    LIME: Liquid Metal Packaging for Power Semiconductors

    State-of-the-art power semiconductors use solid metal interconnects such as wire-bonding, soldering, and sintering. Thermo-mechanical stress degrades solid metal interconnects and is the main cause of failure in power semiconductors. This paper uses liquid metals, which are inherently resistant to thermo-mechanical stress, to replace solid metal interconnects. Preliminary results show that the use of liquid metals can increase the thermo-mechanical lifetime of power semiconductors by up to a factor of 40 to 60. Several iterations of liquid metal packages are shown, using both Silicon and Silicon Carbide chips

    Analysis and Design of a Dual-Coupled LCC-S Compensated IPT System Considering Air Gap Variation

    In inductive power transfer (IPT) systems, variations in the air gap can affect the self-inductance and mutual inductance of the loosely coupled transformer (LCT). As the resonant frequency is primarily determined by the self-inductance and the compensation capacitance, any variation in self-inductance can cause the resonant frequency to deviate from its designed value, resulting in reduced output gain and efficiency. To address this issue, a dual-coupled LCC-S compensated IPT system with a three-coil LCT is proposed. The key idea is to utilize the additional degree of freedom provided by the coupling between the compensation coil and the secondary coil to adjust the system's resonant frequency. By introducing a compensation coupling factor and determining its optimal value through a cost function, the frequency for zero phase angle (ZPA) input can be converged into a minimal range across the predetermined air gap range. Based on this, by selecting an appropriate operating frequency near the resonant frequency range, zero-voltage switching (ZVS) can be achieved, leading to a reduction in reactive current and switching loss. Subsequently, the parametric design process of the LCT with an optimal compensation coupling factor is elaborated. A 4.5-kW prototype was built and the experimental results have verified the theoretical analysis. The system operates at 85.5 kHz with a maximum input impedance angle of 12.2° across the air gap range of 40-120 mm, while the self-inductance varies by 17.5% and mutual inductance by 245%. The peak efficiency of the system is 95.2%.</p

    The Effect of Dietary Supplements on Male Infertility in Terms of Pregnancy, Live Birth, and Sperm Parameters:A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Background/Objectives: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of dietary supplements on male infertility. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and CENTRAL were searched from inception to May 2024. Randomized controlled trials with treatment durations of ≥12 weeks investigating the effect of dietary supplements on male infertility compared to placebo were included. Primary outcomes were pregnancy and live birth, while secondary outcomes were sperm concentration, sperm count, total motility, progressive motility, normal morphology, and DNA Fragmentation Index. Risk of bias was assessed using the revised Cochrane risk of bias (RoB2) tool. Data were meta-analyzed using random effects-restricted maximum likelihood models. Certainty of evidence was evaluated using the grading of recommendations, assessment, development and evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results: Of the 3137 articles identified, 50 were included. No effect on pregnancy and live birth was found. Different supplements improved single sperm parameters: Zinc and folic acid and ≥3 substance dietary supplements improved sperm concentration, selenium, carnitine, and coenzyme Q10 improved motility and alpha-lipoic acid improved normal morphology. Vitamin D, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids showed no improvement in sperm parameters. The majority of studies had some concerns or high risk of bias, and certainty of evidence was generally low or very low. Conclusions: This study found no convincing evidence of an effect of any dietary supplements on male infertility. Larger and more well-conducted randomized controlled trials focusing on specific supplements and considering pregnancy outcomes are needed.</p

    Taking Care:on the practices of social sustainability in Danish circular design - 'the Swan' as a case study

    Social sustainability is key for a successful green transition and circular design, focusing on justice and quality of life for all at both local and global scales. Despite its importance, social concerns are often underexamined in contemporary design practice and possibly even overshadowed by material concerns. This paper unfolds a theoretically informed discussion and analysis of a Danish case study to explore the complex context and practices of social sustainability in a circular design project, ‘the Swan’ kindergarten, and its’ design-related phases. We collected empirical data from online videos, interviews with key design related stakeholders, and social media showcasing local community involvement. Our theoretical framework highlights a ‘caring perspective’ that relies on situated knowledge and emphasizes understanding complex social phenomena within their broader contexts. Our approach foregrounds the entanglement of material and social concerns through three interrelated lenses of care: 1) material practice (what is done), 2) affective involvement (who it involves), and 3) ethical intentions (why it matters). Our findings reveal that, despite ethical intentions, material practices are often driven by environmental agendas and tectonic aesthetics, overshadowing social concerns like global justice and local affective involvement. With these preliminary insights, we aim to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a focus on social sustainability and advancing the debate on ‘the social’ in circular design.Social sustainability is key for a successful green transition and circular design, focusing on justice and quality of life for all at both local and global scales.
