Isolation and application to wastewater treatment of Pseudomonas sp. No. 44 possessing high formaldehyde tolerance

Text学術雑誌論文 / Journal ArticleBacteria and fungi that are resistant to formaldehyde (FA) are expected to use biochemical processing to degrade FA in wastewater. Pseudomonas sp. No. 44, which carries the FA dismutase and several FA dehydrogenase genes, was isolated from industrial wastewater as an FA-degrading strain that did not match the genome sequence of any previously reported FA-degrading bacteria. While maintaining a low cell density (OD600 = 0.1), almost all the FA (1 g L−1) was degraded within 6 h, after which cell proliferation predominated. Furthermore, increasing the cell density to OD600 = 1.0 maintained high FA resistance and rapid degradation performance within 3 h, even at concentrations as high as 5 g L−1. Formic acid, which temporarily increased in concentration as the FA decomposed, disappeared as the culture progressed, suggesting that this strain also exhibited high formate dehydrogenase activity. This practical performance exceeded that of any reported FA-degrading microorganism, including fungi. Vacuum-dried bacterial cells exhibited FA decomposition properties at the same level as those of live cells in the presence of phosphate due to the maintenance of enzymatic activity. The dried bacterial cells of strain No. 44, which are easy to handle and store, are expected to allow the maintenance of FA concentration in wastewater below the emission regulation concentration for each region through the addition of the strain at appropriate intervals.Copyright(C)2025 The Society for Biotechnology, Japan.journal articl

More evidence on the unergative-unaccusative distinction in second language grammars

    Get PDF
TextThis study presents new evidence for the structural unergative-unaccusative distinction, in second language (L2) grammars, focusing on elementary-level Japanese-speaking learners of English (JLEs). The underlying distinction of unergatives-unaccusatives is often obscured on the surface strings due to independent syntactic properties such as feature-driven subject movement (in English) or headedness (in Japanese). Nevertheless, based on previous findings, elementary-level JLEs are expected to have reset headedness but have not acquired subject movement. Then, the resulting representation would not involve the properties obscuring the underlying unergative-unaccusative distinction and potentially exhibit it on the surface strings in L2 English. Following these observations, we carefully designed test sentences with un/grammatical word orders that elementarylevel JLEs would generate and conducted an acceptability judgment task with native speakers of English and elementary-/intermediate-level JLEs. The results showed that, in contrast to native controls and intermediate learners, who exhibited target-like patterns, elementary-level JLEs incorrectly accepted ungrammatical word orders only with unaccusatives (e.g., *When did arrive the train?) but not those with unergatives (e.g., *Where did dance the man?). This discrepancy can be attributed to the sensitivity to the structural distinction of unergative-unaccusative verbs, and our data provide evidence for the creative construction of an interlanguage in L2 acquisition.Accepted: 11 Feb 2025, Version of Record published : 08 Apr 2025Copyright(C)2025 John Benjamins.journal articl

Childrenʼs Food, Wild Food, and Health in Southern Highland Tanzania: Comparison Within Iringa Region and Other Regions

Food intake and wild food access are important for childrenʼs health and achieving zero hunger in Africa, but evaluations of changing diets are mixed. This article consolidates questionnaires participated by 231 pupils in grades IV to VII (mean age 12.2 ± 1.5) in 3 schools in Iringa district, Iringa region, southern highlands of Tanzania, collected in Aug. and Sept. 2022. Food group, wild food intake frequency, and health problems were compared mainly between the 2 schools: one in an urbanized village, the other in a remote village. The pupils in relatively urbanized villages ate cereals, oil, and salt more frequently, whereas those in remote areas ate wild food more frequently. More health problems were frequently claimed in urbanized villages than in remote villages. Sustaining the environment and lifestyle for children to access wild food may be beneficial for childrenʼs health.departmental bulletin pape
