming, or collecting renewable energy within the local power infrastructure. Despite its benefits, designing a DC/DC converter for HVDC tapping encounters significant challenges due to specific requirements. This paper introduces a cost-effective, easily controllable, and straightforward DC/DC converter utilizing a diode-bridge rectifier. The analytical model of the diode-bridge rectifier is established, and a parameter optimization method is proposed. Through this method, the characteristics of the proposed converter are thoroughly investigated. The findings of this study indicate that the output voltage drop characteristic of the diode-bridge is primarily influenced by the series inductor, while the voltage ripple is mainly determined by the output capacitor. Additionally, the droop characteristic may enhance the power balance of the DC distribution system in HVDC tapping. The proposed analytical model and parameter optimization method are validated through simulation and experimental results

    Clinical response and remission in patients treated with dupilumab for severe asthma:Results from the nationwide Danish Severe Asthma Register

    Background: Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that dupilumab reduces exacerbations and maintenance oral corticosteroids (mOCS) use in patients with uncontrolled and severe asthma. However, evidence in real-life settings is limited. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the proportion of patients achieving a clinical response and remission after treatment with dupilumab and identify predictors of response. Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study involving 203 severe asthma patients from the nationwide Danish Severe Asthma Register treated with dupilumab for 12 months. Clinical response to treatment was defined as a 50 % reduction in exacerbations and/or a 50 % reduction in mOCS dose. Clinical remission required meeting all the following criteria: complete cessation of exacerbations, no mOCS use, an Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ-6) score &lt;1.50 and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) &gt; 80 % of the predicted value. Predictors of treatment response were identified in a multivariate logistic regression model. Results: After 12 months of dupilumab treatment, 91 % of patients demonstrated a clinical response, and 30 % achieved clinical remission. All patients experienced fewer exacerbations, while patients with a clinical response and those achieving remission also exhibited significant improvements in mOCS dose reduction, FEV1 %, and ACQ-6 score. Predictors of remission included higher baseline fractional exhaled nitric oxide [OR = 3.82 (95 % CI: 0.90, 16.17)], lower body mass index [OR = 0.82 (95 % CI: 0.71, 0.93) for one unit increase], and the absence of allergic rhinitis [OR = 0.30 (95 % CI: 0.08, 1.11)]. Conclusion: In this real-life setting, involving over 200 patients treated with dupilumab for 12 months, 91 % had a clinical response, and 30 % of patients achieved clinical remission. These findings highlight dupilumab's potential in improving outcomes for severe asthma patients.</p
