SOUTH CAROLINA GIRL 
MAKES GOOD ON 
BROADWAY

A former Columbia girl is making 
good in Gotham. And a busy little 
blossom she is, too, what with a ris 
ing demand for her talents as a photo 
graphic niodel and her regular ap- 
pearnces as a singer in some of the 
big town's smartest supper clubs. 
Currently appearing in the Dog-woo*.1 
Room of the Blackstone Hotel, Mary; 
HilTs throaty mezzo-soprano contfrT 
ues to draw raves from the local 
swells and visiting fireman, as well 
as ' big butter and egg men' from tht 
"provinces", i. e., any territory or 
locality outside the New York City 
limits.
Mary is doubly blest. The come 
hither of this young starlet is no- 
confined to her beautiful wide rang' 
voice alone; there is also a surpris 
ing amount of fetch in her good 
looks. A blond with blight blue eyes 
and a smooth fair complexion, Mary': 
smile is positively dazzling when she 
draws back her cupid's-bow lips an i 
«'Xpost's her gorgeous pearly tei'th.
Mary claims she can't add two and 
two but that doesn't matter her 
figure stacks up perfectly.. For in 
stance, get a load of this: weight 12" 
pounds, bust 36, waist 26, hips 38, 
height 5 feet 6 inches. She was bom 
December 24, and off-hand we'd say 
that the ft How lucky enough to winn 
this lovely career girl for hip bride 
will be receiving a very nice Christ 
mas package.
It all began in Timmonsville, S. C. 
where our heroine attended elemen 
tary school and took her first piano 
les?ons from Mrs. George Drauphn. 
Later at Columbia High School, Col 
umbia, S. C. she was an outstanding 
member of the glee club and sang 
leading role? in operettas and other 
musicals After high school days, 
Mary sang in Little Theatre product 
ions in Columbia and studied voice 
under Mr. E. T. Gavin of the Major 
Conservatory of Music. Thence to 
Florence, S. C., where she studied 
with the late music educator, Mr. Ar 
thur Manchester.
In New York. Mary studied with

Paul Meyer, Amando Agnini of the 
San Francisco Opera and Uiro Yann- 
opoulos, stage director of the Metro 
politan Opeia Company. She studied 
bullet with Boris Novikoff and danc 
ing with Albert Butler. All the while 
she studied Dramatics with various 
coaches and worked in opera group 
<:ich as the Amato Opera School and 
the Master Institute of Op*ra.
Mary has touted the United States 
twice once with the Rodgers-Hum- 
merstein musical play, and once with 
the Irving Berlin success "Miss Lib 
erty," in which Eddy Albert was 
starred. Both shows were Broadway 
productions. The plucky South Caro- 
la go-getter once appeared at Lew- 
ifohn Stadium with Gladys Swarth- 
out and Robert Weede. Mary has met 
several band leaders including Xavier 
Cugat. She has worked in theatres 
with Vlnvent Lopez and the Three 
Suns.
Although Mary has lost her South- 
nrn nr*rpnt, shf P«>", "T don't talk
like a New Yorker, don't care for 
most of New York accents the ex 
treme ones". For recreation she bi 
cycles in Central Park and window- 
Bliops Fifth Avenue, Her favorite eat 
eries are Nine's on E. 52nd street., 
Lindy's and the Dogwood Room which 
features Southern cooking.
Mary likes to take things slow and 
easy. Says she, "After living in this 
mad town seven years I still know 
how to relax." She visits the Palmet 
to State every chance she gets. Inci 
dentally Mary's sister Frances Hill 
Lynch is the very competent teacher 
of Elementary Vocal Music in the City 
schools of Sumter, S. C. Frances is 
also President of the South Carolina 
Music Educators Association.
If, when in New York, you decide 
to attend church, make it the Cen 
tral Presbyterian Church on Park 
Avenue. What talented South Caro 
lina lass will be singing in the choir 
there? You guessed it exactly Mary 
Hill.

WINNSBORO, July 4 (Special)- 
|Two piano compositions by a 
Winnsboro piano educator ha ve 
jjust been released.
George Tracy, Winnsboro niusi- 
Ician, has received copies of "Torn 
Tom Parade," published by J. 
Fischer and Bro., and "Chinese 
Boy," published by Boston Music 
Co. J, Fischer has purchased 
another composition for a collec 
tion, and Boston Music Co., is 
slated to release another composi 
tion this fall. "Tom Tom Parade" 
has been included in the 1959 list* 
of material selectedy by Berni<f 
[Frost, well known authority in the 
, field of piano instruction.
For his master's thesis at Cor 
[nell College, Mr. Tracy wrote m: 
original "Sonata for Organ" which '• 
was given a public performance; 
I at the school.
Among his well known teachers 
[are Miss Margarette Richards of
[Columbia College where he hns 
(done special work.
Mrs. Tracy, the former Lilia 
JBoyd Ketchin, is the daughter ot 
late Sen. Thomas H. Ketchin 
land Mary Elizabeth Shaw Ketchm 
[of Winnsboro. She is an educator 
[with special training in the field 
[of Elementary Education.
