Roughness and smoothness evaluation of fabrics using images in the online shopping scenario
Text学術雑誌論文 / Journal ArticlePurpose - This study aims to identify the physical properties consumers consider important when evaluating fabric roughness and smoothness. Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of magnification ratios in hypothetical brick–and–mortar businesses and online shopping scenarios.
Design/methodology/approach - About 60 engineering students (30 men and 30 women) participated in two experiments. In the brick-and-mortar scenario, eight actual fabrics were evaluated for roughness and smoothness. In the online shopping scenario, images of each fabric photographed at nine different distances were evaluated. The relationship between fabric roughness and smoothness and the measured luminance properties of the images was analyzed to determine important physical properties influencing consumer perception.
Findings - The results reveal that maximum luminance and luminance contrast are critical factors in evaluating fabric roughness and smoothness from images. Additionally, the relationship between luminance contrast and spatial frequency properties indicates that repetitive patterns on fabric surfaces do not hinder the visual evaluation of texture. Visual–tactile evaluation using real fabrics has a higher optimal magnification than visual evaluation alone. This suggests that tactile evaluation enhances image presentation magnification requirements.
Originality/value - This study highlights that converting the correlation between the roughness and smoothness of real fabrics and their observed texture in surface images into observation or photographic distances enables accurate online evaluation. This approach could help consumers achieve texture assessments comparable to those in brick–and–mortar settings across various devices and visual environments.Copyright 2025 Emerald Publishing Limited. Ultrasound cholesteric liquid crystal color filter
Text学術雑誌論文 / Journal ArticleWe present an ultrasonically tunable color filter based on cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs), where ultrasound excitation dynamically modulates the helical pitch. Three CLC cells with different chiral dopant concentrations (4 wt%, 7 wt%, and 12 wt%) were investigated. The 12 wt% dopant cell exhibited the most significant spectral shift, with the transmission peak shifting from 511 nm to 451 nm, under ultrasound actuation, achieving a 60-nm tunable range. Chromaticity analysis confirms a reversible color transition, demonstrating the effectiveness of ultrasound in dynamically tuning optical properties.© 2025 Optica Publishing Group. Analysis of the pathways of foreign students after graduation from junior high school in Tochigi Prefecture: Results of the 15th annual survey
text紀要論文 / Departmental Bulletin PaperThis paper analyses the results of the 15th annual survey on the pathways of foreign students who graduated from junior high schools in Tochigi Prefecture this year. The survey collected answers on 200 students with non-Japanese backgrounds. Of these, 181 (90.5%) went on to high schools or other educational institutions. A questionnaire for managers was also conducted, in which the issues raised regarding the career guidance of foreign students were typified and interpreted. Two new findings from this study are as follows. First, the special measures for admission selection for students who have been in Japan for less than three years has shown limited effectiveness in practice, particularly in terms of expanding their educational opportunities. Second, one in eight students (27 out of 200, or 13.5%) advanced to public high schools outside Tochigi Prefecture. This suggests that public high schools within Tochigi are lagging behind in delivering special admission measures and specialized educational programs for students with foreign backgrounds. This study, by shedding light on high school advancement patterns, has highlighted challenges in educating students with foreign backgrounds, specifically within the context of this region.
