CEMETERY NEAR FORT MILL,
AS RESTORATION COMPLETED

storation of Old Unity cemetery, 
which lies about half a ml'e frou> 
Fort Mill and was established 
concurrently with Unity Presby 
terian church in 1788, has at 
tracted many visitors to the spot 
from the community and other 
places in this section, whose in 
terest has been either that of curi- 
,osity to see this venerable place, 
lor family connection with those 
(who have been buried horc be- 
twecn the years 1790 and 1870. 
[The work of restoration was u»-
lertak^n by G»or?e Fish, rj 
(manager of the Fort Mill Manu- 
jfacturinir company, whose inler- 
it iit most commendable and of 
definite a character OK to be 
[most personal, although he rns 
[been a citizen here for only 10 
| years and an Englishman by 
Ibirth. He succeeded in interesting
plain upright slabs of marble or 
elate with the exception of one 
which lies flat upon its brick 
foundation and marks the grave i 
of Richard Springs. Visitors have] 
been delightfully entertained by; 
reading the inscriptions on these 
stones, and amused at some of th« 
errors and the stonecutter's ef 
forts at decoration which in some 
instances are somewhat crude. A* I 
a general thing, the inscription* | 
are clearly cut and easy to read. 
On one stone the artisan who pre- 
pared it had evident transposed I 
figures in the date hhown as the! 
year of death, as it is recorded, 
that Robert Robb died in the year 
1084, probably intended for 180-1. 
On other stones letters in certain 
words are left out, the Old Eng 
lish "f" used for 
abbreviated with an apostrophe, 
apparently ub HU expedient I" |»r»-
"a/* or words
[Col. Leroy Springs, of Lancaster, 
who has buried here the remains jTvido sufficient room for the full 
lof a number closely related to hisj sentence on a line; thus, in one 
lown family, who authorized the j case the word "dread"' is

The cemetery embraces a tract 
lof land of about one* and one-half 
[acres, and is situated in the midst,

ment than others in the commun

tions have been overcome with the 
exception of the road, and -Mr. 
Fish has a plan to connect the 
old with the new cemetery with a 
new road which v.ill provide easy 
access for the many more who 
will come to enjoy the walk or 
drive through the woods.
There are many graves marked 
within the encloburc with tho 
names of families prominent then 
and now in the community and 
i elsewhere. Those which appear 
most frequently are Elliott, 
White, Springs, Harris, McKce,

Mr. McKenzie feels sure that he

stones of old Unity church, am! 
it is the purpose of the officers of 
this church to erect a murker on 
the spot, made of native granite. 
to be unveiled on the occasion of 
home coming day next September.
