Low-frequency radio recombination lines away from the inner galactic plane

Get PDF
Diffuse radio recombination lines (RRLs) in the Galaxy are possible foregrounds for redshifted 21 cm experiments. We use EDGES drift scans centered at −26°. 7 decl. to characterize diffuse RRLs across the southern sky. We find that RRLs averaged over the large antenna beam (72° × 110°) reach minimum amplitudes of R.A. = 2–6 hr. In this region, the Cα absorption amplitude is 33 ± 11 mK (1σ) averaged over 50–87 MHz (27 ≥ z ≥ 15 for the 21 cm line) and increases strongly as frequency decreases. Cβ and Hα lines are consistent with no detection with amplitudes of 13 ± 14 and 12 ± 10 mK (1σ), respectively. At 108–124.5 MHz (z ≈ 11) in the same region, we find no evidence for carbon or hydrogen lines at the noise level of 3.4 mK (1σ). Conservatively assuming that observed lines come broadly from the diffuse interstellar medium, as opposed to a few compact regions, these amplitudes provide upper limits on the intrinsic diffuse lines. The observations support expectations that Galactic RRLs can be neglected as significant foregrounds for a large region of sky until redshifted 21 cm experiments, particularly those targeting cosmic dawn, move beyond the detection phase. We fit models of the spectral dependence of the lines averaged over the large beam of EDGES, which may contain multiple line sources with possible line blending, and find that including degrees of freedom for expected smooth, frequency-dependent deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) is preferred over simple LTE assumptions for Cα and Hα lines. For Cα we estimate departure coefficients 0.79 < bnβn < 4.5 along the inner Galactic plane and 0 < bnβn < 2.3 away from the inner Galactic plane

Tourscape role in tourist destination sustainability: A path towards revisit

Get PDF
The tourscape concept is recently coined to represent the general atmosphere experienced by tourists in a destination and includes four dimensions (stimuli): physical, social, socially symbolic, and natural dimensions. Tourist perception of these stimuli is relevant for the development of a tourist destination. This study proposes for the first time that tourscape can also be an important element of the environmental sustainability of a tourist destination when it is in harmony with the environment, since tourscape can play a key role in the tourist experience by eliciting positive intentions and behaviors towards a destination. Based on the stimuli-organismresponse (SOR) model, this study analyzes how tourscape elements influence tourists’ revisit intention when they are perceived to be in harmony with the care of the environment through identification with the tourist destination and trust. The results of a sample of 872 tourists show that each dimension of the tourscape is positively related to destination identification. Furthermore, destination identification is directly related to revisit intention, and indirectly related to revisit intention through trust. This study highlights the implications for destination management organizations, with strategic suggestions on how to increase tourist perception regarding the sustainability of the destination and promote revisit intention

In the field of material science, the search for a material with an optimal bandgap of approximately 1.40 eV that can act as an efficient photocatalyst for water splitting using solar spectrum irradiation is a noble mission. In this article, we explore the structural, electronic structure, optical and photocatalytic properties of Zr2CO2/MoS2 vdW heterostructures. Our results demonstrates that the Zr2CO2/MoS2 vdW heterostructure can be reliably synthesized. This is due to a minimal lattice mismatch of less than 3%, a negative adhesion energy of -4.23 meV/Å 2, and inherent dynamic stability. The electronic band structure calculations indicate that the Zr2CO2/MoS2 vdW heterostructure is an indirect bandgap semiconductor. We found that the conduction band minimum (CBM) and valance band maximum (VBM) of the heterostructure are located in different monolayers. Furthermore, under −2 % biaxial strain a transition from type-I to type-II (staggered) band alignment occurred. Stacking 2D MoS2 on the Zr2CO2 monolayer results in a vdW heterostructure, and as a result, the HSE calculated bandgap of the Zr2CO2/MoS2 vdW heterostructure in most stable configuration lying in the ideal range for photocatalytic applications. We also studied the heterostructure’s optical properties to understand its response to incident photons with energies up to 14 eV. Based on our findings, Zr2CO2/MoS2 heterostructures are desirable for optoelectronic device applications operated in visible range. Our research offers fresh recommendations for developing novel, highly effective photocatalytic compounds with numerous optical device applications

Get PDF
The purpose of the study was to analyze the test–retest reliability of an isometric and isometric/vibratory muscular strength protocol in the bilateral seated bench press (BSBP), bilateral seated rowing (BSR), unilateral seated right knee extension (USKER), and left knee extension (USKEL) tests controlled using functional electromechanical dynamometry (FEMD) in healthy young adults. A repeated measures design was used to determine the reliability of a muscular strength protocol in isometric and isometric vibration modes with FEMD. No significant differences were found in test–retest analysis (p > 0.05; ES < 0.20); and high reliability (CV = 4.65–5.02%; ICC = 0.99–0.98) was found for BSBP measures, and acceptable reliability (CV = 3.71–9.61%; ICC = 0.98–0.95) was found for BSR, USKER, and USKEL. Furthermore, the coefficients between the two measures were strong (r = 0.963–0.839) and highly significant (p = 0.001) for maximal strength in the isometric and maximal isometric/vibratory assessment of muscle strength in all muscle strength tests. This study demonstrates that isometric and maximal isometric/vibratory strength in the BSBP, BSR, USKER, and USKEL tests can be measured with high reliability and reproducibility using the FEMD

Get PDF

Learning to assess foreign language listening: Analyzing the assessment items designed by Chilean pre-service EFL teachers and the cognitive load they experience in this process

Get PDF
The general objective of this study is to analyze the types of items designed by Chilean pre-service EFL teachers to assess listening comprehension skills in English and the cognitive load they experience during the test design process. This study employs a mixed-method design, including 125 Chilean pre-service teachers of English in their third, fourth, and fifth year of professional preparation. As data collection techniques, the participants created a listening comprehension test for secondary education English language learners. Moreover, they completed the Cognitive Load Scale (Leppink et al., 2013). The findings indicate that all pre-service EFL teachers create close and open-ended questions to evaluate students' listening comprehension, focusing on identifying specific information. Fourth and fifth-year pre-service teachers design close and open-ended questions to identify general and specific information, encompassing higher levels of comprehension. On the other hand, regarding the cognitive load experienced by the participants in the test design, they exhibited moderate intrinsic cognitive load, demonstrating that the task was reasonably challenging. The extraneous load was generally low, suggesting minimal external distractions. Notably, the germane load was high across all groups, indicating that the task effectively promoted learning and competency development. Pre-service language teacher education programs should consider these findings to enhance listening assessment practices. Incorporating cognitive load theory can assist teacher candidates in building both pedagogical and disciplinary teaching competencies
